It was so strange to catch this one just looking my way. I have tried endlessly to capture this Purple-throated Woodstar for 2 years and now this one time, he came and just sat on this branch and like he was saying “well just this once…but hurry, I’m in a rush”. And I managed to get it. And the sun was even cooperating…amazing! / /

Placed in the Top 10 in the Super! Challenge in August 2009 / Featured in Hummingbirds of the world These little guys have been so entertaining. Maybe they’re getting used to me or maybe they’re getting bolder at it. But they don’t seem to mind performing for me and I have enjoyed adding animated expressions to their behavior. Some of these are adolescent or young adults as well which probably explains the naive boldness. This Purple-throated Woodstar has not got the fully developed pinkish/purple nape. The irridescence is rather dull and there seems to be a few sequins missing. / /

This purple Nymphaea was photographed in the Orchid Garden “Taman Orkid” in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Kuala Lumpur Orchid Garden was established in 1986, covering an area of approximately 1 hectare in size. It is located at the highest point of Lake Garden and is surrounded by lush greeneries. It was set up to showcase the various species of orchid plants in this region.
