I would like everyones opinion about / 1- what sells- is it a view that makes a serene or emotive statement about the landscape? Is it a visual diorama unique and vibrant, or equally a quaint digital impression of paint strokes or a vector creation in line and tone? or maybe its something else? / lets not be vague here and say its in the eyes of the buyer- lets try and be specific…..can we ? / AND question 2- / How do you gauge the quality of your work in view to its saleability? / might it be about the content, the attention to the digital reproduction, the composition, whether it has a contemporary appeal,......is it just luck to find a buyer, or is it about exposure, in this case internet exposure, or in view of the proposed exhibition coming up, exhibition exposure???? / I would like to hear from the people who have bought work here and the people who have sold something, and everyone elses’ opinion especially those experienced in marketing. / I look forward to our discussion… / xxJiennxx

Just throwing an idea around in here before sticking this in a forum. How do you think it would go down if artists had the ability to delete ANY comments made on their artwork at their discretion and bypassing any offical reporting procedure? A more extreme version of this is blocking particular members from commenting on any of your work in cases of say, creepy or pervy vibes. My thinking is that it would allow artists to ‘draw the line’ on the tone of comments found acceptable by the individual. Recently I got a few comments that I’d rather not have had visible to the whole wide world that were not ‘bad enough’ to report. They were more a refelection of the commenter than of my work and it would have been nice to delete them so as to encourage more of the mature and constructive comments I was also getting and really appreciating. Would allowing artists to do this create other problems? How well does it work on other sites? I’m just curious as to what other people think of this.

I’m yet again back on on here looking for some answers after being asked to remove stuff again. I just can’t seem to get it right. Please don’t get me wrong- I don’t want to offend anyone but I’m actually finding it quite difficult to get the right balance. In the past I’ve put up work I think is tasteful or subtle or that has a lot of artistic merit and been suggested to remove it. I put up stuff today that this very afternoon was viewed and commented on by primary school children with their mother present and yet I post it on here and got emails from two people about it’s appropriateness. I’m at the point where if I get one inappropriate comment from someone I freak out that I shouldn’t have posted it. HEEELLLP! I guess what I’m finding so upsetting is that I seem to be unable to predict what is going to upset people. If that is the case, I need some sort of guidelines to work against. I’m also probably extra sensitive about taking stuff down- I’ve never been ‘told to’ but if someone says that it’s concerning them, of course I remove it straight away. I don’t think I’ve ever posted anything “disturbing” and certainly nothing violent. And as I said before, artwork that a mother happily showed her primary aged school children this afternoon caused a problem when I posted them this evening. I just can’t win. It’s really upsetting. I’m basically not going to upload any more work with a person in it until there is some sort of decision about this. I’m not prepared to keep risking it. Can anyone offer some solid suggestions on what you would consider “too much” for a public site because this is starting to get too hard for me. I’m probably coming across as irrational or melodramatic but it’s starting to really upset me that I keep upsetting other people. That’s the last thing I want to do.

Hello and welcome to all Red Bubblers in this group! I am really excited about reading, exploring and debating artistic pieces of work that are so typical of so many talented writers on RB. A few house rules: (1) Let’s try to keep it to 1-2 downloads per person on a daily basis to allow the work to be viewed and not flood the group page please. / (2) Have fun and be as creative as you like / (3) When commenting or feeding back remember to be sensitive – artists are sensitive people! / (4) Any queries about the group – send me a Bubblemail and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. / (5) Any ideas or suggestions – I’m all ears Most of all enjoy! Here’s to an unfolding magical journey of creativity and the inspiration that comes with being part of such a wonderful group of people! Suzanne

There was no way I could fit all of the wonderful responses I got to this question in BubbleWrap so I thought I’d share some more of them with you here and invite you to add what RedBubble means to you too. What Does RedBubble Mean To You? (in 50 words or less) not getting my real work done, sore wrists, scraped knees from photo shoots, the company of equally minded loony brains who are mad as a cut snake, being able to approach any subject in front of an open minded audience without the fear of fists flyling…all of which i would never want to have to trade in… Jessica Tremp red bubble means building new friendships, meeting new and interesting people from all over the world. / red bubble means that I can share my work with others and get their opinion on my work and also sell it at reasonable prices to any one any where in the world with ease. / because of rb I get to meet people and view their art that I other wise would not have know that even existed and I also get to be a member of an awesome community with hundreds of lovely and very talented artist, writers, painters, drawers, photographers. / Red bubble also means that I can get great advice and help with my work with out it being a big deal or a hassle to any one and I look at rb as kind of giving me a further education with my photography and also life’s history. / I now can’t live with out rb and don’t want to, if I didn’t come across rb I would be lost. dairygirl I am very new to Red Bubble, but I feel like I’ve been embraced with wide open arms. I’ve never participated in a creative community that actually matches my own enthusiasm – that is until now! For me, RB is a place where I can engage with other artists, some whom I’ve admired in national design magazines. The opportunity for networking is incredible, and I’ve never seen it work so seamlessly on a website with such enjoyable and addictive results! Natalie Baird Redbubble to me is a community full of great artists who strive to create. Its a great place to hang out and make friends with people who have a common goal. To improve on ones own performance and encourage others to do the same. Julie Langford Redbubble, to me, is possibility and growth. Encouraging me whilst challenging me. Allowing me vulnerability whilst strengthening me. Redbubble is like the parent teaching me to ride a bike for the first time – giving me the support, the training wheels, sticking close by me…yet letting me go at that last moment, allowing me to ride free, to find my own way. Kristy Lee I found Red Bubble in May 2007 and signed up without really knowing what I was letting myself in for, but hoping to