I have shared it with one of the groups I help run with Chipper called Untouchables / It’s a group that has No processing, not even cropping.     Many of you guys know my passion for the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda after visiting there as a photojournalist in April and May this year. Much of our time was spent at HEAL Africa Hospital in Goma, in the eastern province known as South Kivu. South Kivu is considered ‘lawless’ as the various militias roam the countryside and villages quite literally raping and pillaging. I say various because there are many. One consists of the remnants of those who slaughtered their fellow Rwandans 13 years ago, another is from Robert Mugabe’s private army (think ‘Blood Diamond’ – that’s their style). Yet another is secretly supported by the Rwandan government who are lured by the promise of diamonds and more land. You see D.R. Congo has the most natural resources of any country in Africa. This should be a cause for celebration. But it brings heartbreak, despair and the most overwhelming cruelty you could imagine possible. You must wonder at my obsession with this cause. The thing is, it’s invaded my mind and kidnapped my heart. Following is an article about D.R. Congo. It was published in the New York Times in October this year. You remember October. It was less than 4 weeks ago. I hope you read it. It’s not meant to make you sad and turn away. It’s an unashamed attempt to get you involved. In prayers and you bet, in money. These guys don’t want your sympathy they want your help. This is written about another hospital apart from HEAL Africa. But the story is exactly the story of the HEAL Africa hospital. And the people you seein my photos. Take my word for it. I stood in the victims urine and feces. I touched their macheted limbs. And I played with kids who suffer diseases we fix with one of those pesky little things we call needles. Ladies this is a call to action. In February (14th lunch time) my sister here she is… she is hosting a lunch for Lyn Lusi the head of HEAL Africa. Yep she’s going to be in Melbourne. And I am getting a table together. It’s $55 a head and Lyn will tell you first hand what is happening in Congo. Much of it will be about the treatment of women. I’d love love love to have some Red Bubble chicks at my table. $55 for charity, a great meal and words that will change your life, from one of the rarest people you will ever meet. Please please please come. Anyway to the article. Read it please. Knowledge is power. The New York Times October 2007 BUKAVU, Congo — Denis Mukwege, a Congolese gynecologist, cannot bear to listen to the stories his patients tell him anymore. Every day, 10 new women and girls who have been raped show up at his hospital. Many have been so sadistically attacked from the inside out, butchered by bayonets and assaulted with chunks of wood, that their reproductive and digestive systems are beyond repair. “We don’t know why these rapes are happening, but one thing is clear,” said Dr. Mukwege, who works in South Kivu Province, the epicenter of Congo’s rape epidemic. “They are done to destroy women.” Eastern Congo is going through another one of its convulsions of violence, and this time it seems that women are being systematically attacked on a scale never before seen here. According to the United Nations, 27,000 sexual assaults were reported in 2006 in South Kivu Province alone, and that may be just a fraction of the total number across the country. “The sexual violence in Congo is the worst in the world,” said John Holmes, the United Nations under secretary general for humanitarian affairs. “The sheer numbers, the wholesale brutality, the culture of impunity — it’s appalling.” The days of chaos in Congo were supposed to be over. Last year, this country of 66 million people held a historic election that cost $500 million and was intended to end Congo’s various wars and rebellions and its tradition of epically bad government. But the elections have not unified the country or significantly strengthened the Congolese government’s hand to deal with renegade forces, many of them from outside the country. The justice system and the military still barely function, and United Nations officials say Congolese government troops are among the worst offenders when it comes to rape. Large swaths of the country, especially in the east, remain authority-free zones where civilians are at the mercy of heavily armed groups who have made warfare a livelihood and survive by raiding villages and abducting women for ransom. According to victims, one of the newest groups to emerge is called the Rastas, a mysterious gang of dreadlocked fugitives who live deep in the forest, wear shiny tracksuits and Los Angeles Lakers jerseys and are notorious for burning babies, kidnapping women and literally chopping up anybody who gets in their way. United Nations officials said the so-called Rastas were once part of the Hutu militias who fled Rwanda after committing genocide there in 1994, but now it seems they have split off on their own and specialize in freelance cruelty. Honorata Barinjibanwa, an 18-year-old woman with high cheekbones and downcast eyes, said she was kidnapped from a village that the Rastas raided in April and kept as a sex slave until August. Most of that time she was tied to a tree, and she still has rope marks ringing her delicate neck. The men would untie her for a few hours each day to gang-rape her, she said. “I’m weak, I’m