Mt. Edgecumbe, a small volcano off the coast of Sitka Alaska is rarely visible and certainly in my 20 years of traveling up there I have never once seen the sun set over Edgecumbe like this. Truly inspiring light!

This is a photo of my wife’s silouette taken during our last vacation (road trip) in the US which in this case is in Death Valley. We had just arrived at the first view point to enjoy a pretty spectaculor view and my wife sat down on the beach and well, there you have it. /

Capt. John Davis and Bombardier Lt. Carl Thompson are walking passed their bird to meet the rest of the boys for a few beers. Both can faintly hear music and laughter of men spilling from a tent near the end of the runway. Davis looks back into the setting sun, listens to the big radial engines still ticking from an earlier test flight. The distinct smell of burnt oil still lingers in the air. / “God I love that smell” he thinks to himself. / He gazes down upon the puddles of oil underneath the port and starboard engines. / “Hey, does it look like engine one is leaking more than usual?” John asks, turning to Carl who had his half smoked cigarette in the corner of his mouth. / “It’s been leaking more since Frankfurt”, Carl replies. / “Frankfurt? Yeah, I think you’re right”. Davis can still hear the screams of the waistgunner, when the shrapnel tore through the entire port side. / “Poor Sammy, he never had a chance”, Davis says. / Carl didn’t reply, just walked quietly next to John, the setting sun throwing long shadows onto the tarmac, making them both look like giants. / Both men knew that tonight they indeed feel larger than life, because there is no mission tonight. What do you call the light that permanently imprints itself into the deepest corner of your cerebral real estate? Just a memorable one, divine, sublime? The star was going down fast, as it was just a matter of ‘to get it over and done with‘ a daily sunset routine – until that moment. Like it was switched on by some all powerful hand residing somewhere in the center of a kingdom of light, the sunbeam reached across the valley, bringing all the associated attributes with it, like joy and warmth, just for a few moments, before disappearing altogether. The blue cold haze drowned the beautiful Hawkes Bay valley, but not before the last ray of sun got there first. I was standing in awe … for a while in fact, still in disbelief. Review button and LCD screen confirmed it did happen. Sweet. I’ll treasure selfishly the melody of breeze passing through the treetops, the smell of golden grass and feel of fallen leafs under my feet. Not to worry, I left something to share with you. Here it is.

Here’s my oldest boy paddling out just like me to watch the sunset after a very hot summer’s day. And yes, here I’m also in the water after him with the camera! / It’s similar to ‘My sunset’ but I wanted to share this one also :o) Nikon D200 / 18-200mm lens / processed in RAW with only the contrast and colour slightly upped, the rest is all real! No photoshop as I have already been asked.

Taken on Saturday evening, February 7th, near Geelong after a day of record-breaking temperatures (47.6 C or 118 F) and, tragically, the worst bushfires in our state’s history with towns virtually wiped out, hundreds of homes lost and, as I write, a death toll of 28 which is expected to rise when rescuers enter areas which were unreachable during the firestorm. I felt voyeuristic and very sad capturing this brilliant sunset caused by so much disaster just a hundred or so kilometres away. I only hope that those who are missing are found alive and that those who have suffered tragedy will somehow find the strength to rebuild their lives. A testament to my elderly parents who lost their home and everything they owned in the 1983 Ash Wednesday bushfires and a tribute to their resilience in starting again.

I kept returning to this spot, night after night, sometimes it was raining or misty and other nights were simply ideal though a tad chilly … This spectacular natural rock arch, sculpted by weathering and erosion from the sea over thousands of years is well worth visiting. Here you can also observe a colony of New Zealand Fur-seals as they feed, swim and laze on the shore platform below. If you cannot see them you can sure smell them ! Rota Island is a natural playground with around 3000 inhabitants and is known by many to be Micronesia’s best-kept secret / Rota (Chamoru: Luta) also known as the “peaceful island”, is the southernmost island of the United States Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) and the second southernmost of the Marianas Archipelago. It lies approximately 40 miles north-northeast of the United States territory of Guam. Songsong village is the largest and most populated followed by Sinapalo village (Sinapalu). In 1521, the first European to see Rota, was the lookout on Magellan’s ship Victoria, Lope Navarro. However, Magellan’s Armada of three ships didn’t stop until they reached Guam, so the first European to arrive in Rota (in 1524), was Spanish navigator Juan Sebastian Elcano, who annexed it together with the rest of the Marianas Archipelago on behalf of the Crown of Spain.