increase Sydney’s awareness of 3D CG art. As I started uploading work, I noticed people were commenting on each picture I uploaded… all very positive. Other artists immediately started to favourite my work and also added me to their watchlists. I belong to other sites worldwide, and I have not had the same overwhelming response to my work anywhere else online. Since joining Red Bubble …. - my work has been viewed close to 50000 times - I’ve had a whole exhibition printed by Bubble - I have met many amazing artists and writers at Red Bubble, some of whom I have had the honour of working with… Paul Louis Villani, Witheringmoon, Steve Axford, Hans Kawitzki, Richie Dean, Kevin Kroeker, Kathleen, Damian and Veronica Purcell and James Pierce to mention a few (ok to mention a lot!) - I have a place to send potential clients to view my portfolio - I met Bodymechanic here at the bubble and now my work is on display at Gallery 26 in Sydney and through him was also exhibited at the Tap Gallery, also in Sydney … this has led to exhibitions at other venues. There have been many more bubble experiences for me, but these are the stand out ones. Rose Moxon RedBubble is more than just a shopfront for me, it’s a community and almost a family that I am happy to be a part of. I enjoy helping our other members, talking about absolute garbage (in the Soapbox forum) and commenting on some very great work! I joined this site at the start of September ‘07 and I’m proud to say that I already feel like I’ve been here for a very very long time, or as I was here when it first started. I’ve seen the community grow and evolve in the last couple of months and enjoy it very much. Faizan Qureshi For me, RedBubble is all about passion! / I love life, art, creation, experimentation, expression and the feeling of community, and want to share every bit of it with people who have the same passion for it as I do. RedBubble gives us all that opportunity. / It’s a way to connect and share and express yourself in the way we all need to deep down. James Price Redbubble is the first place I log onto when I get online in the morning, the only place I feel a real sense of community and sharing, and the best place for an artist on the web to be if they are interested in friendship, inspiration, top notch administration, and the potential to sell their work in a user friendly environment! Mundy Hackett The best part about RB for me has been meeting people with similar interests and the sharing of knowledge and ideas as a consequence of those meetings. / When I say “meeting” I mean meeting in the physical sense, not just in cyberspace! Andrew Bosman redbubble is a place where I can share my work with others who share the same interest as myself. But it’s more then just that, It’s a place where I can go and spend time just letting loose in the forums, and have a little fun at the same time with other artists within the community. :) EOS20 An ideal vehicle for artist interaction that has inspired and motivated me. I’ve made new friends, shared ideas, collaborations and have come to appreciate and enjoy the originality and creativity that abounds on RB. I’ve become an armchair traveler, an observer, a participant and a student. But, most importantly…… I’ve realised how fortunate I am. / Thank you redbubble for this journey! Mugsy What RedBubble means to me, is a collective of like-minded creative souls, coming together to form one fantastic place to hangout online. Where you can see anything and everything, and find inspiration for your creativity and even meet some wonderful people. ashlynmm Ready? / Enjoy / Discussing Beautiful Artwork and Writing / Ultimately / Benefiting everyone / Because / Life IS a Bubble / Everyday!! Hey all, / Below are a list of easy keyboard commands for Photoshop. I’m using a regular PC (Windows) but if you use a mac, all of the controls will be different…and because I don’t have a Mac within reach, I can’t get the commands for that. Sorry Mac users! Control + N = Opening a New Canvas / Control + O = Opening a new project from a different file (such as a photo) / Control + Z = Undo very last action; nothing past that. / Control + Alt + Z = Undo past actions; infinite. / Control + Shift + Z = Redo an action (that is, if you have already undone an action.) / Control + Shift + F = Fade… (This is a VERY useful tool that I just discovered about 2 minutes ago…For example, you draw something a little too light…do this command then you can make the brush stroke’s opacity darker! Again, VERY useful!) / Control + X = Cut / Control + C = Copy / Control + V = Paste / Control + Shift + V = Paste Into (Don’t know exactly what this does for sure yet but, apparently it’s useful?) / Control + I = Invert (makes a negative [or positive] of the image selected) / Control + A = Selects the whole canvas / Control + Shift + D = Reselects the part that was once selected, then deselected. / Control + D = Deselects the canvas / Control + – = Zoom Out / Control + + = Zoom In And there’s plenty more but these are the basic necessary keyboard commands for Photoshop. -Brittany

This morning I received an email from a beautiful lady who is in the USA and often commissions me to do work for her or clients. / She wanted to use some of my artwork that is on Redbubble and that is all great as far as I am concerned. However…in her email were copies of my artwork, taken from Redbubble, obviously I can only assume – by the right click method – and these images are HUGE and of quality resolution – definitely good enough to print, and I want to know WHY IS IT SO EASY for someone to take my images in top format from Redbubble!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IF a friend has done this, with the good intentions of paying me for using them, HOW MANY have done it with lesser intentions! And I will never know. / Redbubble – please explain! / Or else I will be removing all my work from RB! I also must add, I have the setting on so that a large watermark appears on my images, but there was no watermark on any of the ones she had sampled, even works that I have up on RB that are marked as NFS! / I am very upset about this. Please check out the forum post

I’m re-working my marketing/sales kit with the goal of actually actively selling my stuff again. It’s been a few months since I made an effort and I feel slack. Upon checking out the interview I used to send around, I am appalled at the boring and irrelevant questions I asked myself. And at my boring and irrelevant answers. Can you think of some better/cooler/funnier/more useful questions I can interview myself with? Or even just some completely random questions or facts I could throw in for the heck of it? My brain is too fizzled to think for myself this afternoon. Must be Friday :)