angry, and I don’t know how to restart my life,” she said from Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, where she was taken after her captors freed her. She is also pregnant. While rape has always been a weapon of war, researchers say they fear that Congo’s problem has metastasized into a wider social phenomenon. “It’s gone beyond the conflict,” said Alexandra Bilak, who has studied various armed groups around Bukavu, on the shores of Lake Kivu. She said that the number of women abused and even killed by their husbands seemed to be going up and that brutality toward women had become “almost normal.” Malteser International, a European aid organization that runs health clinics in eastern Congo, estimates that it will treat 8,000 sexual violence cases this year, compared with 6,338 last year. The organization said that in one town, Shabunda, 70 percent of the women reported being sexually brutalized. At Panzi Hospital, where Dr. Mukwege performs as many as six rape-related surgeries a day, bed after bed is filled with women lying on their backs, staring at the ceiling, with colostomy bags hanging next to them because of all the internal damage. “I still have pain and feel chills,” said Kasindi Wabulasa, a patient who was raped in February by five men. The men held an AK-47 rifle to her husband’s chest and made him watch, telling him that if he closed his eyes, they would shoot him. When they were finished, Ms. Wabulasa said, they shot him anyway. In almost all the reported cases, the culprits are described as young men with guns, and in the deceptively beautiful hills here, there is no shortage of them: poorly paid and often mutinous government soldiers; homegrown militias called the Mai-Mai who slick themselves with oil before marching into battle; members of paramilitary groups originally from Uganda and Rwanda who have destabilized this area over the past 10 years in a quest for gold and all the other riches that can be extracted from Congo’s exploited soil. The attacks go on despite the presence of the largest United Nations peacekeeping force in the world, with more than 17,000 troops. Few seem to be spared. Dr. Mukwege said his oldest patient was 75, his youngest 3. “Some of these girls whose insides have been destroyed are so young that they don’t understand what happened to them,” Dr. Mukwege said. “They ask me if they will ever be able to have children, and it’s hard to look into their eyes.” No one — doctors, aid workers, Congolese and Western researchers — can explain exactly why this is happening. “That is the question,” said André Bourque, a Canadian consultant who works with aid groups in eastern Congo. “Sexual violence in Congo reaches a level never reached anywhere else. It is even worse than in Rwanda during the genocide.” Impunity may be a contributing factor, Mr. Bourque added, saying that very few of the culprits are punished. Many Congolese aid workers denied that the problem was cultural and insisted that the widespread rapes were not the product of something ingrained in the way men treated women in Congolese society. “If that were the case, this would have showed up long ago,” said Wilhelmine Ntakebuka, who coordinates a sexual violence program in Bukavu. Instead, she said, the epidemic of rapes seems to have started in the mid-1990s. That coincides with the waves of Hutu militiamen who escaped into Congo’s forests after exterminating 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus during Rwanda’s genocide 13 years ago. Mr. Holmes said that while government troops might have raped thousands of women, the most vicious attacks had been carried out by Hutu militias. “These are people who were involved with the genocide and have been psychologically destroyed by it,” he said. Mr. Bourque called this phenomenon “reversed values” and said it could develop in heavily traumatized areas that had been steeped in conflict for many years, like eastern Congo. This place, one of the greenest, hilliest and most scenic slices of central Africa, continues to reverberate from the aftershocks of the genocide next door. Take the recent fighting near Bukavu between the Congolese Army and Laurent Nkunda, a dissident general who commands a formidable rebel force. Mr. Nkunda is a Congolese Tutsi who has accused the Congolese Army of supporting Hutu militias, which the army denies. Mr. Nkunda says his rebel force is simply protecting Tutsi civilians from being victimized again. But his men may be no better. Willermine Mulihano said she was raped twice — first by Hutu militiamen two years ago and then by Nkunda soldiers in July. Two soldiers held her legs apart, while three others took turns violating her. “When I think about what happened,” she said, “I feel anxious and brokenhearted.” She is also lonely. Her husband divorced her after the first rape, saying she was diseased. In some cases, the attacks are on civilians already caught in the cross-fire between warring groups. In one village near Bukavu where 27 women were raped and 18 civilians killed in May, the attackers left behind a note in broken Swahili telling the villagers that the violence would go on as long as government troops were in the area. The United Nations peacekeepers here seem to be stepping up efforts to protect women. Recently, they initiated what they call “night flashes,” in which three truckloads of peacekeepers drive into the bush and keep their headlights on all night as a signal to both civilians and armed groups that the peacekeepers are there. Sometimes, when morning comes, 3,000 villagers are curled up on the ground around them. But the problem seems bigger than the resources currently devoted to it. Panzi Hospital has 350 beds, and though a new ward is being built specifically for rape victims, the hospital sends women back to their villages before they have fully recovered because it needs space for the never-ending stream of new arrivals. Dr. Mukwege, 52, said he remembered the days when Bukavu was known for its stunning lake views and nearby national parks, like Kahuzi-Biega. “There used to be a lot of gorillas in there,” he said. “But now they’ve been replaced by much more savage beasts.”

