Geisha in watercolor. It was very difficult painting the fan without messing up the sleeve and the details on the silk part of the fan. But, the challenge was sooo worth it.

Another part of the magnificent coastal scenery of Esperance in the far south east of Western Australia. Located on the edge of the mighty Southern Ocean in the Recherche Archipelago, Esperance is the principal holiday town for the Goldfields and also for those residents of Perth who don’t mind the 750 kms drive. These days, however, more and more people fly down (an hour and a half) and rent a car on arrival. / Many world travellers who include Esperance on their itinerary say without hesitation that the beaches here are by far the best they have seen anywhere and who am I to argue with that! / This photo was taken from the car park at Observatory Point, about 8 kms out of town, and we are looking west along the seemingly endless line of beaches that stretches into infinity. How on earth this beach came by it’s name I honestly don’t know. Perhaps it CAN get rough. Perhaps it WAS rough the day it was discovered and named! Being on the Southern Ocean and exposed to the strong swells that roll in from the Antarctic that is a likely scenario but we have been here 3 or 4 times and on each occasion “Peaceful Bay” would have been a far more appropriate name! The location is on the shores of Cape Le Grande National Park some 50 kms east of Esperance in the far south east of Western Australia, some 750 kms by road from Perth. I have to say that being here is nothing short of idyllic! Peter
Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Recherche Bay As Is – Straight from the Camera We had our lunch at this beautiful little spot at Recherche Bay near Cockle Creek. Southwest National Park, Tasmania, Australia – Southern Ocean. Recherche Bay is located on the extreme south-eastern corner of Tasmania, Australia and was a landing place of the d’Entrecasteaux expedition to find missing explorer La Perouse. It is named after one of the expedition’s ships. In 2003, the private landowners of the D’Entrentrecasteaux expedition site sought permission to selectively log the area resulting in a large-scale campaign to protect the site from destruction. A section of its south-eastern foreshore is part of the Southwest National Park, but until recently a densely wooded peninsula in the north-east of the bay was threatened with logging that would have changed the character of the area profoundly. This 143-hectare (353-acre) area, which includes remnants of an 18th century French garden established by members of Bruni D’Entrecasteaux’s 1792 expedition, has now been protected, with the assistance of a generous donation and loan from Dick and Pip Smith. It is managed by the not-for-profit Tasmanian Land Conservancy. Canon PowerShot A650 IS Shutter Speed: 1/1250sec / Aperture: F4.0 / ISO: 80
The name means that it is 9 miles west from the town of Esperance. There are also 10 mile and 11 mile beaches!! LOL There is a real bay of islands out there which are a haven for marine animals such as seals. The Southern Ocean really is this colour – no touching up whatsoever has been done on this photo, other than straightening the horizon slightly. Esperance is the favoured holiday destination for the West Australian goldfields, being a mere easy 3 hour drive from Kalgoorlie.
From the roadside car parking area we look down on West Bay and out across the Southern Ocean and the Recherche Archipelago. Hard to believe we are just a couple of minutes drive from the busy town centre. Esperance is about 750 kms south of Perth, Western Australia and slightly less than 350 kms south of Kalgoorlie and the goldfields, for which it serves as the number one holiday destination. / Taken with Sony Alpha 350 / 18-70 Sony kit lens with x4 neutral density filter
This is the zoomed view west from Observatory beach lookout a few k’s west of Esperance, Western Australia. We are looking at Nine Mile and Ten mile beaches and the road we are on is a most delightful scenic drive that is a must for every visitor to this town. The beaches of Esperance, which are all part of the Recherche Archipelago, have often been referred to by global travellers as the finest in the world and I am not about to dispute that. / Despite the fact that it is over 700 kms from Perth, we have visited the area several times, either back in the days when we were working or else during the rather more recent years of our retirement. / Photo taken with my Sony Alpha 350 dslr using a 55-200 lens with neutral densityfilter and tripod mounted.
The scene from above West Beach at Esperance, some 700 kms south east of Perth, Western Australia. The pleasure boat cruises the islands on both a daily and half day basis and takes trippers and holiday makers to out of shot Woody Island. En route it pulls in close to many of the bay’s islands for a close and personal look at the many sea lion colonies as well as sea eagles, penguins etc. We did a half day cruise a couple of years ago and it was pure magic.