This weeks Red Bubbler up for interogation is the beautiful wordsmith LisaG / / / / How many superlatives can one use to describe this wonderful lady and her lyrical creations? / Billions! / Her vast array of subject matter and playful phrasing make her an inspiration to us aspiring writers. / Please take the time to read some of her work here and you will be left with no doubts as to why she is one of Red Bubbles most popular and appreciated writers! / / I’ve got a couple of favs for you to check out…. / / Scat / Felicity / & / Ode to Led Zeppelin / / Ok, enough with the hugs and kisses and on with the show!! :D / PLV – 1. If money or responsibilities were not an option… where would you be right now and what would you be doing? / / I’d be in Fiesole, Tuscany… my soul home… studying Etruscan History, writing amongst my vegies and herbs, learning Italian from my neighbours. Taking trips all throughout Italy until; I master a dish from each region. Watch Mark paint canvas after canvas. And finally learn the Cello. / / PLV – 2. Did you grow up to be what you grew up wanting to be? Care to explain? / / I wanted to be a Nurse, like my grandmother and mother….my life changed when I had my first child, very young. I left school after year 10 and had three children by the time I was 21. I did go on to study at Uni but my choice of study was an Arts degree (Ancient Civilisations) and I’m yet to use it. I don’t believe I really have a vocation – I’ve been content in my employment; I have been working for a large Telco for 5 years. As it turns out… I think I would have made a great nurse ;) / / PLV – 3. You are stranded on a desert island and given 5 foods you will have to eat for the rest of your life… What will you choose? Add a drink or two just for balance! / / Rice / Vegetables / Pasta / Bread / Meat / / Hehe does that count? Or do I have to pick dishes. If so. / / Mushroom Risotto / Lasagna / Grano padano with crusty bread / Curried pumpkin soup / Guinness Pie / / Sav blanc wine – Orange Juice (ok fine, bourbon and coke) / / PLV – 4. Up until now, what has been the best year in your life (199? or 198?) and what happened in that year that made it so great? / / Impossible, I’ve 3 children I adore, each born in different years. I’m married to a wonderful man, another year there. / / BUT… Then there is the year after I left my first marriage (1995). After being told, I’d amount to nothing, that I was in fact nothing… by my first husband. I worked out, I was something. My children and I blossomed, I started Uni. I started a part time job, I had almost NO money, but somehow I took care of my children; in what now seems like a grand style. I discovered, the arts – theatre, art galleries, conversation, I found my voice. / / PLV – 5. If you had been an actor/actress what 5 movies would you have loved to have starred in and why? / / Oh this is hard – as I can easily pick my five favourite movies. / / Judy Garland – Dorothy – The Wizard of Oz / For the adventure, her compassion and strength – even though she had lost sight of “there is no place like home” / / Robin Williams – John Keating – Dead Poets Society / To inspire passion, enthusiasm, and loyalty in others; is an incredible gift and admirable. / / Audrey Tautou – Amélie / Oh geez, just to be Amelie would be it for me….to be quirky, carefree, yet caring, crazy yet sane. Makes the most sense, I’ve ever seen. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous… / / The last two are slightly different, they are not just about the roles and actors but about those they worked with. / / Susan Sarandon – Sister Helen Prejean – Dead Man Walking. / Firstly, for those that know me – they will get my Nun fascination, hehe. But primarily I would love to work beside Sean Penn, for me one of the finest actors, ever. / / Morgan Freeman … Ellis Boyd Redding – The Shawshank Redemption / He held his dignity and persevered to find his utopia against all the odds. And OMG got to work with Tim Robbins…whose performance and character I shall never forget. /

I love receiving comments and am overjoyed when someone favours my work, but it does not generate sales. Why is That? My question to every RB’er , in particular those who are highly successful on RB, how does one increase sales. How do we get buyers from outside the RB empire interested enough to buy. RB does not market itself or our work very well, as it expects us to do this for them RB homepage* – does not look commercially attractive to potential non-member buyers. It does not target type of design, or art etc.. Search engine does not work very well. In fact there is no point directing anyone there, as they will never find you. Ebay – forget it prices are to high by the time you add printing, shipping, margin costs. There are no reasonable discounts available to us from RB. RB’s cards are good quality, but the price is too high for us to have a reasonable margin Personal website – this will cost money to look professional, with shopping cart direct to the merchandise. Additional costs include getting it on all the search engines as otherwise your website will remain a little atom in the sea of the www Anyone, got any good ideas, maybe even good ideas we could put forward to RB (including a 10% discount on 10 cards+ etc. ) I would like to hear from you that have made some good sales here, if you dare tell us how many cards, pictures or tees you have sold over a given time period. even send me a bubblemail and I will do a follow up journal without names if you prefer to remain anonymous I am not attacking RB, but it is no secret, that they expect either the members create sales for them within the community, or we market RB outside for them and ourselves.r People will buy cards , laminated or matted prints if they are priced competitively, even in a recessionary market. At this point it is not possible given the basic price RB charges in particular for cards, as this would not even cove our marketing costs or give us a reasonable profit. People love buying Limited Editions, well we can say that or prove that, so that is a no go. Maybe RB could devise / recommend something clever here. SUGGESTIONS SO FAR 1. Red Addiction – Spread yourself widely within RB which could generate a sale / 2. Alan Findlater -make up cards adn give to clients, friends , work colleagues . / 3. Alan Findlater – promote on social networks such as You Tube, Facebook etc., your own site / 4. Stephen Mitchell – Buy your artwork yourself. Sell it to friends, family and in local retail outlets. / (Alan Findlater suggested don’t buy on RB because cost to high,)

My primary goal for the next 3 months is to help you sell your art. Selling stuff used to be my profession, but now it is my passion. And I have plans about how I might help you make more money from your art and designs. But before I spend hours doing research, conducting interviews and writing articles, I’d like to know, what you want to know. I don’t profess to know it all, but I’ll be giving it my all to find out! Do you have a question about marketing or selling your own art? I’d like to hear it

