I read a quote in the paper today and wanted to remember it to mention to a friend who has been going through a difficult ordeal recently. By the time I got home I couldn’t remember it word for word so had to google it. I’m so glad I forgot the words! Because I discovered so many more… I thought they were worth sharing. Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens. The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed. Art is a kind of innate drive that seizes a human being and makes him its instrument. The artist is not a person endowed with free will who seeks his own ends, but one who allows art to realize its purpose through him. Without this playing with fantasy no creative work has ever yet come to birth. The debt we owe to the play of imagination is incalculable. As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light of meaning in the darkness of mere being. Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word happy would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness. It is far better to take things as they come along with patience and equanimity. Carl Jung

...you find a piece of jigsaw at the bottom of your handbag. ...you spend your evening unravelling a slinky. ...leaving the house is like completing a military checklist. ...you find yourself shouting “Ooh look! A horse/cow/whatever” and realise the children are not actually in the car. ...you realise that ANYTHING can be cleaned with a babywipe. ...all your books and ornaments are 6 feet off the ground. ...you know where the Sellotape and pencils are but not a pen. ...every single light in the house has been turned on….. even when the sun is shining. ....you can recite all the words to The Gruffalo without looking at the book! ....you find a lego block in your bed. ....the phone rings and it’s never for you. ....you find yourself saying all the stuff your Mum used to say to you when you were a kid. ....you hear yourself saying “well I’m not EVERYONE else’s mother!” ....you have a piece of Sellotape holding your Sky card in. ...that warm body and wriggling behind you in bed is not your partner feeling amorous! ....you feel lost when you manage to go out on your own and you have to carry your bags rather than hang them on back of the pram! ...you put chocolate in the freezer so it’s too hard for kids to eat!

  • These Cards Have Been Given a New Home
    by Stephen Mitchell

As previously mentioned, I purchased fifteen of my own photographs ...

As previously mentioned, I purchased fifteen of my own photographs as cards. I’d ONLY planned to give a few away as gifts to close friends, and in particular to the one person who convinced me that my photography was worth selling. She knows who she is. So this morning I brought fifteen cards into work purely to allow these friends to choose the picture they liked most … and allow them to have it for FREE. These are the photographs they choose. / / ... for Yve / ... for Rosie / ... for Jenny / ... for Liam / / Little did I realise what would happen next… / / First, Jenny liked them so much she insisted (read: I caved) on having four more. Who am I to argue with a woman? So I decided on a price, she agreed … and I earned another ten dollars. Yes, I reduced the cost to $2.50. But that’s what you do for friends, and free publicity. / / , , So I stopped for a minute to consider my options. Why not sell them? OK, so I had instructions from “SWMBO” to keep some for Xmas and Birthday cards later this year. I was implicitly told that two would go family interstate within the next week! / / So after a quick email, these two photographs were purchased by Yve: / / , Then Wendy said she might miss out – so she bought three (and asked for three that had already been purchased)! / / , , Whew! I feel exhausted and exhilarated all at once! And I need to remember to exhale. Because selling one’s artwork is like giving one’s children away. The photography and post-production is nothing compared with suddenly becoming a ‘recognised photographer’. One person did say I could make more money if I did all this myself. Possibly. But all I want to do is photograph. RedBubble remove the hassle by doing all the framing, laminated, sending, and finances for me! / / One more thing: Wendy also gave me the boost and the BEST Quote of the day : ” I’d rather spend my money on your work, not on Hallmark! “ / Wow, I’ve been compared with Hallmark – and won! She also indicated she will purchase more of my cards online. Only one of the didn’t sell. I get to keep this one for my desk: ‘A picture tells a thousand words’. I love this quote. No longer do I need to write to family and friends – I only have to take one photograph to write a thousand words!

I’m cleaning up the study – hey, I cleaned up just six months ago, where did all this crap come from? – and I found a bundle of cards and signs that I had stuck up on the wall here. I have a long history of sticking things on walls, and that’s probably worth a journal post in itself. Not to mention a lengthy psychological treatise. But I digress. I like to collect quotes, the words and comments that slip out in our occasional moments of insight, and these two stick right out. Mainly because they’re on cards too big to fit in the envelope. “There are three rules that must be followed if one is to write a successful novel. Unfortunately, nobody knows what they are” – W Somerset Maugham. “Being captured by the adequate, being captured by the obvious, both prevent the best of information” – Edward De Bono.