    Dear friends. It is with sadness that I have to tell you all that Catherine’s dad passed away last Saturday morning at 0435 hrs, BST. Many thanks to you all of you who wished him well and for all your prayers and thoughts. He had a ‘good innings’ as he was 91 years old, and he was asleep and very peaceful, and not in any pain when he left us.     MWM: This long letter to humanity appeared with no apparent return address. It is being posted here and there. This is another Internet piece for which I cannot assess the validity. All I CAN say is that it sounds like a good idea, is coherent, and is written skillfully at a level of intelligence and maturity with I would associate with a serious, non-technical, matter-of-fact level of discourse. It is not ethnically loaded and the writer has a very good understanding of language and human psychology, though there are a few moments where the grammar is different than we are accustomed to and there are a couple of language errors. Most importantly, it makes no reference to impossible constructs, faux-tech, nor any type of religious or New Age buzzwords. This is as clean a straight-shooting letter, as you will find. Accordingly I am sending it to you to “vet” it and see what our Phoenix Five brain trust surmises about it. I am also sending it to you because it might be real. The main assertion in the letter is that human civilization is now in an uncontrollable free-fall implosion which cannot be “fixed” from within existing social systems. The implosion is causing, will cause a major rupture in all human orders. There is a dark road down toward the use of technology to rapidly enslave human populations in a badly degraded and unhealthy environment. Those who are defining this path, many of them unintentionally, have the greater advantage of power over resources and may gain the upper hand during the coming rupture. There are many who would take a liberating path, they could gain the upper hand if they UNDERSTAND THE CHOICE and can lose their fear, sense of isolation, and ignorance about the true state of affairs. The main proposition in the letter is that the mass appearance of ET in the skies now could help humanity clear away the veils of illusion and deceits, help settle many existential issues and dilemmas, and provide an “attractor” to help pull positive mentalities out of the social death-vortex and enable them to refocus the next stage in evolution. ET suggests that direct contact and some cultural assistance would provide the means to overcome the major blocks in human social and cultural evolution. Consent and expectation for such contact needs to be created around the world, less humans react in mass with fear and become manipulated by reactive power elites.     Pulling up my driveway I noticed a little note on my front door from the Post Office. I quickly grabbed the note, reversed out and drove down the road to collect whatever was waiting for me at the other end. I had no idea what it could be! Then, to my surprise it was the long awaited publication Compassion, Courage & Friendship! Excitedly, I carefully opened the folded cardboard and pulled out the shrink wrapped book. After removing the plastic, I pulled the book out from the dust-cover and stared at the front cover. It was stunning. What hit me first was the fantastic composition of the images, merged onto the matte print front cover, with the beautiful sweeping yellow hues. As I opened the book I smelt that sweet aroma of the fresh print. I quickly flicked through the 77 lush pages. In that quick skim, I noticed contrasting black and whites, deep poems and stories and beautiful artworks adorned by colour. I knew I was in for some great book reading. Before settling in with a nice cup of mocha, I recharged my camera and decided to share my finds ‘as I go’ with the Redbubble community. I ventured into the backyard, to soak up the last few moments of the sun hitting the foliage. As I studied the pages more closely, I noticed the 2 types of unique typography that bestowed the titles. I was really impressed by how much care had gone into the layout and crop areas. As a self-taught website/poster designer, I know how difficult this can be with multiple size and colour images. After taking multiple photos, I decided it was time to put the camera to rest and give this publication the attention it deserves, with what little sunlight I had left. Overall, this fantastic ‘coffee-table’ publication is a definite keeper. It is beautifully crafted, displays a large variety of imagery, stories and poems from many artists and will lead people back to the amazing website that compiled this compassionate, courageous and friendly piece of ‘art’. You can pick up your copy when it goes on sale this coming THURSDAY. Don’t miss out!

