The Race Track in Death Valley. This is a place you have to experience in person.
This is the same picture, just bigger. ;) I will add though, this is probably one of my first to what I consider my amateur photography shots. This is were I stopped taking “touristy” pictures and started looking at things in a different angle. I started looking at the unseen beauty of things and tried to capture them.

Sunset at the abandoned Catalina Racetrack, Blue Mountains, NSW Australia.
Featured in “National Parks of the World” – June 2009. Featured in “Rocks and Stones” – November 2009. Here in one of the hottest places on earth, large rocks appear to race one another around a dry lake bed leaving long trails behind them and small piles of dried mud in front of them. No one has seen them move but the evidence shows that they do…somehow. The practical theory is that the combination of seasonal heavy rains and very high speed winds can push these rocks, sometimes weighing as much as the average person, across the slippery muddy surface of the usually dry lake. On cold winter nights, sheets of ice probably also contribute to the movement of these “sailing stones.” [Wikipedia entry – Racetrack Playa] [U.S. National Park Service website] / Copyright © 2004 Brian W. The “Racetrack” area of Death valley National Park is the scene to a natural phenomena that no man has ever witnessed. Large rocks, explusion from the eruption of nearby Uherbe Crater, seemingly have moved across the desert playa floor. As eveident by these deep tracks it’s obvious this rock has moved, it about 70 lbs solid rock. Speculation is that arare rains, once every decade soak the playa, then scirocco winds then push the rocks along as the silt gets slippery. It’s a 25+ mile down a dirt gravel road that’s a really rough drive. 4wd are recommended and high clearance vehicles only. It was 120 f that day, blistering hot. We camped at Teakettle Junction, a fork in the gravel “road” and had an unbeleivable night, bats in our faces, millions of stars, coyotes and a jet boil “sue bee” chicken dumpling and peas dinner. It was a must do bucket lisI’m definitely going back… with real gear!!!
This photo was taken at the Racetrack Playa in Death Valley, California. Unfortunatly when we got there thick storm clouds moved in and so we missed the chance for a nice sunset. No one what makes these rocks drift across the lake bed leaving long trails, but whatever the reason, this was one of the most interesting places we visited in the park. It took about 90 mins to drive here over rough roads (park rangers recommended 4wd only but when we got there we met another tourist who had made it in his tiny 2wd rental car, in a much faster time than us).

The rocks on this ancient lake bed move. The moving rocks are something of a mystery. Scientists theroize that when the lake bed gets wet, it becomes so slippery that the winds can move rocks weighing 100 pounds or more. Others suggest that wind moves the rocks only when ice helps raft them along a temporary lake surface. The tilt was intentional. / Canon EOS 40D 18-55mm lens

Loved how I caught the jockey biting his lip. For anyone who knows me, you know I do that while riding, too. Bad habits die hard. Once I managed to bite down over a jump on my old pony in a riding lesson and I nearly bit through my tongue! I am passionate about all horses, but have always had a dream to own and train my own racehorses someday. It probably won’t happen until I retire, if it does happen, but that’s the fun thing about dreams… you can have them even if they aren’t likely to happen. Although, I have been trying to get a plan together for getting friends together after college graduation to go in and buy a share of a racehorse with my boyfriend and I… so maybe it’ll happen sooner than I think :0) Thanks for your views and comments friends! My first attempt at horse racing photography. Enjoy! ♥ Louisville, Kentucky
