i donated blood again 2 weeks ago, have haemochromotosis and the treament is regular blood letting which is good for everyone. Only bummer is that it exhausts me and i ALWAYS try to beat it. Did it on a Wednesday after a 2 hour cycle session, then followed it up with a 4 hour ride on the Saturday morning which left me wobbling home for the last hour! Since then have let up on the hard training hoping to pick up energy levels again. / Yesterday, woke up feeling shattered and picked up my friends, Richard and Jonathon (brilliant 100km runners) & drove up to Mona Vale to particpate in an orienteering race. It goes for 6 hours and you try to get as many points as you can and the highest point score wins. It’s a test of map reading and endurance. / I told my partner Joel(a great 100 mile runner and orienteerer-exceptional) i felt very ordinary and suggested he run with the fast boys & I’d run with his lovely wife and her friend but he said “nope” and we’d take it easy, stop for a coffee or swim if needed! / It was a stunning day and we had an hour & a half to plot a course before setting off at 9:30am. It started at Mona Vale and we headed up into the hills, hitting bush tracks and working our way down to Narrabeen lakes, then up the coast, zig-zagging inland to pick up eatra checkpoints. The highest scoring points are often the most difficult ie:up big hills/far away and that’s what you try to aim to pick up the most of. / We only made it up to the headland above Bilgola and Newport then weaving back to the Pittwater and back to the finish line at 3:30 spot on. / You never know how you’re faring as it’s only when you add up your scoresheet and hand it in for comparison that you get to know how you’ve done. / Over the 6 hours, we covered 50km’s, ate every hour while you’re running, something i’m not great at, i tend to do it while going uphill as that’s the only time we’ll slow to a walk and i’ll grab a snack out of the camelpack and gag, try to breathe, eat and swallow! I carry extra electrolyte powder so when you refill the packs you add your salty sugary stuff. I’ve done these races with Joel before where I’ve not consumed enough food and drink and at 48km’s have suffered excrutiating cramps that render you incapable of doing anything, so this time i got it right. Joel’s patiently taught me this. / Anyhow, we ended up to our amazment and delight, winning outright…then we realise we’ve won the mixed teams, master’s etc. COOL! / I saw so many beutiful views yesterday that i’ll have to try and paint some. These races take you places you never would normally see or find out about. I saw the most stunning waterfall and nature walk that i had no idea existed…will have to go and find it again and take my kids on their bikes. Today i’ve just finished a month’s work on Apres Velo Summer 08/09. Did some pretty hard core B&W mountain bike type graphics which i’ll put up once my tee ranges are out. Had my embroidery machine running non stop doing Doily Couture logos on little love heart shaped pockets for boxer shorts for next summer’s sleepwear samples. I’ll try to get some more paintings done for the galleries and also to have new imagery for products like placemats and prints. Then i have Winter 09 Doily Couture to draw and sample up on my new-old industrail; sewing machines. April i’m doing another adventure race (only a short one) up at Lake Macquarie and then in May Dirtworks Mountain Bike Race, things to look forward to! Then come June….another lot of blood out.

It was the first time I went to such an event: Yesterday, I was in Le Mans (France) and I had the pleasure to spend a few hours around the race track during the qualification runs. Two images uploaded after that. You can judge by yourself. But it was quite interesting to try and catch cars racing at speed that go well over 300km/h (you need to choose well your photo spot to avoid that danger for the photographer) and to take advantage of the many colors and shiny cars that are splatered all over the place.

    by Stefan Trenker

Last saturday the Kraftwerktrophy 2009 was staged in Vienna – a 12h bicycle race for solo riders and 3-man teams. My personal goal was to hit the 300km mark which i reached – I cycled 325km. actually i could have cycled more, but after 240km I became a bit lazy… The event itself was amazing – perfectly organized, perfect weather, not too hot, sun all day but a bit too much wind. With Jure Robic (4 times Race Across America winner), probably the best Ultra-Cyclist in the world at the moment, the event also had a very prominent starter and a well deserved winner. / Jure, who took the Kraftwerktrophy as a good training unit for the RAAM which is starting in 3 weeks, cycled some amazing 498km and was oly beat by a 3-man team, which cycled 504km, one round more than Jure. / all other teams, and of course solo starters, finished behind Jure Robic – simply amazing… For me personally, the race started pretty badly – I went to the start-line and saw that my rear tyre was punctured. not a good start with 5minutes to the actual start. / so i went to the official race mechanic, and Robert (thanks again, even though you won’t read it here), fixed my tyre in an astounding sub-4-minutes. / the start flag was just lifted when I jumped over the fences and hit the road with only 200m behind the big peleton. the rest of the race went pretty well – the first 240km were amazingly easy and i was very positive on going more than 300km. then, however, i started to get cramps in my left leg and i had to take it a bit easy. another problem was that i was there alone, so i dind’t have anybody to hand my fresh water bottles or anything to eat. / so i had to get off the bike myself, which also meant that i was losing the group i was cycling in… with 75 minutes still to go, i had cycled 293km and i knew that the 300km wouldn’t be a problem. at the finish line my odometer showed 327,8km, the official report states 324,8km. it was a fantastic weekend and a perfect event – looking forward to my next 12h race in 2 1/2 weeks, this time in Salzburg on the Salzburgring.

I have been asked to take photo’s at the Scott 24hr Race this weekend. / Our company has a team taking part and would like some photo’s of the event. It will be my first photography job and unpaid, but that doesnt worry me. I have to start somewhere and the exposure will be fantastic. If I can nail this then I will be able to apply for other event or sports photography and get into something different than nature and animals. Quite looking forward to it, hope the weather is nice. But if not then I will get some seriously awesome muddy stacking it shots! I will be heading out Saturday morning and take shots at the starting line, team photo’s, croud foto’s and then move down the track and get some shots as they race past. Then I will return on Sunday and take shots of the finish line. Very different ball game to taking still photo’s but so looking forward to trying something new! I was also thinking that if my photo’s of this event looks great then I will be asking them if I can be the in-house photographer. They spend thousands on photographers each year and if I can do it for them for half the price then I’m in for the win! Fingers crossed!
