I’m a big fan of fables and metaphors….and somewhere in my life …I don’t remember where…or when …or from whom…I picked up this little story which has helped me soldier on through life no matter what obstacles cross my path…and now being a mother ( of two beautiful boys, 6 and 2)...I have passed this story onto my eldest…as he is at school now and is finding his own obstacles to tackle…It can be so heartbreaking as a parent to see your child in torment …but knowing that it is important for them to deal with issues in order to learn coping skills and build their character…but as a parent I can arm them with advice and guidence and support…..and it seems that this story is helping him as much as it did for me… Here is this little tale that I would like to pass on… Once there was a farmer…This farmer awoke one morning to a terrible sound….on investigating he found his donkey had fallen down the old derelict well….the farmer could see no way to get the donkey out of the well as it was very deep…the donkey bayed and bayed until the farmer could stand it no more…he considered his options and decided that the donkey was old and had enjoyed a good life and that he was going to have to fill in the old well anyway…so he decided that he would fill the well and turn it into the donkeys early grave…the farmer gathered his friends and neighbors to aid him in his gruesome chore….so, they begin to shovel dirt down the well onto the donkey …when the donkey realises his fate he begins to bay wildly…an awful spine chilling sound…the farmer and his burial troup are undeterred and continue their chore…until the farmer notices it has suddenly gone quiet…curiosity causes him to peer over the edge into the well…what he sees surprises him….each time the dirt is shovelled onto the donkey he shakes it off and steps up on it….shovel…shake…step up….until eventually the donkey jumps over the edge of the well and trots off into the paddock… Now…if you did not see it…the moral of this story is… / ...When life shovels dirt on you…Shake it off…and Step up… I Truly hope this can help you in your life as it has helped me and my Family. Warmest wishes of a healthy happy life… Care.

Over the weekend salsbells69 purchased a matted print of my photograph titled Ray Congregation – Whitsunday Islands National Park. It brings me great joy that my work can be appreciated in this way and in quoting an email from Sal: It was an image that I kept coming back too..and if it wasn’t for the detail that you saw and I saw ( the ripple) then I probably wouldn’t have taken much notice..it’s an image that conveys so much ( about the place itself, its inhabitants, what lies beneath and what beauty beholds it). You managed to capture it all in one image and you gave it life by capturing not only the rays themselves, but the movement of the ray’s tail as well..which gave it so much more dimension! Thankyou kindly Sal! And in other news I also bought a print from Travis Easton and Luka Skracic, but I’ll write another journal article when I receive them in the mail. Cain Doherty

