PRETTY & SMART – Detail from an oil self-portrait on board, by Albrecht Durer. / A German painter, engraver and mathematician. Famous for his print series: / Apocalypse / Passion of Christ / Knight, Death, & the Devil / Melencolia / Four Horsement of the Apocalypse / The Rhinoceros. Third child in a family of eighteen children, of Hungarian father, German mother. Traveler and student, goldsmith, Durer became the most successful publisher in Germany and abroad, owning 24 printing presses at one time, incredibly famous in his early twenties. Painter, watercolorist, etcher, woodblock print maker. / He published the “Nuremberg Chronicle” in1493 with over 1800 woodcut illustrations. He didn’t think painting could earn him enough money (still true five hundred years later), and turned to printing. / Scholar, intelectual, and successful businessman, his engravings and prints affected the giants who came after him: Raphael, Titian, and Rembrandt.

An illustration of my old OC Raphael and his water summon, Halvar. This was done as an assignment for my digital art class a term ago. If I recall correctly, in the world he’s from, he happens to be one of the chosen people who are able to summon the sleeping gods/majestic creatures and shares a close bond with them. XD; It’s been a long time so I don’t remember much about the story I made up for him.

/ The Archangel Raphael was depicted as an angel of healing in religious text. / I interpret this image as a combination between the good and bad, indecisiveness pertaining to religion being real or not. TO TAKE THE PISS / To take the piss is a British slang expression meaning to mock, tease, ridicule or scoff. Take the mickey (or variations) are euphemistic ways of conveying this expression where the word “piss” may be vulgar. / The term sometimes refers to a form of mockery or a piss take in which the mocker exaggerates the other person’s characteristics; pretending to take on his or her attitudes, etc., in order to make them look funny. / The phrase is in common usage throughout English society, employed by headline writers in broadsheet gazettes and tabloids as well as colloquially and is also used in English speaking countries such as Australia. Winner of the Angelic Challenge in First Things Group and Peace, Love and Tranquility – Angel Challenge Archangel of the Element of Air, and head of the Guardian angels, Raphael is painted in his traditional sky blue and golden hues. I adore adoring the archangels, and on great days I see that they adore adoring God. So I painted this one in his appreciation of the Light. Oil on Canvas – 90cmx120cm – Sold – commissioned by Aelin and Sam as a partner painting for “Seraphim”. Many thanks to the handsome man who modeled for me!
