I Slammed on my brakes and left my truck running in the middle of the road when I saw this while driving on my way to work . I was thrilled that Mother Nature invited me witness and to capture this fascinating spectacle of natures display of contrasts. A view of the town of Campbell River, from the ferry “Quadra Queen” between Quadra Island and Campbell River.
Everyone on Quadra Island has watched this pair from the ferry. They have lived for many years, looking after one another in Quathiaski Cove. This year they produced 6 young, but lost them to the otters and mink who share the same shores.
Finally got to get out to take the Quadra for a run. Just a short drive out of town, 10 minutes or so to a place called Little River. This shot was done toward the very end of our small shoot, resorting to the low power outlet ‘B’ of the Quadra…..about 34Ws.
We made this shot very late in our shoot, was almost getting too dark to see without a torch. I had to crack the ISO to 200, open the aperture to f/5 and wind down the shutter to 1/15 to suck in enough ambient to record on the sensor of my ancient 5D and 17-40L. Flash power on my Quadra was almost all the way down on socket ‘B’ @ about 10 or so Watt seconds. Great little spot we found just off the road near the Earth Sanctuary at the foot of the You Yangs Ranges.
I wanted to show the basic set-up for shooting, pretty simple, one light-stand with the strobe head attached with the battery pack on the ground. The power this thing shoves out is awesome…......I can’t wait to throw my softbox and/or beauty dish on the sucker and make it really sing. But for now though, bare bulb will have to do.
At the end of our quick shoot, squeezing the last bit of remaing ambient light, the Quadra was just a dream to use….that low power outlet really comes in handy. / Info: ISI200, f/5, 1/15sec handheld. 5D 17mm with 17-40L. Quadra Ranger camera right 20 somewthing Watt seconds power…......I really don’t take notes anymore…....whatever works.
Looking across a dry landscape, he wonders if some of that wet stuff they call rain will ever return. I wanted to express a dry and arid environment, without actually showing anything of the surrounding landscape. I decided to use the sun as a back light, while lighting the farmer from the front. I shot low from about 1.5 metres from the subject and my light about 2.5metres high, and to the right a metre also, directly opposite the position of the low Winter sun. / Of coarse, looking into the sun is going to demand a fairly small aperture while staying at the 1/200th sec max sync speed of the 5D, it resulted in a f/22 @ ISO100 and 304 Watt seconds of power from the strobe….....I think that is almost equivalent to 6 speedlites. I tried this type of shot with my 550EX and I had to have it about 2 feet from the subjects face at full juice.