With the kind support of the Capital Culture Fund. Made possible by the Sparkassen-Kulturfonds des Deutschen Sparkassen- und Giroverbandes. / With the support of the Bar Man Ray, Berlin. / Curators Noriko Fuku and John Jacob Media partners rbb Inforadio, rbb Kulturradio, rbb Fernsehen, H.O.M.E., Die Tageszeitung / The Man Ray: Unconcerned But Not Indifferent exhibition comprises drawings, photos, paintings and sculptures from the Man Ray Trust collection in Long Island, New York. The Man Ray Trust collection has never gone on show before. In juxtaposing Man Ray’s artistic works, tools, documents, objects and pictures which gave the artist his inspiration, the exhibition creates a distinctive setting allowing visitors to experience and enjoy his wide-ranging artistic work. The Man Ray Trust collection / After his death in 1976 Man Ray’s estate passed into the hands of his wife, Juliet, who was joined by her brothers in setting up the Man Ray Trust to preserve and promote the artist’s legacy. Part of the estate was donated to the French national museums, while the trust selected artworks, objects, documents and personal items for the American collection designed to provide a comprehensive overview of Man Ray’s creative period spanning over 60 years. The trust has so far catalogued over 2,000 works and confirmed their authenticity. However, research work into all the facets of the collection has not yet been completed. Man Ray: Unconcerned But Not Indifferent is the first exhibition to provide a comprehensive insight into the collection. The unique feature of the trust’s collection is that it encompasses items from all Man Ray’s creative periods, including little-known early works, documents from his private life, sketches for large-scale works and their documentation as well as numerous masterpieces. As was stated in an article about the trust in the magazine ArtNews in June 2002, the collection is “perfect”. The exhibition / The inscription on Man Ray’s gravestone Unconcerned But Not Indifferent was chosen as the title of the exhibition. Comprising over 300 exhibits, it is the first of its kind to relate Man Ray’s artistic works to the objects and images from which he derived his inspiration – his bowler hat and walking stick, items from the shelves of his studio in Rue de Ferou in Paris, his collection of erotic photographs and the objects he used for the camera-less photographic technique he called ‘rayography’. Profiting from the abundance of material available in the Man Ray Trust, the exhibition looks at the development of numerous motifs from sketches up to the masterpiece and shows the occasional use Man Ray made of photographic material for paintings and works of graphic art. The exhibition also gives visitors an opportunity to form a picture of Man Ray’s life and his creative processes. Among the objects on display are personal items, such as pieces of jewellery that Man Ray made for his wife Juliet, private letters, drawings and manuscripts, including two early drafts of Man Ray’s autobiography, a formula for photographic chemicals and a patent application for a magnetic chess set. Also on show are documents never exhibited before, which Man Ray used as source material for his paintings and prints, as well as proofs containing comments Man Ray made for himself and his printers. These exhibits are assigned to the finished works to which they refer, thus offering a new insight into Ray’s life and artistic work. The Unconcerned But Not Indifferent exhibition has been arranged in accordance with Man Ray’s four creative periods: New York (1890–1921), Paris (1921–1940), Los Angeles (1940–1951) and Paris (1950–1976). It begins with New York and a collection of proofs from Man Ray’s personal card files, in which he kept a record of his early works. These card files, the originals of which were stolen from Man Ray’s studio after his death and have never reappeared, were the subject of considerable controversy and have never been exhibited before. Wherever possible they are assigned to the works they document. Among the items on display from Man Ray’s years in Paris are the records of his own works and those of other artists, including Duchamp, Picasso, Miro and Leger, as well as a little book of Rousseau’s work that he produced. It was through Rousseau’s work that Man Ray learned to become a photographer, thus enabling him to gain entry to the Paris art world in the 1920s. Most of these works are likewise unknown. The exhibition contains numerous works from each of the creative periods in Man Ray’s life. Many of the works on display are well known, but have not been seen in public since his death. Thorough research in the trust’s non-catalogued stocks has made it possible for the exhibition to show for the first time a selection from the following hitherto unknown series of works: photographic plates from Les Mains Libres with traces of Man Ray’s cutting, dated 1936 and 1937 / documentary footage from France in the 1920s / a hitherto unknown document of Marcel Duchamp’s Large Glass / contact prints with traces of Man Ray’s cutting from all his creative periods, black-and-white Polaroid prints from the early 1960s / a collection of framed colour slides from the time Man Ray experimented with colour photography / a joint project by Man Ray und Max Ernst consisting of four frottages.

Stumbled across this piece of writing and liked it so much thought I’d share it here :-) ‘The storm of a robe which falls / Then a simple body without clouds / So come and tell me all your charms / You who have had your share of happiness / And who often bewails the dismal fate of the one who made you so happy / You who have no desire to reason / You who knew not how to create a man / Without loving another In the ebb and flow of a body which undresses / Akin to the breast of twilight / The eye forms in line on the neglected dunes / Where the fountains hold naked hands within their claws / Vestiges of bare forehead pale cheeks beneath the eyelashes of the horizon / A rocket-like tear betrothed to the past / To know that light was fertile / Childish swallows mistake the earth for the sky The dark room where the stones of cold are bare / Do not say you have no fear / Your look is level with my shoulder / You are too lovely to preach chastity In the dark room where even the wheat / is born of greediness Remain unmoving / And you are alone’ - By Paul Eluard

A sequence of photos taken over a 15 minute period as a new day began. Bemm River is located on the shore of Sydenham Inlet, at the eastern end of Cape Conran Coastal Park. First I’ll try set the scene for you. In March 2005 hubby & I packed our 14-year-old son and my in-laws into a hired Tarago van and set off on a roadtrip. We live on the Gold Coast, Queensland and our destination was my hometown, Colac, Victoria. We were following the coast road and had a few stops to make along the way visiting friends & family, and doing the tourist thing for the in-laws whom had never been to Victoria. We stayed in Toukley, NSW the first night and caught up with friends who lived nearby for a BBQ. After our second day on the road we arrived, after dark, at Bemm River Hotel. We’d booked into their cabins for a two-night stay while we caught up with friends, and to give the in-laws some well earned R&R time. I woke very early the next morning, excited to be back on Victorian soil for the first time in 13 years. I’d never been to Bemm River before so I decided to go for a walk and have a look around. Luderick Point Memorial Park ~ As Day Breaks / 10 minutes later, the view across Sydenham Inlet from the jetty at Bemm River as I was Waiting For The Sun / 1 minute later, Sunrays l / 1 minute later, Sunrays ll / 1 minute later, Sunrays lll / While everyone else was sleeping, I had sat on a jetty watching the most spectacular sunrise I’d ever seen.
