Queensland…Gods Own Country I’m Told By Joe Mortelliti But he forgot about Outback Queensland altogether as far as I’m concerned. / This part of the outback is HUGE, it goes on forever, its barren, harsh and an enormous expanse. / How big you ask, I don’t know but one morning out here we drove on and on, opening and closing gates across the track, on at 80kmph, more gates. We spot a homestead in the distance, out the front on the “driveway” is a chopper and a light plane, me thinks we must be seriously out of the way here. / After some more gates on this track we get to what looks to be the front gate. We drive through, close the gate, you always leave gates the way you found them and look at the sign on the gate, it says Devenport Downs Station and states a number that it’s just a tad short of 1 million hectares. Now if I recall rightly some countries are smaller than this. Before cutting across to this station and coming in the back way we traveled the start of the Channel Country, the area where seasonal floods that we see on TV are reported that cover vast areas. A landscape of natural waterways that look like veins. / Those seasonal rains and floods come and the waters follow these channels via places like Cooper Creek and the Diamantina River and the waters make their way down to Lake Aire some 800km away.(some refer to Lake Aire as the sink hole of Australia for this reason) / I got some good shots of the bird life around the muddy Diamantina River which are now in my portfolio, and Marion my wife got a good one of some Mudlark! Have been wanting to send this card off to the local without any luck, note the landscape. Areas of this Channel Country were simply plains of rock, gibber, stones of throwing size as far as the eye could see. At one point I saw these brown fury things sticking up and looked again to see they were kangaroos, it’s pretty hard to hide behind a 3 inch rock. I wondering what can they eat out here to survive. / Along some of these channels that cut through the gibber plains are trees that I swear have trunks that not only look rock like but feel like rock also. / Some of the channel areas are a ribbon of growth with gibber plains either side. / We finally get to “civilization” at Camerons Corner where the 3 states of Queensland, NSW and SA meet and enjoy some refreshment here at the corner shop in the middle of vast expanse…this is the pub, toilet, fuel and toilet stop on a single site, typical outback hospitality and rugged facilities / I had a run in here with the local dog, he spotted my tyre plug, a piece of felt like piping, tubing sticking out of the side of my tyre. I had a puncture earlier in the tyre wall and fixed it with the this device, but did not bother to trim off the excess. / Well this dog spots this straw shaped, felt like material sticking out of the tyre and he latches onto it GROWLING,Grunting and he is head down and bum up pulling on it…. This mongrel is going to let my bloody tyre down!. So there he is with his bum in the air and I’m about to give it a prod with my boot while I’m already yelling chosen words at him and he lets go. / The dog and I are faced off starring each other down, then bugger, he launches back at the tyre. I’m yelling giving VERY clear messages about where he should go off to in language any respecting outback dog would clearly understand. He finally lets go amid the belly laughing of all looking on. / / We climb into our 4wd and pass through the corner gate into NSW. Would I go back to this area, not in a real hurry to, but certainly worth visiting and experiencing at least once just to get an idea of how big Oz is.
