Hey there RB guru’s, guys, gals and just arty people like myself! ;-) Anyways this entry is to let you people out on the www that I have bought a new magazine which has given me some wonderful insights into Adobe Photoshop and the functions like dodge, burn, sponge, etc!!! / I think these have been the catalyst that I have needed to create some photos that I normally wouldn’t have been able to create! And it is also the undoing of reality I think with my photo’s as I think I may venture to the more surreal area’s of my mind and they can be quite scary at times hehe!!! But in saying that I am a realist at heart and I think that will triumph in “most” of my works! Anyway if anybody is interested in seeing some of my creations/flukes, then just check out my profile ;-) Cheers Scott

RT, i love it, Realist Traditional but it sounds like ‘Arty’!! and you’re all the Arty members! Aaanywho. We’ have our group FORUM here But I just wanted to say hello, I’m the new group moderator, Kath handed me the reigns recently which is awesome, but I’m not too sure what to do with them yet. For now, the best way for me to Communicate with you all is if you watch my profile so that you get the RT journal notifications. That would be awesome, then we can all keep up to speed, Also, is everyone happy with the group guidelines or would a journal entry outlining them be a big help? It CAN be done. and any other requests, just leave a comment here and I’ll see what I can do about it. okay, love to hear from you all! / -hatefueled (or you can call me Gozza)

  • Am I an Artist??
    by Heidi Garner

Hello friends, / I am feeling somewhat frustrated at the moment, it could be the pending full moon, or maybe not….

Hello friends, / I am feeling somewhat frustrated at the moment, it could be the pending full moon, or maybe not. I seem to be questioning my art, my style, as I am entering more exhibitions and finding no sales and no prizes. It is all contemporary, abstract, conceptual etc that wins. No traditional realist stuff. Even the traditional shows are now ‘broadening their horizons’ to include non traditional. Why? There are already so many contemporary exclusive or preferred shows with abstracts and the like. / I find myself asking ‘am I a true artist or is what I do no more than a ‘job’ I enjoy.’? I understand the diversity of art and I appreciate and enjoy many styles. But sometimes I just can’t understand what sells and wins. These days the art that does sell and win needs a brochure to explain what it is and what it means. Sooo, I am seriously asking myself ‘WHAT IS ART’?? I am not educated in art. (maybe thats the problem) I don’t know who is who in art. Therefore, apparently, I can hardly call myself a professional artist. / I just love to draw and paint. I love colour and using it in and on many mediums. I love to see beauty in all that is around me and reproduce that (coz that is essentially what I do most of the time….copy) / Is realist art going out of style? Old fashioned? Will it even be classed as ‘art’ in the future? Just my 2 cents worth. Your opinions are welcome :)

We hope to see your lovely paintings of that element none of us can live without!! A celebration of Water, in all its wondrous glory. Please see our new group, read our flowing guidelines and flood our group with gushes of paintings! Trickles and dribbles also welcome. Water, the Hub of Life. / Water is its mater and matrix, mother and medium. / Water is the most extraordinary substance! / Practically all its properties are anomolous, which enabled life to use it as building / material for its machinery. / Life is water dancing to the tune of solids. / – Albert Szent-Gyorgyi (1972) Your Hosts: / Avril and James