I have been Bubbling with a fellow artist Mariam Muradian and she recently posted a journal collecting inspirational quotes. / This was my rather greedy [in size] post and I would love to share them with you too and please feel free to add your own too! / The more the merrier! :o) [I love each and every one of these:] “It takes one to know one!” – local school yard! :o) “This too shall Pass” – E Roosevelt “Today’s mighty oak is just yesterday’s nut that held its ground!” “Laughing is good exercise. It’s like jogging on the inside.” “Most beginnings are small, and appear trivial and insignificant, but in reality they are the most important things in life.” “Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional!” ’It’s frustrating when you know all the answers but nobody bothers to ask you the questions!” “If you want to know what god thinks of money, look at the people he gives it to” – New England saying “Those who give have all things. Those who withhold have nothing.” – Hindu proverb “Love is the strongest force the world possesses and yet is the humblest imaginable” – Mohandas K Gandhi, Indian spiritual leader (1869 – 1948) “I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark burn out in a brilliant blaze than it be stifled by dry rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow than a sleepy permanent planet” – Jack London (1876 – 1916) “Be nice to those you meet on the way up the ladder of success, for they’ll be there to help you on your way back down!” June Bronhill [Australian Opera Diva] [Especially :] “A little of what you fancy does you no harm” – Isobell Maud Ey [my Irish maternal great grandmother] / [ not that this is inspirational but – “Be’are ye sins’ll find ye out!” – another of Isobell’s fave sayings lol – she lived to 102 by the way :o) ] / “it’s all very well having these new fandangled machines, but who’s the idiot pushing the button!” – Dora Smart [my maternal grandmother] “You know something Mummy? Life is like a slide – you climb up the ladder and that’s hard work, you can go “TA-DA!” At the top and then you get the fun of going fast back down! Then you get to do it all over again! And the higher the slide the harder you climb but the longer you get to have fun!” Thomace Muldoon aged 3 [my son] “Life isn’t meant to be easy – get used to it!” [Thomace again aged 13 :o) ] “Freedom is having nothing left to do that needs to get done now!” [- Me I think lol] “Today is the tomorrow you waited for yesterday – do it now!” [to defeat procrastination] “Being an adult is not an age or a piece of paper, it is when you realise you have the courage to get up and do what you see has to be done first, even if you don’t want to do it.” _ [- me ] “Smile and the world smiles with you cry and you cry alone, / But if you laugh then it is infectious, Imagine the growth of such an illness sown!” [the addition is from me for my RB profile lol] [ Oh and for those struggling with injustices of any kind be that financial, persecution, abuse or just plain suffering the “fed-ups!” ... ] NIL DESPIRADUM ILLIGITIMUS CARBORUNDUM! / “Don’t let the bastards grind you down!” KEEP HAPPY!!!! ~ adg :o) PS / Please go see the other quotes that were posted here on Miriam’s journal entry thank you – Chookas!! :o)

3D modelling is not something I’m comfortable with. But I’ve decided to learn to do it anyway. Since I can’t afford 3D Studio Max (which costs about a year’s salary back when I had one!) I’m using the free program Blender ... and it’s not easy. This puts me in mind of a quote I came across years ago and wrote down in my diary, knowing it would be useful one day. Today is the day. “Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before. He is full of murderous resentment of people who are ignorant without having come by their ignorance the hard way.” – Kurt Vonnegut Ok, back to faces, edges and vertices, and all the related confusing things ;)

RB, you guys have a lot to answer for, all these people with eyes glued to computer screens, fingers that are worn down to the first knuckles and silly grins on their faces (heaps of happy, overjoyed, enthusiastic and encouraged people) !!!!! The only problem now is with all this creativity, someone had better come up with a lot more hours in the day !!! My sincerest thanks, once again, to ALL that have viewed my work, given lots of encouragement with the comments and bought my work !! RB is absolutely wonderful, I’ve said it before, but I reinforce the statement that “it has given me a new lease of life”and it is just so great to interact with so many people(all who are Maestros) from as close as my own home town to the far reaches of this big wide wonderful world full of unique artists. Keep it up, and RB I assume today will have 25 hours…... Sincerely Phil T.
