This is my homework for the course I am currently doing at Brunswick Street Gallery. We have to take a self portrait which does not show our face but which does show something of ourselves. This may not be the one I submit, but it has been an interesting exercize and I thought I would share. I often post work here without much of an explanation into the choices I make. I thought it might be nice to make it available so you can see that I do actually put a bit of thought into my work, even if it is not obvious at first glance. The Easels: / Faded and old. They represent myself as an artist. How of late I am taking fewer and fewer photos and am out of practice. They are scattered at random, which is a lot like my very hectic and chaotic life. Yet they all match, which shows my underlying need to have organisation, even if it is organised chaos. You may notice the empty frame. For me this represents not only my occupation, but it’s emptiness means it acts as a window. A way to see into me. It is a comment on the whole image as well as an element within it. The Doll: / This is a childhood doll and has my old name written on it (from before I became Jo O’Brien). So it connects to my past and reminds me of a time passed. She is naked, which reflects how I feel as an artist, always confessing through my art. She is torn at both arms from being pulled in a tug-of-war game. Much like how I feel when I have more things requiring my time than I have time for. On a more human level. She represents my desire to one day have children, my “femaleness”, my nurturing side. The Costume: / It was scavenged from an op shop. Something I absolutely adore doing. And it fits like a second skin, showing my comfort in front of the camera. It’s close colour match to my skin implies nudity which highlights a more general level of comfort with my body, and ability to play a role within my own skin. It’s second hand nature reminds me that a ‘creative artist life’ was never my first choice. In fact, I studied Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Maths Methods in VCE and always had an aptitude for the sciences. Art was an accident. The Location: / At home in the back yard. Here I feel most relaxed and comfortable. It has been the location of numerous photo shoots and self portraits, so much so that I would feel like I was abondoning this space to take self portraits elsewhere. It also represents for me, my ability to live off my creativity, as my best selling shot was taken here. More generally I enjoy the idea of fences, of what they hold in and out. And of how to break them down. This is a theme I like to play with in a lot of my work- the emotional and psychological barriers we put up around ourselves, often needlessly. Setting up the shot: / I wanted to appear within the forest of easels and yet comfortable which dictated my pose, leaning gently against the fence. This shows my acceptance of the situation and environment and willingness to participate within it. However I am still holding my doll and not interacting with any other part of the environment. This suggests I still cling to something from my childhood, and have insecurites about the art world and my credibility as an artist. Your thoughts?

Because if we can yell in anger or malice, we must still have the voice apologize. If we have no one to learn new lessons from, we can always hear ourselves reteach the old ones. When care is at a premium, we can tap the source and give it abound for charity. Even if we have no arms, no legs, and no way to get around, we can still be moved by art, literature, or music. If we burn our fingers and feel pain, we get the pleasure of watching ourselves heal and of feeling better again. If we never do anything great in this world, there are fifty people who would completely disagree.

I have just been looking through my photos..and thought ‘what are they for?’ / Most of them I could happily delete, and probably will…though I’ll sleep on it. I have recently had the pleasure of learning a lot from a fellow RBubbler (you know who you are :) ) ...but it seems the more I learn, the more I want …with the result that so much of what I’ve done is redundant now. Also asking myself… who am I doing this for? For others pleasure, for my pleasure? / Well, if it is for others, then I should be looking down the commercial route… photographing things that will sell. / If it is for my own pleasure..well…ok, but I’d much rather share that pleasure than walk the streets and beaches taking picures alone for the reason that they are ‘nice’ / Does anyone know the answer …and maybe share with me? ‘Cause I’ll be damned if I know!

The raison d’etre of The Digital Interface group is to share technique in order to encourage experimentation and learning as an art community. It is not so much a showcase as a show-how-case – the emphasis being on describing how you achieve a result rather than just presenting that result. Now many people don’t want to share their techniques – and that is quite understandable. Art is deeply personal and often it’s not just the fact that they don’t want to give away their creation magic but also because the creation process is almost part of them. But the point of this group is to do just that – to share creation magic. I’d encourage people to select perhaps even just a single image, so that others can understand how it came to be, and thus be inspired to experiment and tinker themselves. It doesn’t have to be your best work or the one that involves your most enlightened processes – just something that you are proud of which required some extra processing to achieve. Then include a good description of that processing – what filters you used, what layering techniques, how you manipulated the image, whether you applies specific brush types, various techniques in rendering software etc. Let the novice get to grips with the work of the expert. If you don’t want to share that then that’s ok, but submitting work to The Digital Interface is not for you. I think many people go away hurt – despite our attempts to explain the group and it’s aims – which is a shame because it’s actually about working together as an art community rather than any elitist thing. It’s never about your art, it’s about how you created it. It’s also not about proving ownership or genius. It’s just about sharing our experiences, techniques and knowledge in order to grow together. When you see a piece of art in this group, you can look at the description and get a basic understanding of how it was achieved. You can go away and play with your own images. From this shall arise not copies but new techniques, new advances, new art.