WOW… so far we’ve had 745 favouritings and 10,419 views since uploading this journal. Hope it helps :) Hi Everyone This would be the most FAQ I receive from other bubblers, ie, how do i enhance my profile, how do I create a link, how do I display my products on the page…. It’s so easy, very simple, just a few steps away – anyone can do it, you can do it!! Be encouraged! As I receive lots of requests for assistance about enhancing the front profile page of your red bubble homepage, I have decided to take some time to describe and explain in a step by step tutorial the various methods. / a) I always begin by opening up two tabs/windows / b) Open the ‘edit your profile page’ or the ‘edit your description’ box in the first tab/window / c) In the first window where you are editing your description, type an exclamation mark ! / d) Click to open the other tab/window / e) Go to the public view of the image whose product you wish to display / f) Click on the BUY/PREVIEW NOW button / g) You will notice there are a range of products here for you to choose from eg, card preview, print preview, laminated print preview, matted print preview / h) Click one of these options to view the product / i) Once you have chosen which product you’d like to add as a preview, right click on it and select ‘copy image location’ / j) Return to your first opened tab/window and paste the ‘copied image location’ right beside the exclamation mark / k) Add another exclamation mark after the pasted image location, leaving no spaces / YOU NOW HAVE DISPLAYED YOUR PRODUCT You can go on to make this a clickable link if desired. / l) Add a colon right next to the exclamation mark / m) Click on the second tab/window and press the back button at the top left hand side of your browser twice until it returns to the public view of your image / n) click in the url website address box at the top of your computer to highlight it / o) right click to copy the address / p) return to your first open tab/window and paste the copied url address beside the colon / YOU NOW HAVE A CLICKABLE LINK to the page from your product preview display This is very similar to how you would display a tshirt, but the tees are a littler easier, you do not need to go to the BUY/PREVIEW as you can copy the image location of your tshirt for display just by going to the main page where your image is located… bypassing that step, the rest is pretty much the same. for example below is a clickable text link / Click here to see my Calendars when you create the link it should end up looking something like this / a) I always begin by opening up two tabs/windows / b) Open the ‘edit your profile page’ or the ‘edit your description’ box in the first tab/window / c) Type one set of inverted commas / d) Type in the text, eg, “link to my website” , or “click here” / e) Type another set of inverted commas at the end of your text / f) Type a colon : / g)Click on the second tab/window and go to the website you want your text linked to / h) Right click in the url box at the top of the screen to highlight the url/website address or another page on red bubble where you are linking your text to a work of art etc / i) Paste the address right beside the colon / j) there should be no spaces whatsover / k) Click on the button to Save your changes / l) Go to preview and check the link has worked and is clickable / m) If not – recheck that you haven’t left any spaces, etc for example below is a clickable image link / It should look something like this / a) as above / b) as above / c) Type in an exclamation mark ! / d) Click on the second tab/window and go to the image you wish to add and make clickable / e) Because most images on RB are now protected with clear gifs, you cannot just copy the image itself, you will need to click on the preview/buy button to view the products, such as cards and prints, unless it’s a tshirt…which you can copy… once you’ve chosen product you wish to display….. / e) Right click on the image and choose the ‘copy image location’ option an click on it / f) Return to the first open tab in the editing box / g) Paste the image location right beside the exclamation mark / h) Type another exclamation mark, directly after the image location / i) Type a colon / j) Click on the second tab/window and go to the url address of the page your image is on / k) Click on the address to highlight it / l) Right click to copy the address / m) Return to your first tab/window and paste the url address beside the colon / n) Click to save your changes / o) Click to preview / p) You should have a clickable image link / q) If not, return to your editing and check you have left no spaces anywhere here’s an example of a clickable thumbnail / Here’s what it should like like to you / a) as above (open the edit your profile box in my bubble) / b) as above (open it up at my bubble and go to Art) / c) return to the edit your profile box / d) insert an exclamation mark / e) Click on the second tab/window / f) Locate the small thumbnail you wish to display in your profile from your Art or TShirt Section Listings in your My Bubble area / g) Right click on the small thumnail and click on copy image location / h) Click on first tab and paste the image location right beside the exclamation mark / i) Insert an exclamation mark directly after the url / j) Insert a colon directly after the exclamation mark / k) Click on your second tab/window / l) Go to the thumbnail and click on the thumbnail / m) Go to the url/website address of your image and click in the url box to highlight url address / n) Left click to copy the address / o) Return to your first tab/window (edit your profile) and past the url address directly beside the colon leaving no spaces whatsoever / p) Save your changes / q) Go to view publick view of your work / r) You should now have a clickable thumbnail / s) If not go back to edit your profile and check you’ve left no spaces and recheck your steps PS – if you wish to add a whole heap of thumbnails repeat the process, leaving one space between each thumbnail Here’s an example of a Banner / Here’s an example of what it would look like to you / I have added some nice banners to the front of my Profile Page, and folks often ask how this is done. If you have software like Photoshop and are family with it, then it should be fairly easy. I create a banner in Photoshop, using a simple rectangle shape, keeping it rather small in size …. approx 500×70 pixels (or 6×9 cm) something like that should fit fairly well in the space. I then save my file. I opened a Photobucket account especially so that I could create banners and save them to Photobucket (a free online Photo storage facility). Photobucket is very easy to use, simple and self explanatory. Once you have opened your account there you can upload your banners from your Photoshop saved files. Once you have saved your banners there, you can click on the Direct Link button beneath your thumbnail, to automatically copy the image location address. To make your banners appear in the ‘Edit your Profile’ area, or in your Description Boxes, you only need to do the following: a) as above / b) as above / c) In the edit your profile or description box, insert an exclamation mark / d) click on the second tab where you will have your Photobucket opened up / e) click on the Direct Link in Photobucket to copy the address of the banner you’ve created / f) Go to your first tab/window and paste the Direct Link image address directly beside the exclamation mark / g) Type in another exclamation mark directly after the Direct Link address / h) SAVE your changes / i) Go to View public profile / j) You should now have a beautiful new banner visible on your page / k) if not, recheck your steps and make sure you’ve left no spaces You can make your banner clickable by additionally adding a colon after the exclamation mark, and adding the