  • Noyes Cultural Art Center First and Second Floor Galleries January 23 though March 12, 2009 Sapphire and Crystals: BEyONd Race and Gender Curated by artist and Chicago State University art professor, Joyce Owens Opening Artist Reception: Sunday, January 25, 3:00-5:00 PM at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center A regular component of the exhibition is the “self portrait” silent auction, which will take place at the Artist Reception on January 25. All bids open at $125.00. Another feature is a collaborative altar/installation produced on site. Refreshments will be served and the Walter Clark Trio will perform. This exhibition features 23 African American professional women artists. The theme, BEyONd Race and Gender, addresses issues that have been especially central in electing America’s new president and vice president. It features the artists’ exploration of the current state of race and gender, and our expectations and hopes for the future. The Sapphire and Crystals exhibition has a 20-plus year history of showing and mentoring promising and established professional women artists throughout Chicago and beyond. Participating artists are Rose Blouin, Dorothy Carter, Arlene Turner Crawford, Makeba Kedem DuBose, Juarez Hawkins, Candace Hunter, Renee Williams Jefferson, Marva Pitchford Jolly, Nicole Malcolm, Joyce Owens, Frances Callaway Parks, Felicia Grant Preston, Joanne Scott, Janet Sheard, Patricia Stewart, Michelle Stutts, Shirley J.Sullivan, Dorian Sylvain, Pearlie Taylor, Anna M.Tyler, Shahar Caren Weaver, Rhonda Wheatley and Shyvette Williams. Makeba’s Artist Statement: My new series, The Service Series, speaks to viewers of acceptance and change, of gathering for the purpose of oneness on a very literal level, and including public service in our way of thinking again. The images that I have selected to exhibit in the “Sapphire and Crystals: BeyONd Race and Gender” exhibition are in the style and format of work that I regularly produce. They speak to viewers on the importance of coming together, of “Gathering,” of going beyond for the purpose of becoming one in our way of thinking. At this juncture, in order to procure the change we would like to see in this country, it is imperative that we embrace this mind-set now, during the term of service of Barack Obama, who exemplifies this way of thinking. We all need to assist the world in going BeyONd where we are, in order to reach where we, as one, need to aspire to be.

  • ( Originally drawn on the 20th July 2006. ) Scene from Chapter 7 – ( Max or Dick? Which would YOU pick? ) from ‘Wacky Races 2004’. (Everything is in place, minus the beer glass. xD He must have gotten fed up of it. ;) ) —-—-—-—-—-—- Dick was still sat at the bar nursing the same beer glass he had been nursing for the past hour or so. / His head was slumped on the bar and he had tears in his eyes, partly due to depression and partly due to anxiety. / His stomach was churning with nervousness. The bartender, while drying a beer glass with his towel, raised his eyebrows. / “Are you done hatchin’ that thare glass? Or are you gonna move on to another one any time soon?” Dick looked up at the bartender and looked at his name tag on his shirt. / “Johnathon Kirk, eh?”, he mumbled, “Why not just keep your nose out of my business?” Johnathon twitched and turned around to the shelf to put the glass back where it should be. • Digger History; ANZAC (( ANZACS TO THE END))) Here is to a nation of young and old, lost and loved ones. Let our flag fly high and proud for them for they are never forgotten. To Our glorious men, women, and children, ANZACS old and new. Sons and daughters from the home we call Australia and New Zealand. Diggers and Mateship said it all. ANZACS from past to future, Let our flag fly high and proud to show the nation who we are. Diggers forged SPIRIT, HOPE, MATESHIP, and FREEDOM. They paid the ultimate price – their lives. Let the nations of Australia and New Zealand never ever forget the ANZACS that lived, loved, and died for our nation’s future. From the trenches of Gallipoli to the present times of war, let none of our brave soldiers and the sacrifices they made from all of the bloody wars ever be forgotten. Courage, endurance, sacrifice, determination, bravery, kinship, friendship, comaraderie – ANZACS to the end. Let us NEVER forget! Slouch hat, emu plumes, light horsemen from the cities and outback answered the call of duty. Young and old, stockmen, swagmen, bushmen from cities near and far, New Zealanders, Indigenous Australians and businessmen, many races, answered the military call of volunteers to service. Recruitment gave birth to the ANZACS…ANZACS TO THE END William watego ……