I am back after a week in LA and the Bay area (San Francisco and surrounds). I had many adventures and met lots of interesting people – many of whom may be able to help RedBubble. Left Xavier at the Web 2.0 conference talking about stuff … And on the flight home read an interesting article about Einstein and his attitude to God. In essence (and I hope I don’t insult with my summary), Einstein came to believe that the very order and rationality of the universe pointed to something transcendent. This is a view I deeply share. Einstein also felt that when we lose our sense of wonder and awe at the creation we are no longer truly seeing it. Again I share this. As that strange, dark plane flew across the Pacific and as I read about one of the greatest thinkers of all time, it also dawned upon me that the fact the universe is rational, and we can also be, is a situation of great emotional moment. And indeed its significance can only be grasped in quiet contemplation when reason and thought have faded into the background. Some may say I take a step too far in suggesting this, but I also know the same people look at the same night sky mesmerized by its immensity and cowed by the purpose of its creation.

Obituary of the late Mr. “Common Sense” Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, “Common Sense”, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: Knowing when to come in out of the rain; Why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn’t always fair; and Maybe it was my fault. “Common Sense” lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6 -year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. “Common Sense” lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer Panadol, sun lotion or a band-aid to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. “Common Sense” lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. “Common Sense” took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. “Common Sense” finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. “Common Sense” was preceded in death by his parents, “Truth” and “Trust”; his wife, “Discretion”; his daughter, “Responsibility”; and his son, “Reason”. He is survived by his 3 stepbrothers; “I Know My Rights”, “Someone Else Is To Blame”, and “I’m A Victim”. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

I am often asked about my style of photography and how I came about it. It is not so much something that I discovered but rather it discovered me. You will notice that a lot of my work is quite minimalistic and simple in its composition. Around every corner in life, there are new decisions to be made, new sights to explore and new smells to inhale. It can be quite intimidating and overwhelming and at times, it prevents me from being able to concentrate. Very quickly I can find myself lost and unable to remember how to get to where I wanted to go or even how to return to where I started. A couple of years ago I discovered that through photography, I can finally make sense of all this chaos. By stripping down my surroundings to their basic form and concentrating on one thing at a time, I am forced to relax, to slow down and to enjoy the simplicity of life. Not only does this help ‘in the now’, but I can easily recall these images at anytime if I find myself once again overwhelmed by my surroundings. So as you see, photography is more than just a pastime or hobby for me, it is also a necessity for my survival. I need to take these images. Note: This piece was originally written for the Fine Art of Photography Group a number of months ago but I have decided to share it with a larger audience.

Today is the 4th anniversary of the start of my black time – the 556 days when I did not see my children [when my ex refused my children to see me and threatened me with the destruction of my life and with pure physical violence, to stay clear of them] During this huge horrible black time, I wanted to die, but then I heard something and I wanted to live again with a force that renewed me. / I wanted to feel something I wanted to survive to see my kids again. / I knew I had to change I had to get better, get stronger, gather resources to fight the battle of my maternity and my children’s lives! ~ this song came on the radio: “The Reason” – Hoobastank [2005] I’m not a perfect person / There’s many things I wish I didn’t do / But I continue learning / I never wished I’d done those things to you / And so before I go / I just want you to know I found a reason for me / To change who I used to be / A reason to start over new / And the reason is you I’m sorry that I hurt you / It’s something I must live with every day / And all the pain I put you through / I wish that I could take it away / And be the one who catches all your tears / That’s why I need you to hear I found a reason for me / To change who I used to be / A reason to start over new / And the reason is you / And the reason is you / And the reason is you / And the reason is you I’m not a perfect person / I never meant to do those things to you / And so I have to say before I go / That I just want you to know I found a reason for me / To change who I used to be / A reason to start over new / And the reason is you I found a reason to show / A side of me you didn’t know / A reason for all that I do / And the reason is you After I dried my eyes, I found photos of my kids I stuck them all together and pasted that on top of my PC screen and began the fight! I survived and although my children still have not left their father’s home to live with me I see them and they are the only ones I have to account myself to for my role in that trauma they have had to live through …... and they forgive me! Now I am still reminded by this song playing on the radio [Vega 91.5 – for Melbournians] that I am not perfect and I still must accomplish my dreams to show my children my value of their love & support! Perhaps if we stop trying to impress our parents and start trying to impress our children we will treat them as valued people we love and not fringe benefits to a relationship, or assets! We may also then adopt the healthier attitude of looking after the planet for our children to see instead of using it up! Thank you for reading my words. / Keep Happy! ♥

