Poppies are a symbol for remembrance. We remember those who have given their lives on behalf of others, especially in conflict. These were in the parish church at Burnsall, in the Yorkshire Dales. My wife’s family has a connection with the church and we were visiting in remembrance of her grandfather who had been Church Warden there at the end of WWII. The church was very peaceful and this scene caught my eye. If you are ever in the area it is well worth a visit as it has a small museum nside with artefacts found locally showing the early life of the first settlers in the area, going back to pre-historic times and also covering the early Christian history. St. Wilfrid preached on the banks of the Wharfe over 1300 years ago and a wooden church was soon established on the site of the present building. Worship has continued to this day and St. Wilfrid’s is now a thriving church which has regular Sunday worship based manly on the traditional service and also family worship. The church houses a very important collection of ancient stones. Thanks to a lot of hard work and funding from various bodies, these stones are now part of a fantastic display “Vikings in Burnsall”. This display can be visited at any time during the day. Amongst the stones are various crosses and hog backed tombs. There are guides (in different languages) and an audio guide will be available from May 10th 2005. Also of interest is the 15th Century alabaster panel which is on display in the Lady Chapel. It depicts the Adoration of the Magi and is of great historical value and interest. Built: 700 / Architect: St Wilfrid (?)

Place visited nearly in an astral projection. / Somewhere, perfectly – a land where you don’t have to walk (there’s silence and an air of solitude), but only slide. (Melzi D’Eril Manor, Bellagio, Como lake, Italy)

Travelling in the past – toward the past. / A melancholy made of salt and sand – a seaport (Savona, Italy). A naval vessel should arrive, if you wait.

Sometimes you have to run… / I don’t know the exact reason he had decided to flee “us”again, but I knew this time was the last… / What made it different? / The feeling of emptiness in my heart… / the hole left with a gaping mouth in the pit of my soul… / Perhaps it was his fear of losing control… / Having a controlling mother will do that to a man… / Know a man’s relationship with his mother, and you will find his relationship / with you… / The hate or love for his mother… / Will equate love and hate for you… / If you are like his mother, / He will resent you. / If you are opposite of her, / He will fear loving you. / A total contradiction, but true nevertheless… / I don’t know how he found me… / I don’t know why he sought me… / I will never understand why he left me… / Granted, / he left me before all this hell even started…

Grandfather’s eyes / were warm and tender / cornflower blue irises / glimmering life’s reflection / like the soft rolling waves of our homeland / Grandfather’s eyes / were filled with mischief / small laugh lines etched by each corner / my quiet yet solid rock / on which to lean / to block the noise of this world / protecting me as much as a man / as he did when I was a child / championing me / those eyes believing in me / even when I couldn’t summon the strength / to believe in myself / Grandfather’s lips / didn’t utter words of love / sappy sonnets of how he felt / to those he cherished most / Yet in those eyes / the words shone with vivid certainty / unabashed clarity / of his true heart / Grandfather’s eyes, sadly now / have closed / and yet they shine still / winking at me with rich laughter / in early morning’s mirror / taking peaceful residence in my heart / for he lives within me.

Astral Projection
by arctoaA tale of premature / births and phenomena: / of brick-red light / in the flurrying night (...)
Written in the spring of this year, and is largely biographical. Which is rare enough for my own writing, I usually characterise. Still, this is something a little new for me so it’s submitted as-is: without revision or prior critique.

Very still pose, maybe the wind has blown hair across the face, or she has just turned to the right .. so the idea is a moment of stillness, and perhaps she is just about to get up or say something… and hopefully she is just balanced between being a student and being self-sufficient? I construct these pieces, so they are synthetic in the sense that I just conjure them out of my faltering memory, rather than draw from life.. [ this relies on having drawn from life a lot previously ].. when things go well, really, this person will assert themselves, their identity into the picture… media : graphite pencil on acid free paper

In a future society, every three days everyone but a band of police called the Faction and Government officials are stripped of their memories to prevent revolution against the government’s biggest mistake.
