Many of you have been following my saga of plans to step out of the stone ages and get internet at home (instead of just having access at work). It has been a much longer and involved process than I ever would have thought, but I am extremely excited to inform you that I am typing this from my home computer! Yipee!!!!!!! Perhaps now I can start to get caught up on my pictures. Then again, I still haven’t been able to get the RAW file viewer downloaded…..the battle isn’t over yet, but hey, I’m much further today than I was yesterday! : )

I put some extra RAM on my laptop which I use for processing, and photo storage – when I got it home, I turned it on…and it crashed bigtime. / Sent to repairers, and they have sent it back with NOTHING on …no Lightroom full of unprocessed work, none of my RAW files …nothing. / There is a backup folder…which is empty. Some of my work is backed up…but I’ve had so much trouble with it freezing constantly (hence the need for the RAM) I hadn’t done hardly anything with it for a while…just put photos on to process when it was working better. I could cry.

So kids what are you using? Personally I shoot in raw format for everything I do. Can’t seem to bring myself to through away data having the camera compress the image. I am curious and need some feedback for my next module in school…

I've Been Tested!

Aren’t we all at some time or other? To pick up from my last entry. The pond and remaining fish are ok now but no fresh spawnings yet. The holiday on the Tweed was fun but hardly a rest as the ribs still gave me hell and the ear infection that has plagued me on and off for nearly 6 months flared up again and the antibiotics played hell with my “routine”...........if you know what I mean? Returning from the holiday I was reminded that I hadn’t got round to sorting out my crashed computer properly and it crashed again! A complete re-format got me up and running but I had to chase up all the serial numbers for the lost programmes as I hadn’t kept copies outside of the computer…........something that I have now rectified. School holidays and certain issues on the domestic front conspired to prevent me from visiting RB for 3 weeks so please forgive me if I haven’t responded to you, or commented on your work but I just haven’t had the time. A pleasant surprise on my return was to see that I had sold a laminated print to an unknown buyer : and also a card, “Castle Sinclaire Girnigoe” to Kristina K (Thank you Kristina) It now seems that I will, over a period of time, have to take down most of my work and re-submit. Nearly all the images that I have at RB and a stock library, no longer remain in my possession since the computer crash. I have all the RAW files but no processed copies identical to those that RB holds. I don’t feel comfortable selling work that I cannot exactly duplicate. It would be near impossible to process the Raw files exactly as I processed those that RB hold so I will re-process and re-submit, so if, over the next few months, you see pics uploaded that are familiar, you will know the reason….............please feel free to comment again if you so wish…..........who knows?.............the re-processed pics may even look better :-) I still have a few health issues but I hope to be back to full steam over the next couple of weeks and may even get round to processing the few pics that I took whilst on holiday. I’ve missed you all…..........thanks for listening kev

I have been using Lightroom 2 for the past week or so and I must say, I’m finding it really good to use. Not being experienced with any other software for processing RAW images, (other than the Canon software that came with the camera), I find Lightroom is eliminating any tweeking that I would have done in Photoshop. I also find the database side of this software, so helpful in cataloguing my images. Is anyone else out there using it also? Let me know what you think. I’d love to hear from you.

I took a few pics in raw format last week (well, PEF, the Pentax equivalent) but could not open them up with PhotoImpact. So I thought it would be a good time to upgrade it (it was version 4!), assuming it was a version thing. The website said version 12 would recognise PEF files. Paid my cash, downloaded the software and installed it … and it still would not open the PEF files. Discovered after a lot of googling that there was a patch available (http://www.ulead.com/tech/pi/pi_ftp.htm) – applied it and Hurrah, PEFs open up wonderfully. Its a shame that the product didn’t work first time but I gather other graphics packages have similar bugs.

Do you shoot in RAW cos you are not a good photographer?