url of the page you wish to link the banner to. / See example below: / / or / click here to view my tshirts In order to do this you must tag all similar works with a word, by going to edit your art work, and adding the tag to your other tags and saving your work, once you have adding the appropriate word to each of your works, to categories them… you can begin making sets to take customers to sets of your work… you can use a banner or text or an image link to do so for the first part… sandwiching the text/image/banner between two exclamation marks as we have done above. You will need to use an address like this for tshirt collection, but insert your own name instead of karin, and your own tag word, I have used tee, after the equal sign, eg / http://www.redbubble.com/people/karin/clothing?tag=tee so, you add whatever tag word you like at the end after the equal sign, and then be sure to add the tag word, in my case it’s tee, to all your tshirt designs in the tag section, (via editing) and remember to click save or if it’s an artwork collection, you would use the address below for art collections, but you need to insert your own name instead of karin, and your own tag word relative to your particular collection, in my case it’s whales, or baby, or beach, etc… : / http://www.redbubble.com/people/karin/portfolio?tag=whales so now it looks like this below, but be sure to take out any spaces, insert your own banner url address, add the colon, and your tee or portfolio address, using your own red bubble user name and your own chosen tag ! http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/karinlouisetaylor/JUNEBANNERSwhales.jpg !: http://www.redbubble.com/people/karin/portfolio?tag=whales From now on you will see the button below displayed on my Profile Page here at Red Bubble, and this will link you directly back to this page for further/future refence. / For more information or further enquiries please click on the following links: / Please do not hesitate to email support@redbubble.com if you are having trouble or needing help of any kind, they are only too happy to help with your enquiries HOW TO ADD THE ABOVE BUTTONS TO YOUR OWN PROFILE PAGE TO HELP OTHERS FIND HELP FAST I would actually be grateful if you added the above assistance buttons/banners and links to your own Profile Pages to spread the word to others, and make access to help more easily available to newcomers and everyone on the bubble…. spread the love around…. / You’ll find out how to do this in the Tutorial…. :) How to add the banners to your own profile page..to help other bubblers have easy access to help and assistance and spread the word around a) Open two tabs/windows in your browser / b) Click on ‘Edit your Profile” / c) Click on the second tab/window / d) Go to this journal page here / e) Scroll down until you get to the button/banner / f) Right click on the banner/button / g) click on copy image location / h) Return to the first open tab/window to ‘Edit your Profile / I) Type in an exclamation mark ! / m) Paste the image location right beside the exclamation mark leaving no spaces / n) Type in an exclamation mark right after the image location / o) Type in a colon directly beside the exclamation mark / p) click on the second window/tab and go to the url box of tutorial page to highlght the address / q) paste the url right next to the colon (leave no spaces whatsoever) What you’ve typed should look a lot like this below, without the spacing….. you musn’t leave any spaces….. if you prefer you can simply copy and paste this below information into your ‘Edit Your Profile’ box and just by removing the spaces you will have created a clickable image/banner link to the Tutorial / ! http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/karinlouisetaylor/bannerEnhanceYourProfile.jpg ! : http://www.redbubble.com/people/karin/journal/1964545-tutorial-how-to-enhance-your-profile Underneath is the coding to copy and past the other two buttons / ! http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/karinlouisetaylor/BANNERTUTORIALS.png ! : http://www.redbubble.com/people/karin/journal/1469814-linking-and-enhancing-your-profile-on-red-bubble ! http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/karinlouisetaylor/BANNERFAQ.png ! : http://www.redbubble.com/groups/redbubble/forums Just don’t forget to remove those spaces between the exlamation marks and colon thank you for time time in reading this…. and I would be absolutely thrilled if you shared this information with your friends…. and anyone who needs help! In a recent Redbubble Journal entitled “Art – What’s the Point – Peter posed the question – “why do we create art?” I have really had to think about this over the past few weeks. Being an artist or should I say, a creative person, is like another dimension overlaid upon our humanity, that ripples and moves with us in everything we do….. it is like magnifying glass through which we see ourselves, the world and our place in it. It is an intangible element to the core essence of who we are, and lays dormant in some, and explodes with passion in others, while for many it simmers just beneath the surface and becomes visible in many other ways. / / I liken creativity to our spirituality – we all have the seed of our faith or spirit in our very cells, we carry the questions, the desire, the awareness, and the potential within us, but we are all unique and have different views and ideologies, and infinite ways of expressing these perspectives. Eventually we all arrive at different facets of a greater truth, (like sitting in our own seats at one grand table). / And most importantly, we should never be made to conform to anyone else’s viewpoint, expectations, medium or belief system, or compromise our own to suit another. So, this to me, describes both spirituality and art. Both are the most personal and unique expressions of who we are. What you express as art, reveals your soul. Enough of my philosophies! My reasons for reflecting thus is because this was all brought home to me recently as the rollercoaster of life and art continued. I recently had to retrieve my work from a major city art gallery where they have had a Christmas exhibition, and had invited me to enter six pieces of art back in November. I had also entered another piece in an upcoming major art exhibition (next month) but this piece had been “declined”. The six pieces had not sold, but that did not surprise me, as they were way overpriced. I say this, shaking my head as I really don’t know what else to do ….. by the time I add up the cost of printing and framing and then add the gallery’s one third commission, there was no room for anything for “the artist”. However, once the gallery took my work, they then added on a further amount to the price to cover their own GST should it sell. That pushed the artworks way beyond their value, and made them unsaleable. (IMHO). It was really sad to go in and pick up the seven pieces of art, and find out that of the work I had prepared and framed especially for them, some had not even been unwrapped and hung over the two months of the exhibition. I was really upset as it seemed like a bit of a smack in the face, a waste of time, money and energy, and a statement about a