  • Four Reasons to Have Groups on Redbubble

Read my forum article outlining four good reasons to have Groups on Redbubble Unless you host a RB Group, you won’t be able to see the link above. Therefore, here is the response I wrote: I’m sure it’s been said already, but I can see four good reasons to have groups : (1). They allow people from the same town, city, or state to interact and to meet both inside and outside Redbubble. How many other groups have lead to meetups like Adelaide/SA has? (Probably heaps, I’m just unaware of them!) (2). It’s the surest method to see more art from another genre, country, or medium. When was the last time you saw Latin-Caribbean Art ? (3). They are the simplest form of categorising. Instead of the staff at RB having to categorise every piece of work according to genre, country, medium, etc … we, the forum members, do this for them. As humans, it’s in our nature to put ourselves into the category that matches our skills, wants and desires. / I’m sure this fact puts a big smile on the faces of a few techies at the RB office! (4). The most important reason for groups: Those of us with a passion to learn use the Groups to see the work of better artists, quicker and easier. When a hundred Wedding or Portrait Photographers display their work in one group, we all get to see the results in one neat package. Heck, I can’t think of ANY better reason for groups than those four.

Hi to all you RB’ers who were kind enough to bother reading this. I thought it was about time to come and introduce myself to the community in the hope of making a few friends and getting some constructive criticism about my portfolio pieces. I have been taking photos for over a year now. Initially as a way to record those special things you don’t want to forget. I found that I ended up with some cracking photos….which in my opinion wouldn’t look out of place in a frame on someones wall. This was the point of no return. I wondered if I had uncovered potential in myself. Since then I have progressed from a handheld compact digital camera to a sparkling new DSLR. I have taught myself Photoshop CS2 and CS3 and I know my way around my camera pretty well now. The problem is I have a folder on my PC with 100+ of my best shots in it. They aren’t much use there though. Like most of you I want to start to get a bit of recognition for my work. Get some constructive criticism and some tips from the pros. I want to make photography more than a hobby…eventually. Google popped RB up on a search and I signed up. So far I am very impressed with whats on offer. I now find myself more motivated than ever to find those top-quality shots. Feel free to comment away on any of my pieces. I say again…hello to all on RB – Its an honour to be here.