I was thinking the main reason I shoot in raw is to make HDR photos but to a lesser reason it is to let me `fix` my photos later in photoshop…... About 1 year ago i was shooting in raw more and more so i can `fix` my photos. / So now as a rule i shoot in JPG unless I really dont want to mess up my photo like a wonderful sunset In a part of australia which is hard to get too. this makes me pay attention more to the photos that i,m taking at the time and teachers my to learn how my camera works better. As i have just found out that with stronger telly lens i need to stop my camera down about .7 stops to get a nice rich photos and push my satuation to `more colour` / and i know when i get my new dream camera the mighty D300 I will have to relearn again. But for me that part of the fun in a way . Playing with new toys. Do you shoot in RAW cos your not as good as you hope to be like me?

Re-read the chapter in PhotoShop for dummies about the good reasons to use RAW format. The only things I don’t like about using RAW, is that they do take longer to save, meaning ‘action shots’ aren’t a viable option, and you get fewer photographs saved to the SD card. I guess that means I will have to stock up on SD cards. ;) So, I worked with the RAW format photographs. And I have to say, once I got over my nervousness and trepidation, I found I had more control and more options. i do so love learning new things. :)

I decided to give it a whirl, and was rather surprised at how good it was. It loads quite a bit faster than PhotoShop, and has features that rival PhotoShop. I wanted to try it for one reason… “Purple Fringe removal” tool. In outdoor back lit subjects, I have had issues with that purple ‘halo’, and in one easy step, it was removed. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked. It also can handle RAW format, which is a huge bonus. Now, if I could get PhotoShop to breed with PaintShop, I would be able to use just one program. chuckle

Camera RAW / Editor and Compression

Shooting in RAW definitely has it’s advantages both technically and creatively. Technically – image quality is paramount the dynamic range surpasses JPEG. / Compression – using RAW is uncompressed. This means in post-production you are getting the highest possible quality with your shots. Every time you save a jpeg, the file is recompressed. Each compression degrades quality. The colour /detail range – to show detail in shadows is there if the shot is taken correctly and can often be fixed / retrieved in most cases. For example under / over exposed. However if the information just isn’t – it cannot be retrieved. If you are unable to shoot in RAW as most compact digitals can’t, shoot in jpeg and if you want the best quality either cash-up and buy a DLSR or save the shots in Photoshop as PSDs. However PSDs are large files and will clog up HDD space, esp if you don’t have much. When post processing in Photoshop, make sure you have the latest RAW Plug-in if you can’t get it, download the DNG Converter from Adobe’s website. As the newer cameras will more than likely not be supported in older versions of Photoshop, Lightroom or Elements. Creatively – there are a lot effects you can get just from using the RAW Editor. Using the channel mixers, vignetting, saturation, tint, temperature, shadow, exposure. / Effects such as black and whites, 70s wash, although I haven’t done a sepia – I’m sure it’s possible. If you want to do more, save the file as a PSD, not JPEG. Maintain the maximum image quality as compressing the file will deteriorate the quality, esp enlargement prints. Noise grain can be artistic it can also look really bad, too. Esp from low light shots taken with high ISO (although not a problem with higher end gear). Even with the flash, my experience is that most older DSLR Cameras are noisy and so do Compact Digitals – this may not become problem as technology develops. There are so many different effects you can get from experimenting – faking it. Polaroid, TTV (Through The Viewfinder), aged, warping, softening, montages, etc. Once you have your PSD, experiment with textures, blending modes and limited filters. As I don’t personally use a lot of them – ‘cheap’ and easy effects that are either over-used or used too much or too badly. BOO. I use levels, lots of overlays – including the same image in different colour sets and textures (from CG Textures , blurring, blending modes, paint brushes, saturation levels (can be done in the RAW Editor). Experiment. So if you’ve got the space (HDD and Memory Cards) shoot in RAW, much better long-term and better image quality. Different manufacturers have their own branded RAW. Adobe have DNG (Digital Negative) which works the same as a RAW image in the RAW editor. I personally convert my CR2 files from my Canon DSLR to DNG as Photoshop CS2 does not support them. CS3 however does. This is because Adobe only update the RAW Editor to a certain point /series of camera – so convert or upgrade, you decide which is better for your situation. RAW files are larger than jpegs, so you need sufficient space to store them, esp if you’re doing a lot of shooting – weddings, events, etc. Workflow speeds are dependant on hardware. External drives – transport BUS – Firewire 800 vs USB 2.0 vs Esata, Optical. RAM, Internal HDDs, CPU clock speeds, multiple CPUs, Video Card, Screen – on screen colour reproduction accuracy with prints -this is also affected by lighting in work environment. For any further questions about this topic, email me: damienwoods84@yahoo.com.au and I’ll get back to you ASAP.