less than favourable opinion of my work. A gallery attendant who assisted me said of my most popular piece here on RB “Forgiveness” / / “Maybe it was declined because of its religious connotations” !!! (Huh??) I have to confess, I was tired and shed quite a few tears going home with my car stacked full of “my unwanted art”. It really made me feel “less” and I questioned whether I was making a big mistake in believing in myself enough to put my art in public galleries.. On top of that, I had a bad experience with the people I had used to print my large canvases. I had opted to spend locally, and when I took my files in to be printed, was assured that their print methods were top quality, the examples I saw LOOKED good, and I was told that by paying a little extra, they could also seal the canvases with a product used by a certain well know local artist. (which I did). Upon receiving the canvas prints, my initial reaction was “wow! These look fabulous!” and so I took them to the framer to get them ready for the abovementioned exhibitions; my framer is a professional I have used for five years and trust completely. When I returned to collect them, he informed me to never have my canvases printed at “that place” again and in dismay I saw why – everywhere he had held the canvas to stretch it around the frame, the ink had rubbed right off the canvas, leaving what appeared to be white finger prints around the edges of several of the canvases. This left my work looking shoddy and not suitable for a professional exhibition, and after spending close to a thousand dollars with this firm, I was devastated. (I emailed the company and explained what had happened, expressed my dismay, and they did not bother replying) BUT….. I had to remind myself to “believe”. Being in such a community as Redbubble certainly buoys my spirits and my belief in art for art’s sake and ART for MY SAKE…..and the importance of expressing myself though a creative endeavour, regardless of what other’s opinions are or how my work is perceived. I knew I had to let all the above “go”….. Sure enough the wheel turned and the following experience certainly erased any negative fallout I had been carrying from my experience with the city gallery or the shonky printers. I recently went to a reptile park in a neighbouring town. I got talking to the young woman there about the snakes I had seen after the fires on our farmland….and when she asked more questions about where she could see a photo, I wrote down my name and redbubble’s website so she could see the photos from the fire. When she saw my name, she exclaimed “OH my God! Are YOU Wendy Slee? My Mum and I go to the art gallery all the time to see your work! You are my favourite artist! I just love your work!” Can you imagine how I felt hearing something like this! I had tears in my eyes and did not know what to say or do….suffice to say, it overwhelmed me that a stranger knew of my work and felt this way. I went home feeling like I had won a first prize in an art comp, or received a million dollars for a piece of my art! What had just happened to me meant more than money! / The story did not quite end there as the next day, the owner of the park phoned me and asked “are you the lady who was down here yesterday, who is an artist?” And she went on to explain that she had been “eavesdropping” from her office, and that she and her husband had been seeking to buy a special gift to repay the young woman who worked for them, and could not think of anything better than a piece of my art! And so between us we worked out which was the favourite, and I delivered it to them, so they could present her with it as a token of their appreciation for her dedication at their reptile park. It was the most beautiful thing for me to be a party to. The young woman was thrilled – we had managed to get her favourite piece – “The Horses – / / and there were hugs and tears all round. Again, I felt like a million dollars. And to top it off, this week the Conscious Living magazine came out across Australia featuring my artwork on the cover and on a second article inside! / So I guess it just goes to show, you win some, you lose some, life may hand out some crappy times, but if you believe in yourself (and what you create), good things will happen…. I hope your art does this for you too. Believe it!

I, like most of us get influenced, inspired and awe struck when veiwing new, unique and creative art. Jessica Walker is an artist that ranks high on my list of favorite photographers and I thought it appropriate to grill her about a couple of things… / / 1) How did you find Red Bubble and are you enjoying this online artistic community? / / I found red bubble through my friend Fire Marie who came across it before I did and told me I should join it. So far I’m very pleased with the way red bubble is run. People here are very kind, they give great feedback, the artwork here is very diverse and something unique about the site is that it is mostly made up of a member base of adults. I think because of that I can take it more seriously as an art community. Not that I don’t respect artists even younger than myself, but I have had a problem on other art communities with young kids and teenagers causing problems on the site. I like red bubble because it is about the art, no baggage, no strings attached and no drama. / / 2) Describe yourself and your art… do you “live” your art or is art a separate thing in your life? / / The answer to this question really does change depending on how I am feeling and where I am at in my life. Sometimes I feel like I cannot breathe without taking photos and other times I feel alright putting the camera down for a while and taking in life. I think this kind of mutual balance is easier than living by one extreme or another. / / 3) So far, what has been your greatest artistic achievement and where are you headed, what are your dreams both personally and artistically? / / I’m not sure if I really have reached my greatest artistic achievement yet. So far, my most memorable achievements are when I sell my work, make money off of it and receive recognition for it. Being recognized as an artist and appreciated for it is what keeps me going I think. I’m one of those artists who is never really 100% pleased with my art. I can always find things in it that just aren’t right, or could always be better. But that’s what makes a good artist. You sometimes have to be your own worst critic. That way your work will always have room for improvement and therefore, it will always grow and become better. My dreams as an artist have always been to continue improving my art, and right now my greatest dream and hope is for my work to be published and more widely recognized. I want to show my work to the world on a wider scale. I want to know what my images make people feel. Sometimes the greatest reward to making art, is seeing what kind of emotional or mental impact it can have on people. / / 4) Who has or have been the biggest influence on you as an artist? / / For this question, I cannot answer with a single person or name that has influenced me the most. Because none really come to mind. I believe the right answer for me is, my life experiences as a whole (all people and places