  • A photograph across the reservoir at Anglezarke, Lancashire. There are interesting qualities to the light in this part of the world. In this picture the light reflecting off the water has an almost metallic quality. I’ve been asked a few times what “Anglezarke” means.. it is a place in Lancashire ! The word I believe comes from the Scandinavian settlements of this region many hundreds of years ago. When the English finally conquered this region and it became part of England probably about 1000 AD they settled on the good agricultural land and gave these areas names we recognise as English.. Manchester,Preston,Bolton etc etc.. but in the places they weren’t interested in the older names survived places like Helvellen and Pen y Ghent.. and Anglezarke is also one of these older names but reputedly Scandinavian in origin. There is an ancient barn in the area that looks very much like a long boat turned upside down. Is there a similar word in any of the Scandinavian languages and what does it mean ?

  • The view south from the quarries at Anglezarke, Lancashire. There is a strong tradition of rock climbing in the area, and many of the legends of rock climbing started in this areas. If you look at the image in detail you will find the climber. The water in the far distance next to the telephone pole is one of a line of reservoirs running several miles up the valley.. and ending to the right of where this picture was taken. The bump in the distance top left is Rivington Pike.. and the ornamental gardens created as folly in Victorian times. Notice the trees in the middle distance shaped by the prevailing westerly winds.
