Firethorn (Pyracantha) is a thorny evergreen large shrub in the family Rosaceae. They are native from southeast Europe east to southeast Asia, and are closely related to Cotoneaster, but have serrated leaf margins and numerous thorns. The plants reach up to 6 m tall and have white flowers and either red, orange, or yellow berries. The flowers are produced during late spring and early summer; the berries develop from late summer, maturing in late autumn. Pyracanthas are valuable ornamental plants, grown in gardens for their decorative flowers and fruit, often very densely borne. Their dense thorny structure makes them particularly valued in situations where an impenetrable barrier is required. The aesthetic characteristics of pyracanthas plants, in conjunction with their home security qualities, makes them a considerable alternative to artificial fences and walls.

My first photo calendar is a celebration of the fabulous colors of nature, often as close as the backyard. Each season of the year is accented in this nature tribute.

Bucks County PA is known as the artists’ county. This calendar encompasses a variety of scenes and closeups from the county. Here you’ll find bridges, a barn, fieldstone, flowers, trees, landmarks, berries…. a smattering of the beauty the county offers us.
AS is, nothing altered or edited. Does what it says on the box. A Red Admiral ( I thought a Painted Lady) butterfly attracted by a pyracantha bush, in my yard, Cumbria.

I took this photo while I was walking around my new block. If someone knows the correct botanical nomenclature please let me know..
Our recent snowstorm (very rare) brought to life many of the dull outdoor shrubs and statues in my garden. Pictured here is my Firethorn IPyracantha) in all it’s glory on the trellace above the garden gate against the rich blue New Mexico sky. I used my Canon XTi with a 28-300mm Tamron lens at ISO 100, F50, 1/400 sec., and focal length of 92.0mm. This was FEATURED in the New Mexico Group on Dec. 8,’09.
This is another shot from last year’s snow.
