I love the colours of the Australian bush. • Whitsundays Dreaming Series: Nara Inlet Nara Inlet between Hook and Whitsunday Islands. Part of the Whitsundays National Park and bordered by the Great Barrier Reef (north Qld). The sand on the beach is so fine and pure (99% silica) that NASA use it to make lenses for telescopes. The inlet offers a very sheltered anchorage for yachts. But, don’t get caught in the wrong spot on an outgoing tide or you’ll end up high and dry until the tide comes back in! On 7 January 1988 the inlet was the scene of a major ‘drug- bust’ when Customs officials and Federal Police seized the yacht Lady V and the motor launch South Passage on which illegal drugs were found. This view can be seen from the lookout on Hook Island. The walk to the top takes about 15 minutes (up) and 8 (down), it’s easy and passes through sub-tropical forest. In the steep wooded hills around the inlet, there are many rock overhangs dispaying signs of Aboriginal habitation which goes back eight thousand years. There’s one at the northern end of the inlet with Aboriginal paintings on its walls. These can be found half way along the steep 20 minute waterfall walk. The water fall only runs after rain (it’s usually not running during winter or the dry season). The Whitsundays comprise 74 islands, with just 18 inhabited; resorts offering basic to luxury accommodation. Camping is possible on many of the uninhabited islands with drop off and pick up services offered by day trip companies. I am very happy to report that the newly revamped campsite on Whitsunday has recently re-open after several years “downtime” for regeneration; it’s a magic place to spend a few days, or longer…