One of the many beaches of Esperance, way down in the far south east of Western Australia some 700+ kms from Perth. Esperance is on the Recherche Archipelago (a part of the Southern Ocean) and just off shore are several small islands inhabited by seals. Twilight Cove is linked to Esperance and several of the other beaches by an excellent dual use footpath/cycleway which stretches for several kms.
Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Pacific Gulls (Larus pacificus) Recherche Bay, Cockle Creek, Tasmania, Australia. The Pacific Gull is a very large black-backed gull with a massive yellow bill, broadly tipped with scarlet. The upper wings and wingtips are wholly black with a narrow white inner trailing edge, the tail is white with a broad black band near the end. The legs are yellow to orange-yellow. Juvenile Pacific Gulls are mottled dark brown with pale face and the bill is pink with a black tip. The immatures have dark brown wings, whitish mottled body and a black-tipped yellow bill. There are two forms of the Pacific Gull: the eastern form (race pacificus) has a white eye and a complete red tip to the bill while the western form (race gergii) has a red eye and an incomplete red tip to the bill. Over 700 kms from Perth, down in the far south of Western Australia and on the Recherche Archipelago section of the mighty Southern Ocean sits the town of Esperance, which boasts some of the world’s finest – and certainly whitest – beaches. Twilight Cove, seen here from the scenic drive, is one such beach and many celebrities have swum from here – none more so than Prince Charles whilst on a visit some 35+ years ago. His endearing comment that charmed the locals was that it was an absolutely beautiful beach but the water was b…......cold!
Taken from Observatory Point. near Esperance, some 700 kms south east of Perth in Western Australia. It is all a part of the Recherche Archipelago. The foreground beach is Observatory Beach. Esperance is reputed as having several of the world’s finest beaches and is an absolute must for visitors to our state.
On the Recherche Archipelago and just a couple of minutes drive from the Esperance town centre. From our room in the B&B where we stayed we had an unbroken view across this bay
Esperance, some 750 kms south east of Perth, Western Australia, boasts some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. This was the final day of our holiday down there and we just HAD to take an early pre breakfast walk along the coastal path for a last look at this stunning scenery. This is a dual use path for cyclists and walkers and it stretches for several kms along this glorious coastline. The beach is Blue Haven and the time was 6.30 am.
Arguably the most popular of all Esperance’s beaches, Twilight Cove is about 3 kms from the town centre and has a large car/coach parking area overlooking the Southern Ocean. Many, many years ago Prince Charles visited the area and couldn’t resist an early morning swim at this very spot. He was asked how he liked it and replied, as you might imagine, that it was a beautiful place but the water was “bloody cold!”
We pulled in to a gravel off road parking place and I took this shot by simply leaning out of the car window. The place is Esperance, still and we are looking across to one of the many uninhabited islands that make up the Recherche Archipelago.
Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Sculpture of a Southern Right Whale Recherche Bay, Cockle Creek (the most Southern town in Australia), Tasmania, Australia. The life-size, three month old Southern Right Whale sculpture by Stephen Walker is a poignant reminder that whale calves once frolicked in Recherche Bay. Whalers harpooned calves first as their distress calls kept adults close. Please visit the Sea_Shepherd’s_Website for an insight into their campaign on saving Whales. Inscribed on a plaque beside this sculpture are these words: Celebration of the Southern Right Whale Conception, birth and nurture, far beyond our human scale. / This three month old calf begins a Southern Ocean journey to feed, to play, to live. This yearly cycle began five million years ago. / This rhythm of leviathans we witness now as these tender tactile animals return to our waters every year. Sculptor, Stephen Walker, December 1995. This was taken last spring in the Cape le Grande National Park, some 55 kms east of Esperance on Western Australia’s Southern Ocean coast and around 750 kms south east of Perth. / The colour everywhere was just unbelievable, as it almost always is during our springtime and there would have been perhaps 25 different species of wildflowers growing in this section of bush. I should add that we are on the side of Frenchman’s Peak which is a prominent landmark for many miles around. / Camera Sony Alpha 350 with 18-70 lens / x4 neutral density filter / Aperture f8 / Hand held