    These are two questions I asked myself upon discovering, and reading several passages from T.E. Lawrence’s Seven Pillars of Wisdom, an autobiographical account of the time he spent in the desert fighting the Turks. Yes, this is an account of the true “Lawrence of Arabia”. Well, as true as one would expect of a memoir written after the fact, albeit fairly soon afterwards. I am entranced with his account and amazed I had never heard of it until now. Thanks to The University of Adelaide Library and Project Gutenberg works like this can be read online or downloaded free. The catalyst was coming across the movie while channel flipping and I simply had to stop and admire the breathtaking handsomeness of a young Peter O’Toole as well as a delicious looking Omar Sharif. One particular scene, one that has always stuck in my mind, just happened to be on and I felt compelled to check on its veracity. Of course, it turned out to be true, as Lawrence recounted the event vividly in Seven Pillars of Wisdom. I think many may guess which one. For me, it is one of the most powerful scenes ever filmed. It was from this that I did some research and learned that same sex rape of prisoners by the Turks was nothing new, not in their culture, nor in history. If some of you cannot recall, Sherif Ali (Omar Sherif) is waiting outside the barracks where Lawrence (O’Toole) has been taken. He is well aware of what is happening behind closed doors. Throughout this scene, no words are spoken by the main characters, but much is said through the showing of emotion on Sharif’s face as he waits knowing there is nothing he can do. He plays the part so well, you can almost feel the pain of both men: one being beaten and raped, the other agonizing over his inaction. Later, Lawrence is thrown into the mud, discarded as nothing more than refuse. Sharif races to him, helping him up, and then helping him heal…but he never did. Lawrence lived the remainder of his life acting out the classical symptoms of those who have suffered in such a way. So how did this lead to my discovery? I wanted to know the truth behind the film. As we all know, movies based on true stories are purely that – “based” – as not much about the movie other than the premise turns out to be true. This is how I learned about Seven Pillars of Wisdom and decided to take a look for myself about what actually happened. This is also how I discovered an autobiography that not only holds my attention, but am anxious to read through. It is not a complete autobiography, just a recounting of his time as a British Officer during the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Turks. Here are a couple of excerpts that drew me in immediately: The body was too coarse to feel the utmost of our sorrows and of our joys. Therefore, we abandoned it as rubbish: we left it below us to march forward, a breathing simulacrum, on its own unaided level, subject to influences from which in normal times our instincts would have shrunk. The men were young and sturdy; and hot flesh and blood unconsciously claimed a right in them and tormented their bellies with strange longings. Our privations and dangers fanned this virile heat, in a climate as racking as can be conceived. We had no shut places to be alone in, no thick clothes to hide our nature. Man in all things lived candidly with man. and… Blood was always on our hands: we were licensed to it. Wounding and killing seemed ephemeral pains, so very brief and sore was life with us. With the sorrow of living so great, the sorrow of punishment had to be pitiless. We lived for the day and died for it. When there was reason and desire to punish we wrote our lesson with gun or whip immediately in the sullen flesh of the sufferer, and the case was beyond appeal. The desert did not afford the refined slow penalties of courts and gaols. I don’t know about you, but this is pretty powerful stuff . Also, a little trivia: From my research, the second version of this book (the first was lost) was about 400,000 words which Lawrence reportedly wrote in three months time. For us NaNo people, that equates to over 133,000 a month! I said in my last journal entry I wanted to read more. Well, I guess my wish is coming true a lot sooner than I imagined. It also shows me that some things simply cannot be planned. T.E. Lawrence nor anything he has written was ever on my radar. But this opportunity has presented itself for a reason and I am running with it. My hopes, in sharing this experience with you, is to point out that when it comes to literary things, always have an open mind and a willing attitude as you never know when you might find something wonderful to read as well as learn something new about history and a society of which you were unaware. Is there such a thing as literary archeology? Because I feel like I have dug around and found a treasure, buried beneath time, waiting for revelation and someone to appreciate it for what it has to offer. Yeah. I’m weird that way.