Wikinews investigates claim McCain plagiarized speech from Wikipedia / From Wikinews, the free news source you can write! Saturday, August 23, 2008 On August 11, US Senator and 2008 presidential republican candidate John McCain gave a speech regarding the crisis between Georgia and Russia. Following the speech, a regular Wikipedia editor noticed that his speech was very similar to an article on Wikipedia also regarding the crisis, in what could be considered plagiarism. Wikinews was able to talk to that editor about how he found out about the similarities and what he did in response. Wikinews also took a deeper look at the claim and investigated further McCain continued his speech saying, “Georgia is an ancient country, at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and one of the world’s first nations to adopt Christianity as an official religion. After a brief period of independence following the Russian revolution, the Red Army forced Georgia to join the Soviet Union in 1922. As the Soviet Union crumbled at the end of the Cold War, Georgia regained its independence in 1991, but its early years were marked by instability, corruption, and economic crises. “ While reading the first few paragraphs, the Wikipedia editor Killing Vector, who wishes to be called by his contributor name in fear of retribution for coming forward with the claim, noticed a striking similarity to McCain’s speech and the Wikipedia article on the country of Georgia. Not only did he notice the similarities, but after reading through the article’s edit history, ‘Killing Vector’ noticed that his speech might have been lifted from Wikipedia, with some of the material in McCain’s speech dating prior to the start of the Georgian and Russian crisis. “I began reading the text of McCain’s address on the Georgia crisis, and as I was browsing it the irregularity jumped out almost immediately. The paragraphs which discussed the history of Georgia simply didn’t fit with the rest of the speech; the rhetorical style was jarringly different. I figured, “where’s someone in a hurry going to get basic information on the Republic of Georgia?” I opened up Wikipedia, went to the article, picked a recent but not current revision more or less at random (July 24th), and hit gold on the first try; McCain’s speech and the Wikipedia article had significant strings of words in common, emphasized the same events, made largely the same word choices,” said Vector to Wikinews. Although other media outlets reported the alleged plagiarism, the two passages below were dated at least one week prior to the Georgian and Russian crisis. The first two paragraphs of McCain’s speech appear to resemble the Wikipedia article in the history dated July 24, 2008. “Two paragraphs, about an eighth of the full speech, contain material directly copied from Wikipedia or superficially modified from its text. Those two paragraphs constitute the entire factual background of the speech, though — the rest is reaction and proposed policy,” added Vector. Example (identical wording is in italics. ): Wikipedia – ….one of the first countries in the world to adopt Christianity as an official religion. McCain – ….one of the world’s first nations to adopt Christianity as an official religion. Wikipedia – After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Georgia had a brief period of independence as a Democratic Republic (1918-1921), which was terminated by the Red Army invasion of Georgia. Georgia became part of the Soviet Union in 1922 and regained its independence in 1991. Early post-Soviet years was marked by a civil unrest and economic crisis. McCain – After a brief period of independence following the Russian revolution, the Red Army forced Georgia to join the Soviet Union in 1922. As the Soviet Union crumbled at the end of the Cold War, Georgia regained its independence in 1991, but its early years were marked by instability, corruption, and economic crises. ... We did not copy Wikipedia in Sen. McCain’s remarks. There are only so many ways to state basic historical facts and dates and that any similarities to Wikipedia were only coincidental. ... / —Brian Rogers, McCain campaign spokesman McCain’s campaign denies they plagiarized Wikipedia, but also didn’t state whether they used it as a source for his speech. “We did not copy Wikipedia in Sen. McCain’s remarks. There are only so many ways to state basic historical facts and dates and that any similarities to Wikipedia were only coincidental,” said a spokesman for the McCain campaign, Brian Rogers to The Politico. Wikinews contacted McCain’s campaign, but has yet to receive a response. Wikinews e-mailed Jay Walsh, the director of communications for the Wikimedia Foundation to see what they thought of the situation, and what if anything they planned to do about it. “We aren’t particularly concerned with this,” said Walsh who also added that “I’m only aware of this situation through media coverage I’ve seen, nor do we or I have any in-depth detail about the situation. “ “I would say it’s a good practice to attribute text or content whenever possible. Obviously when it’s a matter of copyright then there are legal considerations, but the Foundation is not able to examine individual cases,” added Walsh. Wikinews attempted to contact Mike Godwin, the legal counsel for the Foundation, but has yet to receive a response. Vector stands by his claim and also notes what he calls ‘dishonesty’ on the part of McCain’s campaign. “What concerns me more, as a voter, is the ethical issue. Plagiarism comes from dishonesty and intellectual laziness on the part of an individual, but McCain’s campaign’s later denial adopts that individual’s dishonesty,” stated Vector.

Lake Superior froze over this year – which explains why we haven’t had any lake-effect snow. Anywho, last time I remember it freezing over was many years ago, and it was awesome. There were huge icy “mountains” waaaaaay out from the actual shoreline, and the ice was so thick, you could walk out to them and climb them. Because of this, I’ve been wanting to go out and see how it looked this year. So, this morning I woke up fairly early (for somebody who works afternoon shift), and Johnny & I drove out to Little Girl’s Point. It sounded awesome with the huge sheets of ice grinding across each other and moving and such, but was definately not as cool to look at as it was that one year. Despite the lack of the icy mountains, some things were still photo-worthy. So I get out my camera, and walk down to the icy beach. I go to turn my camera on, and what happens? Nothing. Abso-bloody-lutely nothing. My batteries were dead – I’d grabbed the wrong ones out of the drawer – stupid rechargeables, they look the same, dead or alive!!! Johnny takes his out of his camera (he’s not too big into photography anyhow) and hands them to me. I switch them out, and flick the switch on my camera. Nothing. again. He had done the same thing. So we drove all the way out to the Big Lake just to listen to some ice crackle, and to find out that we need to recharge our batteries. It was enough to make me cry…almost.

