  • Worn Rabbit is an extension from the original series of 9 Animal Designs that are 4” x 4” canvas blocks that I created at end of 2007. I’ve utilised the selected pink or acrylic from the original series and inks on a distressed photo that I took and printed out on paper from one of my many sketch pads. The animal design series represents what we could be left with if we don’t take care of nature and all it’s creatures. With their charming toy like appearance, they could just end up like childhood memories.

  • This Rabbit was photographed near our home in Cornwall. Our house is bounded on two sides by a wood and field so we have good wildlife sightings (particularly birds) without having to go too far. The field has a large rabbit population at present so they are not too difficult to photograph.

  • Digital camera sensor cleaning and those rascally rabbits

Camera maintenance is an important habit to get into, but of course no one has to be too meticulous about it. Hell, housework is certainly not my strong point. This morning I gave my baby (Canon 20D) a spruce up. I thought it was perfect timing with the sun shining and a stunning blue sky – just as you’d expect in Melbourne. Of course at time of writing the clouds have rolled in to provide a diffusing effect to the scenery. :) The camera sensor was due for a little dust removal. So, off I toddled with the 50mm prime lens attached and I set the camera to manual mode and proceeded to take exposures at F/22. F/22 is perfect for revealing those dust bunnies. You know the one’s, those darn spots we remove in photoshop and are a right pain in the ass. What fun – not. Anyway, I soon found a big dust bunny had come to the party. The bloody thing was bigger than Bugs Bunny. Huh, that big bugger was in fact on the rear lens element, so after a few exposures rocket science (a brain wave) soon dictated that he/she had to be exterminated with a quick wipe with a soft lens cloth. Done. Onwards we go to a little fiddling in photoshop and a play with the auto levels option. That was interesting to say the least and clearly revealed those dastardly bunnies at their worst. After a few goes at exterminating them I have a relatively clean baby all ready to take for a spin. Above – Sensor before cleaning Above – Sensor after cleaning Above – Sensor before cleaning with auto levels adjustment in Photoshop Above – Sensor after cleaning with auto levels adjustment in Photoshop I use the Copper Hill kit products as supplied by Quality Cameras in Perth. I have no affiliation with them, but can recommend their prompt and courteous service and cleaning kit products. Of course I couldn’t get rid of all the bunnies, so I suspect the mummy and daddy bunny will make more little bunnies for me to exterminate in the future. Those rascally rabbits. • Oestridae (commonly called bot flies or botflies) is a family of Oestroidea. It is one of several families of hairy flies whose larvae live as parasites within the bodies of mammals. There are approximately 150 known species worldwide. Eggs are deposited in animal skin directly, the body heat of the animal induces hatching upon contact. Some forms of botfly also reside in the digestive tract when consumed by a licking action. When ready to emerge, a thumbnail-sized lump will appear and the Fly will break through the skin and fly away leaving it’s host alive with a small wound. / Wiki / Olympus E510

  • As I promised you here another shot from my sunrise trip to the Southern Heath near Hilversum. Indeed was rewarded more than abundantly for my early rising that morning. The low night temperature, the stillness of the air and the clear sky had caused a good level of low morning morning mist in the open land of the heath (on next morning I was going to discover that it was even mistier in polderland – but please keep patient). / Ah, that morning sun! Filling your soul with its magnificent light! Ever so invigorating to experience it, but also so hard a challenge in June! After all the sun rises here at about 5.15 am at the moment (in autumn, winter, and spring the challenge is a lot easier!). But the reward: an empty heath! Just you and the sun! And the rabbits of course! Though most oft hem had sprinted to their covers! Lucky ones: they can enjoy all the sunrises! May we conclude: Be a rabbit! Rise early! After all did not my mother teach me already: “Early to be, early to rise, makes a man happy, wealthy and wise.“ / Let me add. Not being a rabbit I am so grateful to you all! Without you I would never have discovered these sunrises and developped the new habit of sunrise-chasing, but would just be keeping my head on the pillow or piddling around the house. Whenever I tell some friend that there is nothing like a June sunrise at 5 am, they find me pretty crazy. What do they know? They do not have all my wonderful fans on deviantArt en Redbubble who make me go out so early and who enjoy my pictures afterwards. Well, if I succeed to get some good shots. So here is the challenge! Near Hilversum, 12th June 2009, 5.36 am / Nikkon D80, Nikkor 18-200 at 130 mm / F 16, 1/80, ISO 100
