While testing out the new (at the time) Aquarel pigment sticks, I needed a large project on paper, so I got the biggest sheet of paper I’ve ever seen and launched into a drawing that would end up taking me 6 months on and off. / The sleep of reason begets monsters. I consider this my masterpiece at this point because it took the longest time, I used a new medium, and it’s the largest work on paper I’ve ever attempted.

The real reason journals have been changed?

In the real world I have many things cross my desk. / Many curious pieces of pre published writing for major publications, in what capacity I will not say but recently I had one that very much grabbed my attention. It was an interview with our own Peter with a trade financial / start up journal popular with investors. / What I read in this was startling albeit may not get printed at all and it had some heavy editing to do to make it palatable to its intended publication it’s contents unabridged threw me for a loop. / I contacted Admin about it but he has not responded, so as far as he is concerned I take it he is not too concerned with its contents and the revelations it holds. / These are some edited pieces from (as I already noted) the unabridged prepublication draft. Peter Styles, (peter) Martin Hoskins (pilgrim) and Paul Vanzella have created a phenomenon in Web 2.0 Community sites for Australia. In the space of a twelve months they have gathered 50,000 members risen to be within the top 400 sites in the country and recently pocketed the Netguide’s People’s Choice Award…. It then goes on about profit projections and margins for the first 18 months… then this… (A Red Bubble representative) says the first 12 months were as exciting as they were emotionally draining as well as running a virtual 24 hour business he also became a father again. / “It was nice to relate to a real baby for a change rather than a virtual one” A precursor to this: “… I believe it has become a bit cumbersome in relation to what we first envisioned. We never thought Tee Shirts would be as popular as they have become and the talent we have attracted. We were expecting to be photography print-on-demand originally but that changed dramatically…” this one blew me away: “…we plan to concentrate more on the Tee shirts and believe we are well on our way to becoming a big player in the burgeoning Tee shirt print-on-demand market and will easily over take Zazzle. Threadless , Rumplo et al due to the inherent community spirit. It is cheaper and the problems fewer it customer satisfaction and freight cost, nothing like the art section of the business…” “… the art section has become unwieldy and the freight is a real problem, not so much as in packaging but rather other countries delivery systems , you just can’t control the problems which leads to customer dissatisfaction and a high rate of unprofitable credits because of this we plan to scale the whole Art section back and pour more money into the Tee Shirt sales, the Writing section is totally non profit but costs nothing really to maintain and will stay as / a cheap Community enticer, more like a Blog….” The cruncher: “… in reality it will be a blessing as a whole the Art Community is high maintenance it is proof positive of the 20/80 production theory- where Tee Shirts are 20% effort and production cost they are 80% of the profit whereas the Art section is the direct opposite- a nightmare. We had to employ Community Managers who in turn needed volunteers who in turn needed special training to cope with the myriad of problems dealing with artists and photographers in general…” “…there attitudes also scare of potential customers who browse the site as non members due to their varied political and social views, many in the extreme and quite frankly I’m just sick of it and it’s not good for business, we have been tolerant but after so many chances profitability is starting to take precedent over baby sitting…… some times I feel I’m watching over a Community that’s based on a Kindergarten crossed with the United Nations….” / “.. we introduced Groups to keep warring factions apart but that failed….” / :… these sorts of things are not as common or extreme in the Tee Shirt community and the Writers are very passive…” It then leads on the more projections on memberships losses in relations to sales made in different areas. / As you can see a whole new future for RED Bubble. / Where are you Admin? / Have you got some questions to answer?

Making choices in self portraiture

This is my homework for the course I am currently doing at Brunswick Street Gallery. We have to take a self portrait which does not show our face but which does show something of ourselves. This may not be the one I submit, but it has been an interesting exercize and I thought I would share. I often post work here without much of an explanation into the choices I make. I thought it might be nice to make it available so you can see that I do actually put a bit of thought into my work, even if it is not obvious at first glance. The Easels: / Faded and old. They represent myself as an artist. How of late I am taking fewer and fewer photos and am out of practice. They are scattered at random, which is a lot like my very hectic and chaotic life. Yet they all match, which shows my underlying need to have organisation, even if it is organised chaos. You may notice the empty frame. For me this represents not only my occupation, but it’s emptiness means it acts as a window. A way to see into me. It is a comment on the whole image as well as an element within it. The Doll: / This is a childhood doll and has my old name written on it (from before I became Jo O’Brien). So it connects to my past and reminds me of a time passed. She is naked, which reflects how I feel as an artist, always confessing through my art. She is torn at both arms from being pulled in a tug-of-war game. Much like how I feel when I have more things requiring my time than I have time for. On a more human level. She represents my desire to one day have children, my “femaleness”, my nurturing side. The Costume: / It was scavenged from an op shop. Something I absolutely adore doing. And it fits like a second skin, showing my comfort in front of the camera. It’s close colour match to my skin implies nudity which highlights a more general level of comfort with my body, and ability to play a role within my own skin. It’s second hand nature reminds me that a ‘creative artist life’ was never my first choice. In fact, I studied Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Maths Methods in VCE and always had an aptitude for the sciences. Art was an accident. The Location: / At home in the back yard. Here I feel most relaxed and comfortable. It has been the location of numerous photo shoots and self portraits, so much so that I would feel like I was abondoning this space to take self portraits elsewhere. It also represents for me, my ability to live off my creativity, as my best selling shot was taken here. More generally I enjoy the idea of fences, of what they hold in and out. And of how to break them down. This is a theme I like to play with in a lot of my work- the emotional and psychological barriers we put up around ourselves, often needlessly. Setting up the shot: / I wanted to appear within the forest of easels and yet comfortable which dictated my pose, leaning gently against the fence. This shows my acceptance of the situation and environment and willingness to participate within it. However I am still holding my doll and not interacting with any other part of the environment. This suggests I still cling to something from my childhood, and have insecurites about the art world and my credibility as an artist. Your thoughts?

Anima and Animus in Love

Anima and Animus are the terms for male & female aspects of personality, C.G. Jung. / In this story I have used the characters of a man and woman falling in love and the repercussions in dialogue to depict this.
