  • Pink Mulla Mulla. I have been aiming to develop a group of macro shots documenting the wild flowers of Central Australia for some time now. I’ve never been overly excited about macro shots of flowers but I am finding it challenging to create compelling compositions in such a small amount space. Photographing flowers does however require a similar approach to landscape photography as far as compositional arrangements are concerned. I am also enjoying the use of a very shallow depth of field a new area of work that I have explored very little in the past. Here I was lucky to have a very dark background that really let the flower become the only element in the image. The available side lighting lets the shape and textures of the flower to really come forward and dominate the overall composition. • In Central Australia there are two reserves one of which is better known than the other, Uluru. The one we found more interesting, but harder to walk around because it involved climbing was Kata Tjuto. There is no open walk all around the reserve, but on a minor walk we crossed a saddle and were surprised to find this plant growing on almost bare rock on the saddle. Taken with Pentax LX camera and 26-80 mm Sigma lens on Kodachrome film.

  • Olive Pink started a botanical garden near the Todd River in Alice Springs in 1956. She worked on it with an aboriginal helper until she died in 1975. The botanical garden was taken over by the Norther Territory Government and opened to the public in 1985. One of the interesting plants in the reserve in Alice Springs. We were disappointed that at the time it did not seem to be getting much attention from either the public or local government. It was not then popular with tours as it involved a lot of walking in the open with no shade to find groups of plants which provided you with no shade. The plants were well labelled with good descriptions of natural habitat which was a great help. Taken with Pentax LX camera and Sigma 28 – 80 mm zoom lens on Kodachrome 200 film.

  • These things were very common but not very easy to get a good shot of. This ws the best of several attempts. Taken with Pentax Z1p camera and Sigma 28 – 80 mm zoom lens on Kodachrome 200 film.

  • The reserve started by Olive Pink in a dry area of Alice Springs and developed through her life, has now been taken over by the northern Territory Government. It is well sign posted for the different variety of plant which is in the collection, and we found took a full day to experience. Taken with a Pentax camera on Kodachrome 200 film
