  • Eilean Donan Castle, winter 2007

  • Romance depicting heroic or marvelous deeds, pageantry, romantic exploits etc Eilean Donan castle bathing in the early afternoon light _As one of the most iconic images of Scotland, Eilean Donan is recognised all around the world. Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet, and surrounded by some majestic scenery, it is little wonder that the castle is now one of the most important attractions in the Scottish highlands. Although first inhabited around the 6th century, the first fortified castle was built in the mid 13th century and stood guard over the lands of Kintail. Since then, at least four different versions of the castle have been built and re-built as the feudal history of Scotland unfolded through the centuries. Partially destroyed in a Jacobite uprising in 1719, Eilean Donan lay in ruins for the best part of 200 years until Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911 and proceeded to restore the castle to its former glory. After 20 years of toil and labour the castle was re-opened in 1932_ / http://www.eileandonancastle.com/

  • The Snowy Owl – The Snowy Owl is a large, diurnal white Owl that has a rounded head, yellow eyes and black bill. The feet are heavily feathered. A distinctive white Owl, their overall plumage is variably barred or speckled with thin, black, horizontal bars or spots. Females and juveniles are more heavily marked than males – adult males may be almost pure white, although they have up to three tail bands. Adult females are distinctly barred throughout, and have from four to six tail bands. Immatures are very heavily barred throughout, and dark spotting may codominate or dominate the overall plumage. Snowy Owl calls are varied, but the alarm call is a barking, almost quacking krek-krek-krek-krek; the female also has a softer mewling pyee-pyee-pyee-pyee or “prek-prek-prek”... So unlike the one they use in the Harry Potter films, this Hedwig is actually female. They use male birds to portray her in the film because a bird with an all white plumage looks more impressive they think! bit of unless knowledge for you eh?

  • The Butchart Gardens in Brentwood Bay on Vancouver Island, Canada, is one of the world’s premier floral show gardens. Jennie Butchart began to shape this magnificent landscape in 1904. She established, in the style of the grand estates of the period, several distinct gardens to evoke a range of aesthetic experiences. An abandoned limestone quarry was transformed into the dramatic Sunken Garden. More from Butchart Gardens:

  • Rebecca is out for a walk in the woods with her orange bunny, Ted. It’s the first day of spring – she’s enjoying the warm breezy weather and has decorated her hair with some lovely blossoms. What a nice life! This piece was originally illustrated in pencil and gouache on gorgeous flecked recycled cardboard.

  • From a recent travel to Bhutan. This grandfather came from his village with his granddaughter on his back to attend a ceremony in the local buddhist temple. Bhutan is an interesting place where the traditional and modern worlds collide. This child looked at the camera suspiciously, as if to say what is out there in the world. The grandfather had a big smile as if to say, I am content.

  • Up at 5am to chance a morning shoot in good light revealed more than we could have hoped for. / Just as Murph & I had convinced ourselves that the sunrise wasn’t going to do much, we realised that we had better look for a foreground to look east instead of pointing the cameras at the sea. / Headed to Rebecca Lagoon on Tasmania’s west coast near Temma to get a double whammy of it by including the reflection and weren’t disappointed at all. / Big sky, magic water, foreshore reeds. / Does it get any better than this? / Straight from the camera this one. / How surreal is this. Magic morning indeed. / Trips to “the shack” are yielding excellent results so far. Must be the frame of mind and karma. / And it got better as we ventured further on foot for the next 4 hours or so.
