Scratch, our Siamese, photographed with what would on a normal day be his dinner. Birds were shot at a local pet store and added in Photoshop. As the birds were photoraphed in cages, the bars they were behind had to be cloned out, and this took a lot of time and patience. Addition of shadows and direction of lighting effects were important factors to getting the image to look realistic.

Wind-Up Skipping Cat by karin taylor / From Animal Stuff Series / This is a collage mixed media project involving beads for the eyes, string, silver cut out card/paper for arms legs, flower petals and floral pattern on dress yellow string for fringe, various ribbons for skipping rope, material/fabric and wool, glitter for wind up key on cats back, cut out painted butterly, ink, pastel, charcoal, acrylics on canvas textured paper, also some work in adobe photoshop My friend fa is introducing her cat series so i thought i’d share wind up cat as well, something i did quite a while ago….

My British blue shorthair cat called Sapphire Blue or Saffy, for short. She just loves getting into boxes, sleeping on top of boxes etc. She is great company even when she is sleeping. I used a Canon DSLR EOS 350D with flash for this shot.

These two didn’t have names…..just their breeders names. They got called ‘puss’. A lovely Maine Coon and a Siamese. A commission that was a surprise for the clients husband. It was a joy to take the reference photos for this piece, both cats playing away, content, and then the Siamese deciding I had to play too…a game of ‘fetch’ with a shoe lace :) / Colour pencil and white gouache on mat board. 38×48cm 2004 Featured in ‘Domestic and Pedigree Cats’, ‘Coloured Pencil Art’ and ‘Cats and Dogs’ groups.

Looking for a December feline as the last pic in my 2009 Kat Kalendar (don’t know if you knew I was doing a kat kalendar; but yes, I am…), I decided to go for a mutant, as I’m into double headed Tassie Devils and stuff. So I asked the amazing Kimberly Palmer if I could use some of her awesome kitty pix to borrow some of their body parts for this strange biological experiment. In fact, no kitties were harmed in the making of this, but it’s a collage of several of Kimmie’s fuzzyface shots as a single one didn’t do the trick. I used my own shot “BOO!” for the base image… in which I asked the model to flip her head up and triggered the flash at the moment her hair reached mid-flight! I used the lasso tool to select portions of the various cat photos, and paste them over areas of the original face that corresponded structurally. I used the luminosity blending mode so the basic color and topography of the original face showed through, but I still had the textured fur of the cat segments in tact. Features like the mouth and the eyes were done with normal blend mode as these had to be unaffected by the original face. Iknew it would be next to impossible to try and import the whiskers, so I drew them with thin white brush strokes, having cloned out areas where bits of the original whiskers were still present. After lots of final tweaks using adjustment layers for adding shadows and increased light and contrast where necessary, I made several shots of the brass bell in different positions as well as the bowed ribbon, using the same studio flash as for the original portrait… this to make sure the quality and direction of the lighting was compatible. In Photoshop, I `tied’ the bells to the hair with the ribbon, adjusting the angles and scales to suit their positions in the composition. I placed lots of importance in the placement of the bells as this was a major compositional feature within the frame. Don’t know if this pic will help sell the calendar, but it was fun doing it, and a special thanks to Kimmie for the pics and all the smiles over many months! And no, I don’t really hate cats. Yiddie Kitty © Vicki Ferrari / This is Yiddie when he was a little baby, back in 1991. His ears were huge but he grew into them, and his nose grew broader as well! He was rescued by a friend from a coal mine at Collinsville, North Queensland and he was with me until 1999 when he had to be put down because of kidney disease. That was a very sad time but the joys that I experienced from him being in my life outweighed the grief of his leaving – and he is still in my heart and always will be, and I still miss him! My gorgeous monster! This is a scan from the 8X12 print in one of my early portfolios. Only basic editing done – it is as it is. Thanks for sharing Yiddie with me! Framed Print /

This is a portrait of a house cat from one of the Mornington Peninsula Wineries (25 July, 2009) who just sits around all day! For the record, I’m a dog person and I’m allergic to cats but this cat was so well behaved and just sat so still I couldn’t help my self but photograph it!