Raw Attraction

Survival is a word that has so many interpretations for so many people. Depending on which country you live in, your financial state and well being, surviving everyday life is very personal. And in western society sometimes our way of surviving could be deemed as superficial or unnecessary comfort. / So why do we get out of bed in the morning? What keeps us interested in life? With all the atrocities occurring in the world some people take refuge in consumerism and escapism. Things like shopping, cars and the entertainment industry etc help us get-by and survive. / I myself am guilty, because I like wrestling – the WWE kind. And when telling someone I’m a wrestling fan they usually ask the question again out of utter shock, just to make sure they heard right the first time. I guess this is because I don’t look-like a stereotypical wrestling fan, on the flip-side I am female and I have a brain! / ‘You like wrestling?’ ‘Yeah, I love it!’ And that’s when the interrogation begins. All the answers are easy: I follow World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), which was formerly known as World Wrestling Federation (WWF). My all-time favourite wrestlers are Jeff Hardy, Rey Mysterio, Eddie Guerrero, Billy Kidman and Chris Benoit. In every match these guys keep the audience and fans guessing about what they’ll do next with their lightening fast speed and athleticism. / I watch WWE’s two main programs ‘Raw’ and ‘Smackdown’ every week and get to see the ‘Mainevents’ on subscription television once a month. For a hefty $200 each, my sister and I saw ‘Raw’ at Rod Laver Arena when they brought their show to Australia in 2003. But it’s when they get to the big question ‘Why do you like wrestling?’ I always seem to fumble with my words. I began watching WWE around the age of 15, but not by choice. My little sister was still in primary school when wrestling was all the craze in her grade. She soon got my mum hooked on watching wrestling and the two of them became addicted to the week in, week out antics. My dad and I were disgusted. The ridiculous story lines, bad hair and outrageous wardrobe choices was all a part of a show that went on for two hours too long. / Then something happened, something unexpected. I started paying attention, liking wrestlers and hating others. I felt excited when a ‘good guys’ music started up and he would come running down the ramp and into the ring. I began wishing wrestling nights came around sooner. The WWE was a cheesy part of my life, but I was hooked and I didn’t even see it coming. When friends came over they couldn’t understand our fascination with the TV screen. Neither could Dad. He was now alone in his crusade to banish wrestling from the house as it was all we women talked about. Six years on he still doesn’t see the attraction. / Wrestling is very much like any other sport – you either like it or you don’t. If you’re not a fan, it’s hard to understand the appeal of two men wrestling one another. But I love the heroes and villains, the music and suspense, the physical and athletic demands and the death-defying stunts – all done to entertain and win their crowd’s respect (and to earn their million dollar pay checks). For me there’s no bigger adrenaline rush than a huge roar from the stadium at a wrestling event and having the fans booing, yelling and screaming, at what they are witnessing before them. / Sure it’s fake – they’ve already determined the winner before the match, and they’re playing characters, but the moves still hurt, the pain is still real and the fans devotion to their idols is everlasting (or until they turn bad). That is why I love wrestling, because in a small way, it’s what keeps me interested, both for real reasons and for satire reasons. / Looking back, wrestling is the one thing that tied my sister and I together as friends. Having a five-year age difference, it’s hard to find common ground, but wrestling provided a shared love and interest for us when we were younger, that still remains to this day. / So when I fumble at the question, ‘Why do you like wrestling?’ It’s not because I don’t know what to say, but rather, where to begin! A small piece of mindless entertainment can ultimately provide a lot. By Laura Mullins