Many I joined purely so I could see what was being uploaded. / It was an easy way to your artwork as it appeared online. But now I find I have less time to sit here perusing galleries for hours on end. I have work going on in the background, images in stages of illumination, degradation and highlighting, plus articles to write (and not just for Redbubble!), and I have an active offline-photo-life. Oh, and a wife, day-job, and have realised that sleep really does help me to live better! (So no more 28hour stints devoted to RB!) / But I continue to peruse the art of those people I have faved … because they inspire, teach, and enthuse me to be as good as them! 2. I’ve discovered that I can use the TAGS to find the photographs that appeal to me. / Much like a search-engine, I can find and see so much more when I seek out particular words. Consequently, I’ll actually see a lot more of what’s going on around Redbubble by NOT restricting myself to particular groups. Cool! 3. Aaargh, moderators, PLEASE curb your enthusiasm for BULK bubble-mails. / Recently I was forced to turn on my bubble-mail due to my Moderator status with Adelaide/SA . Hotdang, you people like to tell the world some of the silliest stuff. I’m so glad I don’t have to read, “Today’s avatar is by…” ever again! (PS. Changing group avatars (chopped square photograph) is like changing a business logo every fortnight.) / BTW, I rarely bulk bubble-mail the Adelaide/SA members … We have a Forum !! Since I cannot turn off my Bubble-mail, leaving has been the best next option. 4. NOT BECAUSE OF ANYONE’S ART! / Let it be said that I’m the first person to stand up and applaud the amazing quality of work being uploaded to RB every day! So let it be understood that I will continue to notice the grandeous genres, the contagious collaborations, the post-production manipulation of multiple images and/or enhanced entomology, and the ongoing ogling of homo-sapien’s. Does any of that make any sense? Anyhow, there must be a trillion RB groups out there now. Heck, I may rejoin a few of those groups as time goes by. BUT for now I’m off to search your tags and categories … ..... .... ... Ah, the return of binary harmony is easy on the ears…

hello world….well the few lovely people that will actually read this journal entry. I have THE most exciting news!!!!! I am pregnant with 13 week identical twins…I know babies number five AND six hehe We are beyond excited (somewhat over the shell shock) we went for “just one more” and have honestly hit the jackpot. My husband, other children and I are just thrilled. This is why I don’t have (make?) much time for photography. / My time will come and I’m looking forward to it…but at the exact same second as wanting more time for ‘me’ I know that when I get that time it will mean my delightful children will be independent enonough to not need us so much…it’s bittersweet already… I shall keep you posted about our health as best I can…all is well so far… Thankyou Susan XoxOo and babes :):)

Why people are giving me impression that I am unimportant? I honestly trying to be helpful, always if I can help I DO.. With me it is EXACTLY opposite – if I need little help once in a while, I CAN NOT find anybody. / Always they have excuses NOT to.. What is wrong with me? / Because the reason is in me… Lost and tired…

  • This’ll be quick - I thought my new camera didn’t come with a flash unit, since it’s fancy - and it’s got a hot shoe. I just figured I’d have to buy a flash if I needed one…so I attached the lens, set the date, formatted the card, and clicked—and nearly fell off my chair when the flash unit flew up and fired! I didn’t know it had one! I thought it was just…you know…the empty hot shoe. lol OK, I need to read the instructions. Who knows what else this little marvel might do that I’m not expecting? Maybe it fixes dinner?

Injustices! / We can understand that word in so many ways! / How do we respond to this? / To do so ,we need to get all the facts ,from all sides, analyse without prejudice for either party! / Injustices! / Why have so many great men or woman, have been put away, behind walls? / Forgotten by society, / Forgotten , by laws and rights, / Why do so many have to suffer for the sake of others? / Why are we growing cold? / When we see, injustices , / All over, / All around us! / At what ever level of society! / Injustices! / In-Just-cease / To see, / To ponder, / To analyse, / To make a choice, / To fight against!
