The classic mythological beast of Greek lore, whom resides in the shadows. An allussion to the beast within the darkest recesses of us all that must be searched out, confronted, and slain. This guy actually just looks like he could use a break…. / Really it was part of my intention in this work to present the sort of monster that is melancholy; a darker beast of dimmer depths than it is often given credit for. / Original was done in watercolor and gouache media, on Arches cold-press 180lb. cotton rag.

A little spin on the old story of Narcissus. Narcissus, as you may well know, was a quite lovely Greek youth enamoured by his own image. He pined away his days staring at his own reflection, eventually growing roots in the ground- punished by the gods for his vanity, he was transformed into the Narcissus flower. Of course this is the root of modern English words like narcissist and narcissistic. / In this work I wanted to spin that old myth in a different direction. As an artist I find myself working for hours and hours, days at a time on my artwork. When I rest from my painting I find myself staring at the result, intrigued by my own work. I love painting and I’m in love with my work. Now, it’s often said that art is but an extention of the artist. If that’s the case then it goes to follow that I’m a bit of a narcissist myself, albeit of a different sort. / The joke in this piece is that it’s a self-portrait. But I’m staring down at my work, which happens to be a Narcissus flower (Narcissus poeticus, to be exact), the work being but a different reflection of myself. / The original was completed in watercolor and gouache media on Arches 180lb. cold-press cotton rag, 2007.

A fanciful depiction of the psyche of a Replicant, which has the form of a human, yet the soul of blasphemous creation, a Golem, a Frankenstein, a tormented being, anxious and deranged, knowing its time is short and its end inevitable. The spider patterning exudes the replicant’s un-empathic nature, the thing that separates them from humans. If you haven’t, check out Philip K. Dick’s Novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Mindscape is a mental or psychological scene or area of the imagination. The word is most suitable to the filed of psychology. Mindscape has two words combined in such a way that the meaning goes beyond it – Mind and Escape… It can be translated as a Mind that wants to escape or a Mind that is in route of escaping. This adventure can be in the sense of reality or in spiritual world. / Depression sufferers escape from facts, hallucinates escape from reality, psychotics and neurotics escape from many other forms of life. We usually state that they are people who require help so that they can live an ordinary life. But who is to decide what is normal and what is abnormal? If ones can see the other side of horizon, according to them they deem the facts strongly that they hold about life, oneself and reality. They believe they are the right ones who are amongst wrong people. Are you one of them? I tend to assume we all are, one way or another. A cord beats with my heart in patterns that I usually ignore. I try to synchronize to the sounds of those around and it only hurts my ears, my soul, my brain, by slow sluggish attempt to live as a “normal” person. There are many chords that flow through my being. Once I hear them I am happy if I follow their song. Other cords strangle and other connect to living energy and others are simply chains. Beat, beat, beat, my heart which thinks it is more than muscle just as my brain thinks it is more than tissue, just as my eyes believe they see, just as my touch feels it is something more than a dream of of of of of of … / What?