  • Create A Realistic Shallow Depth Of Field In Photoshop
    by Alison Johnston

Sometimes we get it all wrong don’t we ? You’ve just taken the most fabulous image of great aunt bertha and when you upload it your computer ….. yikes …. wrong F Stop, wrong everything and that terrific image has no shallow depth of field. What to do ….... we could go and blur the heck out of it with Gaussian Blur and hope that no one notices that it doesn’t really mimic that made in the camera – or, you could carry on reading this tutorial :-) The start image is brought us by cyborg1us over at Stock Exchange. Click through for the larger image. I’ve also got 2 images (below) for you to look at. Both images have had too much of the filter applied to them. The first image is the Gaussian Blur, the second image is the other blurring effect you are going to do here. Gaussian Blur The Other Blur While both of them look really terrible because I have over done the effect, the second image holds more of what was originally there. Whilst it is blurred, the edges around the leaves, highlights etc., remain sharper and more accurately represent a shallow depth of field created in camera. Creating this effect is really simple, where it will get a little tougher is extracting a person or people that you want to keep tack sharp. But we’ll have a look at doing that and a way to avoid the fringing/haloing that will more than likely occur from the blur effect on the layer below. Open the image and duplicate it twice by either dragging it to the new layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette or pressing Ctrl + J on the keyboard. Name the first duplicate layer Gaussian and the second one Shape. Turn off the Shape Layer and working on the Gaussian filter go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur and choose a radius of 5 pixels (on this particular image). In the image below I have selected an area to show you that using Gaussian Blur makes the ‘whites/highlights’ in the image go a little gray coloured. Turn on the Shape Layer (image will revert to the original look) and go to Filter>Blur>Shape Blur choose the Hexagon Shape and set the radius to 5 pixels, click OK to accept. Notice in the image below how the whites/highlights have not turned a gray colour and that even though the leaves have been blurred, and unlike the Gaussian Blur filter, have retained some of their edge sharpness. As a quick aside to this tutorial, with the shape blur done, change the blend mode to darken and you’ll end up with quite a nice porcelain type effect on the image. Back to the tut. Right, you’re more than likely to have great aunt bertha in the image and I haven’t got anyone in mine :-( so I’m going to add a shape to the b/ground and pretend I have extracted it, even though I’ve only duplicated it and I’m going to change the colour of the duplicated shape to white so I can show you something and how to fix it. With your subject/s selected press Ctrl + J on the keyboard to isolate them to a new layer. Click back on the b/ground layer, and if you haven’t already, double click on it to make it an active layer and accept the default name of Layer 0 or give it a name of your choice. Working on this layer go to Filter>Blur>Shape Blur and do the same as you did earlier. There is a huge possibility that you are going to end up with some haloing from blurring this layer. See image. So, how can you go about making sure this doesn’t happen – actually, it’s a lot easier than you would expect. Turn of the top layer and working on the b/ground layer – please make sure that you are not working on the original image. Hopefully when you opened the original image you immediately duplicated it and then closed the original – we are going to do a little bit of cloning on the this layer so that the haloing is not visible. Go grab your Clone Stamp Tool and you are going to go around the people/objects etc., that you have selected to remain sharp and clone some of the outside (that which you will eventually blur) into the selected object. You don’t have to get too perfect with the cloning, as it will be blurred anyway. See image. Once you have finished the cloning, turn back on the layer with your selection and any haloing will have gone :-) I’ve gone ahead and given my great aunt bertha a bevel and emboss and a pattern overlay :-) Experiment with other Shapes, Blend Modes and Layer Opacity to see if you can come up with something else.

  • The Unveiling of Coy Kiss
    by Carrie Glenn

I am proud to unveil my new painting titled Coy Kiss / I have been working on this over the last several months and have finally finished it as of last night. There are many layers and texture. This painting literally changes and comes alive in different lighting. I used acrylic and some other mediums to slow the drying process. After it was done I finished the water in my painting with gloss varnish in certain areas to achieve water highlights…so it actually appears like the water is real…and that perhaps that there is even movement in it. This is a special piece to me, there is a lot of symbolism and beauty in Koi fish to me. Also I am drawn to fish in general and life in water. / The bright contrasting colors and dead space of this work is what attracted me to it in the first place. I want to say a special “Thank You” to Rebecca Cruz who let me paint her photo titled Koi As I was creating the name for it, the play on words for “Coy” just kept coming to my heart. Thus “Coy Kiss”! / There is a written work from Venus and Adonis by William Shakespeare, that I chose to describe my work. I feel it perfectly captures my heart for this piece and the moment… ...”Never did passenger in summer’s heat / More thirst for drink than she for this good turn. / Her help she sees, but help she cannot get; / She bathes in water, yet her fire must burn: / ‘O! pity,’ ‘gan she cry, ‘flint-hearted boy: / ‘Tis but a kiss I beg; why art thou coy?”... It was a wonderful piece to work on and I put a lot of myself into it…hopefully you can feel that coming through to you. / To check it out and leave a comment click here Enjoy! xoxo

I want to commission a sculptor that can create a lifelike outdoor sculpture of me. I want it completed by my 50th birthday in May 2010. I live in Newcastle NSW so it would be good to have someone close. I want it to look like my “Pieta” photograph of me kneeling nude on the floor cradling my Siamese cat. I have angel wings. Bubble mail me if you are interested or know of someone.

Hey I need to get more of my work shown , so if anyone knows of any art shows coming up or galleries I should submit my work to please let me know. I know I need to get some new and better pieces created and this might just be the motivation I need. My goal for this new year is to get back into working color and put together a few smaller pencil drawing books…. but its so ^%!*#*( discouraging to hear from galleries who say they love my work but then int he same breath ask me what else can I do. As if pencil drawings isn’t art? Black and white realistic pencil drawings is what i do best, yet I am one step way from giving it all up!! Are there no galleries or art shows that recognize black and white drawings or realistic traditional art any more? Is this the end of real art? David J.