She did not know how she was going to make / it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It / seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose. Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and / placed each on a high fire, soon the pots came to boil. In the first she / placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she / placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil, without saying a / word. In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the / carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and / placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a / bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, “Tell me what you see.” “Carrots, eggs, and coffee,” she replied. Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did / and noted that they were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to / take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the / hard-boiled egg. Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter / smiled as she tasted its richness and savored its aroma. The daughter / then asked, “What does it mean, mother?” Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same / adversity – boiling water. Each reacted differently. The carrot went in / strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the / boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. / Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after / sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The / ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling / water, they had changed the water. “Which are you?” she asked her daughter. “When adversity knocks on your / door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?” Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with / pain and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength? Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the / heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a / financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and / stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and / tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart? Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, / the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it / releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things / are at their worst, you get even better and change the situation around you. When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest, do you / elevate yourself to another level? How do you handle adversity? Are you / a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean? May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make / you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human and enough hope to make you / happy. The happiest of people don’t necessarily have the best of everything; / they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. The / brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past; you can’t go / forward in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches.     My month with NaNoWriMo is over. I’m glad I participated, but am also as glad it’s done. I’m not sure if what I’ve written will ever be published, but I know now what it takes to go through the process of doing something more than short fiction. I have also come to realize that perhaps I will remain a short fiction writer. Putting myself through this has taught me a fair amount of respect for novel writers. Not that I had none before; it’s just that I have finally walked a 50,000 plus word mile in their shoes and have, I think, a better understanding of the challenges they face. For some perhaps, weaving a riveting work of fiction that entrances and holds a reader’s attention from chapter to chapter comes easily. It is the proofreading, editing, and publishing that are the bane of their existence. For others like me, translating an idea into something more substantial; turning it into a story with multiple characters, plots and subplots; ensuring there is clarity throughout as well as continuity; doing it all in a way that does not have you looking for the nearest donation bin instead of a favored place on your keeper shelf – well, it’s not so simple. However, I would not have traded this last month for anything. I know now that I still love writing as much as reading, and that to be a better writer I must read more; much more. At the beginning of 2008 I had high hopes of reading more than I’ve ever done and even though I failed to come even close to the number I had committed to in my chosen challenges, I still read more than I had in years. In that, I did not fail and I’m happy for it. Next year I have set more realistic goals, although one aspect remains the same – I do wish to read more next year than this year. I also wish to finish my book and do something with it. But it is being set aside to give my eyes and mind some time to uncross themselves from the stress of getting most of it down on paper (or should I say in yWriter). Not only do I want fresh eyes for that process, I also wish to have them for all the writers whose books I’ve chosen to read for my next set of personal challenges. (For more information on those, you can visit my reading blog listed on my profile page, although I haven’t added my 2009 ones just yet.) I sit here facing the fact that a new year is just around the corner and that I want it to be one where I am a better writer and an even better reader. I stare at my TBR piles and mourn the fact that they’ve only gotten larger instead of the other way around; that many of them are books I thought I would have read by now. However, I will read them: not for my own reasons, but for this one. I have plans. Yes I do. Best laid ones? Who knows. But I have them, and that is good enough for now.