involved) guide me through my artistic journey. They help me to grow, through good times and difficult times… all these things are reflected in my photography. / / 5) Name 5 people you would have over for dinner and what you would cook for them? / / I have a hard time answering those kind of questions because it takes me forever to come up with the “right answer”. So instead I’ll say, I’d have a huge party and invite everyone I ever cared for and I’d make it a potluck so we could all bring our favorite dishes. And it would be an art party and everyone would be invited to hang their work on the walls for all to see. (I’m not much of a cook! Haha.) / / Ok, here are some quick ones… / What are you? / Realist or Dreamer = Dreamer all the way / Dancer or Voyuer = Dancer / Harmonica or Sitar = Sitar / Chatterer or Listener = Listener / Color or B&W = Color / Books or Mags = Books / / What are your… / / Favorite TV show? Battlestar Galactica, House, Lost, Dexter / Favorite Movie? Fight Club, Clockwork Orange, V for Vendetta, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Silent Hill, In the Mouth of Madness (I can never choose just one) / Favorite Band(s)? NIN, VNV Nation, Massive Attack, Portishead, Pink Floyd, Aphex Twin / Favorite Song? I have so many I couldn’t even attempt to list them all! / Favorite Place in The World? I haven’t traveled enough to really find my perfect place yet, but I’m fond of the natural world. (Hawaii is pretty nice too!) / Favorite Saying / Quote? “On a long enough time line, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero” -Tyler Durden, Fight Club / / Thanks Jessica! :D

I’m sure you are all aware of Zomboy and their astonishing t-shirt designs. Well now I am lucky enough to get an interview! / Please have a read! 1. How did you come across Redbubble? / I stumbled across Redbubble quite by accident after doing a Google search. At this time I was collaborating with a friend of mine, and we decided to whack a couple of designs up there. The first design I put up was ‘Dandylion flight’. At this time I had no idea how t-shirt sales worked online, but strait away I got featured. I figured this was normal for “newbie’s” (which I have since learned is quite often the case) so really thought nothing of it. Then the sales started coming in and I thought I had struck gold – that was in July 2008. 2. What do you look for when creating a new design? / Concept is something we really try to get my head around. We like the work to mean something or evoke fond memory and a positive message if possible. Having said that there are some wonderful artists out there that create amazing ‘dark’ work, this is something zomboy is yet to explore. 3. We know Zomboy T-shirts are a collaborative effort, how did this partnership form? / The partnership started a few years ago. There is me – Stephen. I come from a 3D animation and publishing backgrond. My neighbour, John who has an IT background shared an interest in t-shirt art. We decided to create an online “brainstorming” SharePoint server, where we collaborate. The third person in this relationship is my wonderful partner Vicky. She comes from an industrial design background, and has a great sense of aesthetics. I love collaboration because it takes a life of its own, I recommend it to all artists! 4. Are there certain things that each designer does when making a t-shirt? / Vicky’s industrial design background makes for excellent colour, balance and composition. John’s IT background makes for excellent knowledge in software, plugin’s, brushes etc and setting up of collaboration tools like Sharepoint. I come from a 3D animation and publishing background so I do the 3D modeling, vectoring etc. The main success of our designs is owed to brainstorming. If one of us thinks the design needs work then we do not hold back. This is something I would like to see more on Redbubble – people collaborating and sharing their opinions. 5. How does it make you feel that your T-shirt design, Dandelion Flight is the most popular all time t-shirt on Redbubble? / To be honest I am not that excited about it. I know that may sound ungrateful, let me explain. ‘Dandylion Flight’ was 3rd from the top. It followed two designs that were taken down due to copyright issues. I felt it was wrong to remove these designs because Redbubble is all about freedom of expression. If the big studios are threatened by little old us then that tells me they are scared of us – not such a bad thing I guess. The Internet is all about freedom of expression and self publishing. The Batman culture is massive, and these people were trying to express their creativity utilizing the batman ‘icon’. This happens all the time in art, so I did not expect Redbubble to bow down to commercial pressure. It disappoints me, just like when Metallica got the shuts (kiwi word for shits) with people downloading their music. So I guess I felt robbed. It was the equivalent of Stephen Bradbury winning gold at the Olympics yeah? Kind of cool, but not that satisfying at the same time. 6. What were your inspirations when first creating this design? / The inspiration for ‘Dandylion Flight’ came from my childhood. I used to have fun with Dandelions as all kids do I think. Childhood is an excellent starting point for conceptualisation. Imagine yourself as a kid, what did you do? I used to love swinging around on a clothesline, so I created a design called ‘Merry Go Hills Hoist’ based on this concept. Its really fun to regress and capture memories. 7. Zomboy obviously makes many sales, how do you work out who takes what from the profit? / This is a collaborative effort, we work on other projects outside Redbubble, it’s a ‘give take’ relationship. You do something for me, I do something for you. There is no formal business model here. We hope to one day take zomboy and make more of a business out of it later down the track and when this happens, an appropriate business model will be formed. 8. Where else can we see your work? / Mysoti.com and Teextile.com. I had a look at a few other t-shirts sites a while ago, but found myself getting waaaaaaaay too absorbed by the whole thing, so slowed down a bit. Redbubble is such an awesome artistic platform, its really hard to take yourself away from it at times. I do plan to explore other sites later on down the track like Threadless. 9. Are there any redbubblers in particular, who you think have a unique designing style? / I really like the artist Headless, his artwork/design is really original. I always get great enjoyment from his works. His concepts are just incredible and his style stands out in my mind. Every time I look at his work I feel like I learn something about life – and that is not an easy thing to achieve. I would really like to meet that dude and just talk to him. Take a look at his stuff here if you like: http://www.redbubble.com/people/headless 10. if you had to choose your top 5 favourite pieces from 2009, what would they be? / I decided this purely on what I would wear: Roadkill t-shirt by Naf4d / AT-AT Anatomy T-Shirt by rubyred / They call it BASS T-Shirt by DieselLaws / Wattlebird Black T-Shirt by Kitsmumma / Escapism T-Shirt by Scott Robinson /
A quick look through the portfolio of Missy Miss...
