  • A little spin on the old story of Narcissus. Narcissus, as you may well know, was a quite lovely Greek youth enamoured by his own image. He pined away his days staring at his own reflection, eventually growing roots in the ground- punished by the gods for his vanity, he was transformed into the Narcissus flower. Of course this is the root of modern English words like narcissist and narcissistic. / In this work I wanted to spin that old myth in a different direction. As an artist I find myself working for hours and hours, days at a time on my artwork. When I rest from my painting I find myself staring at the result, intrigued by my own work. I love painting and I’m in love with my work. Now, it’s often said that art is but an extention of the artist. If that’s the case then it goes to follow that I’m a bit of a narcissist myself, albeit of a different sort. / The joke in this piece is that it’s a self-portrait. But I’m staring down at my work, which happens to be a Narcissus flower (Narcissus poeticus, to be exact), the work being but a different reflection of myself. / The original was completed in watercolor and gouache media on Arches 180lb. cold-press cotton rag, 2007.

  • Mindscape is a mental or psychological scene or area of the imagination. The word is most suitable to the filed of psychology. Mindscape has two words combined in such a way that the meaning goes beyond it – Mind and Escape… It can be translated as a Mind that wants to escape or a Mind that is in route of escaping. This adventure can be in the sense of reality or in spiritual world. / Depression sufferers escape from facts, hallucinates escape from reality, psychotics and neurotics escape from many other forms of life. We usually state that they are people who require help so that they can live an ordinary life. But who is to decide what is normal and what is abnormal? If ones can see the other side of horizon, according to them they deem the facts strongly that they hold about life, oneself and reality. They believe they are the right ones who are amongst wrong people. Are you one of them? I tend to assume we all are, one way or another. This guy actually just looks like he could use a break…. / Really it was part of my intention in this work to present the sort of monster that is melancholy; a darker beast of dimmer depths than it is often given credit for. / Original was done in watercolor and gouache media, on Arches cold-press 180lb. cotton rag.

  • Nexus 6
    by Robert O'Neill

    US$4.32–US$98.80

A fanciful depiction of the psyche of a Replicant, which has the form of a human, yet the soul of blasphemous creation, a Golem, a Frankenstein, a tormented being, anxious and deranged, knowing its time is short and its end inevitable. The spider patterning exudes the replicant’s un-empathic nature, the thing that separates them from humans. If you haven’t, check out Philip K. Dick’s Novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. It is brilliant. See also:

  • Metaphor for a Metaphor
    by Karsten Stier

    US$3.99–US$91.20

This is the actual shape of the canvas The shape of the canvas becomes an integral part of this painting to enhance the illusion of a three dimensional object. / “Metaphor For A Metaphor” is about our predilection for categorizing everything that we experience, whether it fits into our scheme of things or not. And then, ultimately, resorting to using metaphors when we can’t.. / Hence the box which is distorted out of context… The round peg into a square hole that we seem to love the most…. • Emotional Disfiguration
    by DAViD ALLeN

    US$4.16–US$45.12

This image is more of a personal work and was generated while I was working through both the physical and psychological (more psychological) problems related to my car accident. Emotional Disfiguration was created using Photoshop. It combines three of my own photos and two drawings. The two drawings are of an eye and of a textured sphere; they are blended into the background elements representing eyes within the image. The background textures are made of three different layered and manipulated photos (close up images of natural textures). © 2008 Comments welcome. Limited edition (5) archival prints will be available soon from my web site: DAViD M. ALLeN

  • Pleasure Principle
    by H M Bascom

    US$6.65–US$152.00

When I observe a person who employs ad hominem in a discussion, I imagine that Sigmund Freud is chuckling and sucking on his cigar (no oral fixation there, eh?) that many of his theories are proved time and again by empirical observation of human behavior. My favorite psychology professor defined the user of ad hominem argument as a person whose anger is “outwardly directed toward the improper object.” He was a brilliant man who, if he were alive today, would find innumerable examples right here on the Internet. Actually, I think he would make some forum discussions and journal debates required reading. I miss you Dr. Weddle. The ID is the impulsive inner child that seeks only pleasure without any concern for the consequences of hedonistic behavior. The SUPER- EGO is that part of which accounts for morality. It is an absolute morality that does not take into account special circumstances which may require deviation from moral absolutes. The EGO is the rational part which attempts to strike a balance between the hedonistic ID and the strict SUPER- EGO. When stressed the EGO protects the human psyche by the defense mechanisms of denial, repression, or displacement.