    I’ve noticed lots of people doing this fifty questions thing around here lately. I also noticed that I was bored, and because of this fact I decided to mash the two things together like an ooey-gooey peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Don’t get any on your shirt. 1. Do you like blue cheese? / About as much as I like having rocks thrown at me by large groups of angry children who are mad because I won’t get off of the swing and give them a turn. (Not that that’s ever happened to me or anything…I mean, that would be just plain creepy.) 2. Have you ever smoked a cigarette? / When I was much younger (and only slightly dumber) my grade school friends and I would pick used cigarette butts off of the ground on the baseball diamond near my house and smoke what was left of them. Needless to say, I was never too anxious to light up as I got older. 3. Do you own a gun? / I do not, no. Unless you count a water-gun? I’m thinking though that the person who wrote these questions didn’t have a water-gun in mind when typing them, so my answer remains no. 4. What flavor do you add to your drink at Sonic? / I’ve only been to a Sonic once in my life and as far as I can remember, I didn’t add any flavors to my drink. Unless you count puke, which came after I was done with my burger! POW! I JUST ZINGED YA SONIC! 5. Do you get nervous before doctor appointments? / Depends on what kind of doctor. My general practitioner? No. My gynecologist? Yes. Man, you wouldn’t believe the looks I get when I show up in that office! (That was a weird joke.) 6. Do you like hot-dogs? / No I don’t, so I give them a fresh bowl of water to help them cool down. (That was a lame joke.) 7. Favorite Christmas Song? / I don’t really have one. I cry a lot at Christmas. Okay, no I don’t…I’m just fishing for sympathy. 8. What do you prefer to drink in the morning? / Mouth-wash. My wife prefers that I drink it too. I could eat pizza all day – every day, then go back in time and do it again. I know that sounds like an incredible waste of time traveling ability but it’s the truth. 11. What’s your favorite piece of jewelry? / I don’t really wear a whole lot of jewelry…out in public anyway. What I do in my private time, in the comfortable safeness of my home is my own business. Mine and Stephanies…Stephanie being me…crap…I’ve said too much. 12. Favorite hobby? / I suppose at this point “art” is no longer a hobby so I can’t really go with that. Darn, for years growing up that was my standard answer to this question, and now I’ve got nothing. Sleep? Does sleep count as a hobby? No? Okay fine! Geez, settle down! It’s not a hobby, fine!! You didn’t have to call me names just because I brought it up!! You were out of line with that…seriously…and bringing my mother into it was just plain wrong. 13. Do you work with people who idolize you? / Um…no. I could lie and say yes, but…um…no. Not at all. Not even a little. In fact pretty much the complete opposite. 14. Name a trait that you hate about yourself? / Too wordy. 16. Middle name? / Carl. It’s my father’s name. Yep a wonderful reminder of painful, failed relationships. Aint’ life grand? 17. Name 3 thoughts at this moment: / How in the world am I going to pay my mortgage this month if I don’t get some more freelance work asap? / Why am I typing a fifty question thing in my Redbubble journal instead of looking for more freelance work that would in turn keep me from being tossed out on the street? / Why was everything in Mr. Wonka’s office cut down the middle? Seriously, what was the purpose? A half of a telephone is pretty useless and a half of a water glass even more so. 18. Name 3 things you bought yesterday: / The Mona Lisa. King Tuts mummy. Brand and Angelina’s fully furnished Hollywood mansion. (I suppose this completely answers the question as to why I can’t pay my mortgage this month.) 19. I know, I know, drinking Mountain Dew is the equivalent of drinking battery acid, but I was suckered in by the “Do the Dew” campaign years ago and haven’t been able to get away from it since. DAMN YOU SLICK MARKETING CAMPAIGNS!! YOU GOT ME AGAIN! 20. Current worry right now? / Didn’t I already answer this question? I feel like I did. To answer it again would be pointless and I feel like the three people who might read this deserve better…so suck on that fifty questions! 