A quick look through the portfolio of Missy Miss and you’re instantly confronted with classy, high impact and professional photography. / I love her work and I still drool in awe every time I view her black and white studio images. / Each image looks like it’s been soaked in adhesive gun metal grey liquid that gives a slight hint of polished sheen on the finished product. / For instance… / / / / Anyways… enough with the chitchat and on with the show… :) / 1) How did you find Red Bubble and are you enjoying this online artistic community? / / I was randomly contacting a few photographers to pick up some studio assisting work when one of the guys took a peak at my website (www.missymiss.com.au) and suggested I take a look at Red Bubble as I would find many other kindred spirits there… can’t thank him enough for the tip! I’ve found it a great source of inspiration and a very helpful and kind community to belong to. Great for someone like me just starting out and eager to show anyone and everyone what I’ve been getting up to. I love getting feedback and hearing how others read or view my work! / / 2) Describe yourself and your art… do you “live” your art or is art a separate thing in your life? / / I think my art is a life through the lens and I’ll often do a double take on a place or a face that I think would be great for a shoot and make a note or approach the person in the street/bar/café to ask if they’d like to get involved. / My art is influenced mostly by the movies in my head and a cool soundtrack. Often I will research some conceptual photographers to start with but not always. An idea can come from anywhere! I like to work within a series rather than a single image. I love the challenge they present and the way it makes me think much deeper about what I’m trying to achieve. As a result though… it’s a long time between pics… / / 3) So far, what has been your greatest artistic achievement and where are you headed, what your dreams both personally and artistically? / / Until recently I think my Poker Night series was my biggest achievement. Mainly because I survived it! It was absolute madness and I’d taken on much more than my skill set was ready for… directing eight friends over two shoots plus coordinating everything else that was involved such as props, lighting, make-up, script and roles. At the end of the night on the first shoot, the couple whose house we were using pretty much split up! They got back together by the end of the week and promised to behave for the final shoot. They did but then split up again a week or so later… for good! / I’ve really enjoyed working on the B&W series this year. I’ve decided to fix quite a few more images from these shoots to put together my first photo book through Blurb.com and hope to release this later on in the year. And a 2010 calendar through Red Bubble of course! / / 4) Who has or have been the biggest influence on you as an artist? / / The biggest influence on my photography has been James Penlidis www.jamespenlidis.com who has been my mentor and friend over the last year or so. James is well known amongst Melbourne’s comedy scene and tv/radio celebrities for his outstanding studio and location portraiture. He always gets the shot! / / 5) Name 5 people you would have over for dinner and what you would cook for them? / / David Bailey / David Lachapelle / Duane Michaels / Steven Klein / Steven Meisel / As much as I do like to cook, I think I’d get catering arranged! The Game of Kings is a collaboration bringing together Red Bubble artists from Australia and the UK. Initially starting out as a series of character-based t-shirts, GoK has expanded to include an accompanying narrative and will be spinning out into other media. The basic theme of the project is the game of chess. The initial brief was that the project’s creator, Simon Sherry, would illustrate the black side of the board, while a team of eight other artists would tackle the white. As the project gathered momentum and the members of the group shared ideas and artwork, a story began to evolve around the pieces in this celestial battleground. With the addition of Danny to the group as ‘biographer’ of this strange cast of characters, this story took on a life of its own, and everyone involved knew that the scope of the Game had grown beyond the cotton canvas. Due to the clever skills and imagination of those involved and the epic scope of the theme, the GoK group are creating a wonderful series of artworks, stories and multimedia to hopefully fire the imagination in others. The first ‘phase’ of this project are the character tees making up the board itself. Every two weeks four pieces of the board will be revealed along with a section of the story, adding another piece of the jigsaw to build a final picture. Accompanying the artwork and writing will be interviews with the people involved, adding further insight into the project, their role in it, and the thought behind their creations. Every other week, previews for the next ‘wave’ of characters will be released, along with other behind-the-scenes material to whet appetites for what’s in store. A blog, facebook page and twitter account is also online, providing fans with updates and additional extras that may not appear in the main Red Bubble profile. The Game of Kings Group on Red Bubble will open its doors in the future to accept members who want to contribute ideas, stories and art as well as compete in competitions that will stretch the boundaries of fun and excitement with prizes worth the effort. The Game of Kings is more than Tee Shirts. It’s wall art and animated story lines, vignettes and artist clashing styles against each other. It’s books and games. It’s audience participation and contribution. It’s something that we hope you can watch grow and enjoy as a whole new world opens up before your eyes in the next few months and beyond. We hope you enjoy the ride! - The GoK Team The GoK team is: Simon Sherry / Scott Robinson / thickblackoutline / rubyred / sjem / quigonjim / Jordan Clarke / Nofrillsart / LilyM / Danny

Hiya All, I have recently been asked to share this little tip regarding how i got the effect of such clear steam in my photograph “OIL BURNER” as shown….............. This is not a difficult thing to do and requires absolutely no specialized equipment other than a small LED torch or light.. I use a small bicycle light which gives off a brilliant white light with a very narrow field at reasonably close distances from the subject. Obviously the further away you move the light the wider spread of light you will recieve… Simply aim the torch or light towards the subject you wish to light (in my case it was the steam) trying not to light up anything else and you will recieve a very nice image… I shot the above image with nothing more than using a tripod, auto shot and 1/16 on the flash. The subject was i a reasonably dark room and the only lighting on the subject was from the torch which was around 10 inches away from the steam.. REMEMBER to place the light behind the steam, not infront of it.. I use the little light mainly because i find that most lights for this create to much spread therfore lightingup to much of the object which takes the impact away from the steam or smoke.. LED lights, expecially little torches etc are ideal for placing in close areas to the subject without lighting it up too much… I hope this little tip helps and if anyone has a better way then please let me know as i am always open to knew ideas and methods…. Full write up can be found in The Photographers Vault Rob ;)
