A station that time has mostly forgotten all about stands waiting for a time that may never come. These old buildings and rails remember an era where hundreds of happy faces passed through here on their way home or on their holidays: They dream of a time long since passed. The Summer sky presents its amber glow to the station and casts its pigment all over the scene, highlighting the old charm of the woodwork and enhancing the shaddows. There is a romantic stillness captured within this scene. It is easy for us to imagine a crowd of people gathered waiting on a station that looks imaculate and yet, we can also see that this truly is the End of the Line. The road to California is supposed to be paved with Gold. But these days the road to California is paved with poppies and lots of them. Even the railroad tracks are paved with poppies. This has been an amazing Spring for wild flowers here in the Northern part of California. Taken near Wheatland in Northern California with a Canon Rebel XSi with a 55-250mm lens. Yes these tracks are periodically used so I was lucky to get the shots that I did.
walking into the rising sun
In a dream I walked along a deserted railway line feeling the gravel and beams under my feet and enjoying the sweet smell of poppies all around me. A lone buck stood off in the field beyond the willow trees grazing on the fresh sprouts of grass that arose after a spring rain. The sound of a babbling brook drew my attention to the gathering of ducks searching for food in the grass along the water’s edge. Geese honked as they flew overhead headed for the flooded rice fields I had walked past earlier. In the distance I noticed a gathering of storm clouds and the distinct shimmer of a rainbow as it started to form over a distant lush green valley. I sat down on the tracks enjoying the sunshine that I knew would soon come to an end as the storm came my way. There was a feeling of freedom and happiness that I never wished to end. The sound of my alarm brought me back to the real world. It was time to face another dreary day. As I stepped out of the house geese honked drawing my attention as they changed into a unique double X formation on their way to the nearby rice fields. I could hear the sound of a train as it passed through the middle of town and see a double rainbow as it started to form over a nearby valley. Suddenly, I had the feeling that this was going to be a very good and unusual day after all. ...And the CP (Canadian Pacific) takes it by a nose with the CN (Canadian National) chugging alongside. I live in a little mountain town where the trains stop for a few minutes and crews do a changeover then stay in the bunkhouses on either side of the river for a few hours to rest up for their next trips. / These freight trains are heading west towards Vancouver. /
(Two photos to make one) The railroad tracks are from my long drive to Petoskey every day. They run right along the high way. I took some pictures of them and they looked a little bla. So I got to thinking…... Today I took some photos of my son in the back yard. I wanted to make some kind of a vintage traveler photo. This is what I came up with…..

Old unused railway express office an station
The New York Central Railroad (reporting mark NYC), known simply as the New York Central in its publicity, was a railroad operating in the Northeastern United States. Headquartered in New York, the railroad served most of the Northeast, including extensive trackage in the states of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Massachusetts, plus additional trackage in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec. Its primary connections included Chicago and Boston. The NYC’s Grand Central Terminal in New York City is one of its best known extant landmarks. In 1968 the NYC merged with its former rival, the Pennsylvania Railroad, to form Penn Central (the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad joined in 1969). That company soon went bankrupt and was taken over by the federal government and merged into Conrail in 1976. Conrail was broken up in 1998, and portions of its system was transferred to the newly-formed New York Central Lines LLC, a subsidiary leased to, and eventually absorbed by CSX. That company’s lines included the original New York Central main line, but outside that area it included lines that were never part of the NYC system.
