Approximately 80 Canadian Forces personnel work with the squadron full-time; 24 personnel are in the show team that travels during the show season. • An Infra-red shot of the Old Wilson Carbide Mill and a view of Parliament, Victoria Island, Ottawa, Canada / August 2008 Canon G2 +Hoya 72 IR filter, HDR -3 frames / HDR processing with Photoshop CS3 / (C) Max Buchheit, 2008 History (thanks to Anneke Dubash ): “It is the old Willson Carbide Mill. Thomas Willson built it to produce acetylene which is a by-product of calcium carbide. It actually managed to survive the Great Fire [of Ottawa] and later was used to house the RCAF photo and mapping division (during the War). Apparently, there are tenders to refurbish it but since it stands on territory claimed by the Algonquin [ first nations].... that is a contentious issue. It is used during ceremonies by the Algonquin.”

  • Evening on the coast of the Arctic Ocean in the North-West Territories of Canada. In August 1955, I was installing and operating a survey and communications camp on the vast Arctic tundra for the Royal Canadian Air Force, with a crew of 5 others. The place was an unidentified point on the Canadian Arctic coastline more or less across the water from Victoria Island. It’s claim to fame was relative position from other survey points and the flat terrain which eventually made it possible to create a crude airfield of sorts. This was in mid-August. About August 24th. we had our first snowstorm. About 4 weeks before this, the daytime temperature hit 99 degrees Fahrenheit! And untold millions of mosquitoes. / Taken with an Exakta Varex 35mm. SLR, Ektachrome film ASA 10, 50mm. Biotar lens. Exposure? Memory fails me, I think probably 1/25 sec. at F 2.0 or thereabouts. Scanned in 2004 at 4000 dpi with a Canoscan 4000US scanner.
