  • I often get questions about the pump house and the diving blocks at Merewether Beach so I found out a bit of info….. 1935 / At a cost of 2,600 pounds, Merewether Ocean Baths, acclaimed as the ‘largest of their kind in the State’ opened as part of the Merewether Golden Jubilee celebrations in November. There was a procession in fancy dress from the Council chambers to the baths. Considered ‘the greatest advertisement for Merewether as a residential suburb’, the new baths had been built further seaward and a little to the south of the older Merewether baths on the same rock platform. At 110 yards by 90 yards, they were ‘big enough to hold the larger swimming events’ and separated into a main pool and a children’s pool by a wide promenade. The main pool nearest the sea was 110 yards long and 55 yards wide, while the shore portion was 110 yards long and 35 yards wide. The 3,500 pounds for relief work on the baths had been paid by the NSW government. Excavation of the baths promised to yield 6,000 to 7,000 cubic yards of stone valued at 2,500 pounds. Merewether Council was seeking a further government loan to cover the construction of dressing-sheds at the baths. The new baths became central to the life of the community and prompted more people from the Lower Hunter district to visit Merewether. • / ‘Beach Series’ card by Karin Taylor / a mixed media production on canvas textured paper / ink pastel acrylic charcoal Beach Betty is a cutesy retro style blonde beach chic from the past, daring to dress in her lingerie-like one-piece with exceptionally large thunder thighs, and not giving a hoot what anyone thinks…......behind her the surf in pumpin!!!

  • The rain finally eased up toady…..probably because it was back to work after easter..lol / Anyway, I managed to get out after dinner. Went to Merewether Baths and because today was ‘cleaning day’ the pool was empty so I could actually get into it without getting too wet the water was just up to my knees I got a few pics before it was too dark. I am going to post 2 shots of the pump house, both have a very different feel about them and since one of the objects of this site is to actually sell art something I have not been successful with as of late… I wanted to put up both as they will probably appeal to different people…I hope!

  • Oil Bites / It’s ironic, we take something that exists naturally in the earth and use it to poison the planet. Detail: /

  • Newcastle Australia has lots of good bikini weather but winter is for brave. Pump Stations for ocean baths still stand at Merewether and here at Newcastle and are being restored. Also good for surfing since the waves get up to 15feet. Don’t surf in those though, they’re dangerous. Besides there’s something familiar looking about that boat top left. As is, no post or Photoshop 400d 18-250

  • But what is it choosing? / AhhhHHhh, it is a question only you can answer. This fox takes care to co-ordinate it’s clothes and fur, as I’m sure we all do with our clothes and hair.

  • Sunset at Merewether Baths. The pool was empty and I managed to get a few shots from inside it before I was told to get out.

  • Another one from Merewether Baths.

  • My very first job was pumping gas for a small Mobil Oil Station on a country highway similar to the picture I’ve created here. I worked nights enjoying the big sky, bright stars and loved the Mobil oil flying horse. Various nocturnal creatures would stop by to say hello and sniff around. My customers were mostly local farmers and country people, I knew everybody on a first name basis and never got robbed. I remember at the time gasoline was twenty five cents a gallon. / It seems we now face the end of the cheap-fossil-fuel era. It is no exaggeration to state that reliable supplies of cheap oil and natural gas underlie everything we identify as the necessities of modern life - not to mention all of its comforts and luxuries: central heating, air conditioning, cars, airplanes, electric lights, inexpensive clothing, recorded music, movies, hip-replacement surgery, national defense - you name it.
