MANY THANKS for your votes, placing this photo as the winner in the Film Photography “People” Challenge in October 2009, and I’m honoured to be featured by the Film Photography Group as well! This photo is of a British Railways Train Guard with his tobacco pipe, checking the railway platform from his Guard’s Van window. Taken in September 1972 on Ilford FP4 film, in my ergonomically all-time favourite camera, my Asahi Pentax S1a with a Takumar F/2.8 lens. Sadly there are still a number of “old film” artifacts evident in the picture in spite of many hours of careful recovery in Photoshop! This explains why I’ve limited the choice of printed medium to cards and canvas. After some additional research by my son, I’m now sure that the railway station is Crewe Station (Lancashire), and that the train is one belonging to London Midland Scottish (LMS), not London Midland Region (LMR) as I’d entered into the photo’s IPTC Caption field. Here’s a close-up of the Guardsman’s badge (or ‘button’), which (provided that it isn’t just a blood-donor’s badge or similar!) might help some UK railway enthusiast discover a bit more about this chap, and the railway network that he worked on. / / This is a 100% crop from the film-scan, with some minor contrast adjustments and with no digital noise reduction. / .

Every Sunday a steam train makes it way down from Bristol to Kingswear filled with steam enthusiasts, mainly on the main Paddington to Penzance line. Quite exciting to see it pass Dawlish at about 40MPH with the whistle blowing and people cheering it on it’s way along the scenic coastal section of the trip.

The East Lancashire Railway is a heritage railway in Lancashire and Greater Manchester, England.The line opened in 1987 operating a service from Bury to Ramsbottom via Summerseat. In 1991 the service was extended via Irwell Vale to Rawtenstall, and in September 2003 an eastbound extension from Bury to Heywood was opened. To reach Heywood, the line climbs a gradient of 1 in 36, and falling at a gradient of 1 in 41, to cross over the Manchester Metrolink line into Bury. The heritage line is now just over 12 miles (19 km) long, and has a mainline connection with the national railway network at Castleton, beyond Heywood. There are plans to extend the running line further to Castleton in the future. Originally uploaded in March ‘08, this was a capture of the storm that hit SW England that same month. / This was taken from the bridge at Dawlish Railway Station, Devon, England. / Despite the rough weather, the trains continued to run, and this stretch of track is the most expensive to maintain, due to the battering it gets from the sea. / This is a common sight in Dawlish during the winter months, and sometimes during the Summer months also. This picture was originally tonemapped by Dave Warren and I have revamped it a little bit to give it a slightly different look. Thanks again to Dave for his help with this.
