I’ve just added a couple more abstract photography images to my portfolio. I was going to add a few more, but then questions formed in my mind. I create abstract photography and yet draw and paint with a very high degree of realism – photorealism in many cases. What on earth does that say about me as an artist? Or as a person for that matter? Am I just striving for balance in expressing my creativity (being a Libran thats quite possible), or am I just plain weird (quite possible as well)? To be successful as an artist (painter or photographer), those in the know claim that you must specialise, find a niche and develop it. I read a quote today that has resonated with me all day – “Art is not in the eye of the beholder, Art is in the heart of the artist”. Can’t remember who said it though. So. I guess I shall continue to follow my heart, because to do otherwise would be like denying part of me. LOL – maybe I will be a trailblazer in the artworld and create my own Abstract Photography-Realistic Painting niche.

We have launched our first challenges and invite our wonderful members to take a look and enter their best works. We also invite all our friends to join, even if you do not paint. If you love wildlife and pets and would like to write about the subjects, we are very happy to have you join our group and submit your writing and chat to us in the forums. Every little helps in our passion to make the world more aware of the need to support and help other creatures. As the group is for realistic hand painted art, unfortunately photography and digital art will not be accepted. Our group only started a few days ago and there are stunning works of art to be seen. We would like to keep bmails to a mimimum and encourage our members to use the forums instead. We all love what we do so much and it would be wonderful to get to know one another and share that love in the forums. The challenges are: / Pet Paintings / and / Wildlife Paintings – Endangered Species Thank you / :-)

  • A NOVEL IDEA's 2008 FALL CHALLENGE WINNER: The Sea Queen

I finally understand what Billy Corgan was on about in his Smashing Pumpkin days when he swooned and crooned, ‘today is the greatest day I’ve ever known.’ This is for a few reasons. 1. I woke up this morning to a cloudless blue sky falling in warm golden pieces and patches through my curtains onto my face / 2. I was woken up by an early morning phone call invitation to my favourite place for breakfast from my favourite friend / 3. As of this weekend I am the owner of the entire series of Sex and the City on DVD / 4. I’m also the new owner of a bright purple yoga mat which apparently now gives me ‘cred’ in my body balance class, which incidentally is also happening today. But most of all… apart from these obviously fantastic reasons to be feeling that today is some kind of wonderful, on my way into the kitchen to brew my first vanilla coffee for the day, I checked my computer to see what had been happening around the RedBubble world. And there it was: my first genuine serious writing win. The winners of the ANIFC08 are: Gayla and JC and I thoroughly enjoyed every entry we received for the A Novel Idea Fall Challenge 2008. We spent the last few days reading and discussing each of the submissions and have come to agreement on the top three entries: First Place: The Sea Queen by Holly Ringland I think my squeals woke up my household. The US$100 prize money will seriously be a framed wall-hung reminder over my writing desk. The inclusion of The Sea Queen in ANI’s anthology is genuinely the biggest writing high I think I’ve ever had and will wait with baited breath for it to come out. But what really reeeeeeeeeeally makes this feel so damn good is that my work has been read by the incredibly talented writers of the RedBubble community who have chosen it as the winner of this competition. A big congratulations to Alison Pearce and Nancy Ames as well – links to their stories are here Bradley, JC and Gayla… thank you wholeheartedly for all of the effort and time you put into A Novel Idea. Thank you for reading my work, and thank you for selecting my piece The Sea Queen as the Fall Challenge Winner of 2008. Thank you for making this the greatest day my writing world has ever known.

  • The Unveiling of Coy Kiss
    by Carrie Glenn

I am proud to unveil my new painting titled Coy Kiss / I have been working on this over the last several months and have finally finished it as of last night. There are many layers and texture. This painting literally changes and comes alive in different lighting. I used acrylic and some other mediums to slow the drying process. After it was done I finished the water in my painting with gloss varnish in certain areas to achieve water highlights…so it actually appears like the water is real…and that perhaps that there is even movement in it. This is a special piece to me, there is a lot of symbolism and beauty in Koi fish to me. Also I am drawn to fish in general and life in water. / The bright contrasting colors and dead space of this work is what attracted me to it in the first place. I want to say a special “Thank You” to Rebecca Cruz who let me paint her photo titled Koi As I was creating the name for it, the play on words for “Coy” just kept coming to my heart. Thus “Coy Kiss”! / There is a written work from Venus and Adonis by William Shakespeare, that I chose to describe my work. I feel it perfectly captures my heart for this piece and the moment… ...”Never did passenger in summer’s heat / More thirst for drink than she for this good turn. / Her help she sees, but help she cannot get; / She bathes in water, yet her fire must burn: / ‘O! pity,’ ‘gan she cry, ‘flint-hearted boy: / ‘Tis but a kiss I beg; why art thou coy?”... It was a wonderful piece to work on and I put a lot of myself into it…hopefully you can feel that coming through to you. / To check it out and leave a comment click here Enjoy! xoxo

For those of you that follow my work take this opportunity to see works behind glass that I have around my home. Some of these pieces are originals and some are ideas taken from others’ works. It is just a collection of works that I have put together to ‘show’ to a gallery owner in Marmaris as he is interested in displaying my work ….nothing ventured, nothing gained. Sorry about the angles, but it’s 7pm here, dark and I needed the flash. Typical Turkey, contacted me today and wants to meet tomorrow ….nothing like spur of the moment to jolt activity! / Anyhow – the Not Published stuff is here if you are interested:

  • Looking for Co-host for new group - Photo Realistic Artwork
    by Jo Holden

Hi Bubblers! / I’m interested in starting a new group on the bubble to showcase PHOTO REALISTIC ARTWORK and am looking for a co-host. There are some mind-blowing pieces on Red Bubble that are so incredibly realistic that you have to actually double-check to make sure that they aren’t a photo! These are the types of works I’d love to showcase. I know how time consuming photo realistic work is and how much patience is required to pull it off so I think it would be great if there were a group to celebrate these efforts. The group would accept all traditional mediums and all real-life subjects (portraiture, landscapes, animals etc..). I haven’t been able to find a group like this on the bubble so if one exists, please let me know! If you are interested in co-hosting with me, please let me know. It’s something I’d really like to start up in the new year. / Jo / P.S. Please feel free to favourite this so others can see it too. Thanks!

realism – information provided by wikipedia:

Realism in the visual arts and literature is the depiction of subjects as they appear in everyday life, without embellishment or interpretation. The term is also used to describe works of art which, in revealing a truth, may emphasize the ugly or sordid. Realism also refers to a mid-19th century cultural movement with its roots in France, where it was a very popular art form around the mid to late 1800s. It came about with the introduction of photography - a new visual source that created a desire for people to produce things that look “objectively real”. Realism was heavily against romanticism, a genre dominating French literature and artwork in the late 18th and early 19th century. Undistorted by personal bias, Realism believed in the ideology of objective reality and revolted against exaggerated emotionalism. Truth and accuracy became the goals of many Realists.