21. Current hate right now? / How about anything and everything Jonas Brothers? That’s going to be my current hate tomorrow as well…and the day after that…and the day after that. In fact, just put them on the hate calendar for the next few years. 22. Favorite place to be? / In bed with my wife, forcing her to watch scary movies that she hates, and will no doubt give her nightmares. (Man I’m a jerk.) 23. Hey, that might make a pretty cool movie. 26. Introvert or extrovert? / Believe it or not, the word introvert was created specifically for me. As a kid I was the weird guy in the back of the room who never said a word and you thought might one day become a serial killer. As an adult I am the weird guy in the back of the room who never says a word and somehow, just barely, avoided becoming a serial killer…for now anyway. 27. What color shirt are you wearing? / Black. Like my soul. (Wow…I’m deep. Almost like a real artist?) 28. Do you like sleeping on satin sheets? / I prefer to levitate four inches above my bed while sleeping. Satin sheets are SOOO 1985! 29. Can you whistle? / Yes, but not while I work. (Another terrible joke.) 30. Favorite color(s)? / Wow, fifty questions is really a lot of questions. I mean, When I started this I intended on using it to pass some time before getting to work on more important things, but it feels like I’ve been typing this forever and there is no end in sight. If anyone made it this far in reading let me just say that I pity you, and I’m sorry. So very sorry. 31. Would you be a pirate? / Why do you ask? Are you offering? I didn’t know there were a lot of positions available in the pirating world anymore. I’m not sure I could pull it off. Would the other pirates ever be able to truly respect a crew mate with a metro-sexual faux-hawk? My guess would be no. 32. What songs do you sing in the shower? / Many songs. The entire score of the HMS Pinafore infact. And in case you were wondering tickets are available at Ticketmaster. They’re going quick so get yours right away! 33. Favorite girl’s name? / Rosario. I type this only because I have a bit of a creepy childish crush on Rosario Dawson and it infuriates my wife to no end. (Man, I like giving her nightmares AND I like to annoy her? Worst injury you’ve ever had? / When I was in sixth grade I had a bicycle accident, made kissy-face with the pavement, and got over three-hundred stitches in my forehead as a result. I’ve also had a fractured rib, many, many bruises, and more than a few good, deep cuts. That’s right, my skin pretty much looks like Frankenstein’s monster at this point. 39. Do you love where you live? / It’s not too bad. The weather is good. I’ve got no complaints. (Hey, look at that, a legitimate answer to a question that is completely and totally JOKE FREE! I NEVER THOUGHT I COULD DO IT, BUT I DID!) 40. How many TV’s are in your house? / Three. Which is sad because only one of them ever really gets used. Hey, I should sell the other two…might help me out with my mortgage problem from an earlier question. 41. What is your worst habit? / Having to finish each and every thing I start. Want proof? I should have said “forget this gobbeldygook!” about twenty questions ago, but here I am, still typing away, my fingers becoming more and more sore with each passing question. 42. How many dogs do you have? / None. Much more of a cat man. I simply can’t trust an animal that will, on occasion, eat its own feces. 43. Does someone have a crush on you? / Hopefully my wife does, because if she doesn’t then we’re very likely to have marriage problems down the line. (It would be nice if Rosario Dawson had a crush on me though.) 45. What is your favorite book? / Too many to list really. Everything from “Harold and the Purple Crayon” to “Fight Club” to “Watchmen” to “The Time Machine Did It.” (Hey, look at that…another legitimate, serious answer. Two out of forty five questions isn’t bad!) 46. What is your favorite candy? / Jelly Belly’s. I can’t get enough of those stupid things. So many flavors, so many calories, so darn tasty. Aint’ is always the case? 47. What is your favorite sports team? / I don’t really watch a whole lot of team sports. I’m much more of an individual sports sort of guy. In fact, I would almost say that I prefer something like Tennis (even though I don’t really like tennis) to something like Football. (This fact caused me an awful lot of problems growing up.) My favorite sport is most likely MMA. Two guys in a cage, punching each other in the face…it just doesn’t get much better than that, does it? 48.
