This little bough of purple flowers seemed to go nicely with an old Irish Blessing, a favorite prayer of mine for a long time now.
I saw this during an open, outdoor exhibit near Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia.

Psalm 139 and God’s assurances that no matter where we go, he is with us.
Daddy Bluebird took some time off this afternoon and let Mama do the hunting. He spent a long while just sitting on a branch, looking at his surroundings, and striking one impressive pose after another. He was quite the show-off.
This male Eastern bluebird was keeping a very sharp outlook near the nesting box. While Mama hunted and fed the babies, he was looking intently at his surroundings, chasing away squirrels and making sure nothing came near his babies. I love to watch him watching the skies, the ground, and everything in between. He’s got eyes like a little hawk! I know he sees me in hiding, but he’s gotten used to me now and pretty much tolerates my presence so long as I don’t make any abrupt movements. Today, I talked to him, and he cocked his tiny head in my direction, curious about the being behind the camouflage curtains.
At the moment it’s tough to see the wood for the trees. So I thought I’d just provide a bit of focus.
The Point Street Power Station in Providence, RI. Captured using an antique AGFA Clack camera with crossprocessed tungsten slide film. No photoshop manipulation – the colors are a result of using tungsten slide film in daylight and crossprocessing with C-41 chemicals. (c) Paul Lavallee 2007 /
Even dragons are not out of place in the imagination of children. The tail end of the dragon on the roof of the Providence Children’s Museum. Crossprocessing Velvia F slide film really oversaturated the red and increased the contrast. The Diana camera created a soft light leak on the top of the tail and some slight vignetting. No digital manipulation. This image is featured in the XPro – Cross Processed – Photography group. (c) Paul Lavallee 2007 /
This structure was initially constructed in 1929 as a Masonic temple, but it was never completed and it remained an eyesore to the skyline of Providence, RI for almost 80 years. It has since been restored as the Renaissance Providence Hotel. Holga image using 20 year expired AGFA film. No digital manipulation. (c) Paul Lavallee 2007 /

This jet black crow sat on this fence waiting for something. Like it new that this line of road was going to provide his next lot of food. Mannum, South Australia
This male Eastern bluebird loves to show off his catch before delivering it to the babies in the nesting box. A bright green grasshopper is his latest prize, and he’s displaying it here very proudly! I used to think the meal would be divided among the babies, but as they grow older, I think it’s one grasshopper, whole and sometimes live, down the gullet for one awaiting chick! Ravenous and sometimes raucous, babies bluebirds give their parents a full day’s work hunting up offerings for the table!
It is a daily practice of mine to try to go to Holy Hour and Mass, and God never fails me. He provides just what I need each day. There is a kind soul I see every Wednesday who quietly slips me an envelope which contains some little treasure she wants to share with me. This past Wednesday, her little care package contained these wise thoughts by St. Francis of Assisi. I thought I’d share them in hopes they will give us courage to face another day, come what may. God bless! (I took this photo in Oklahoma City at a public park where this hawk was keeping vigil over the adjoining meadow where supper was undoubtedly scurrying in the grass. The birds have no anxiety about anything; provision is always made for them; we have much to learn from them).
I thought I’d do the bluebird version of the “Golden Arches” and joined two images, one of the mother and one of the father, delivering “buggy burgers” to the little ones. Note my crude attempt at the double arches (not the best but it was fun trying). Bluebird babies, I’m happy to report, have graduated from the kiddie burger to the man-size monster loaded with calories and cholesterol.

This has long been one of my favorite prayers. There are so many times when one doesn’t know how to pray, what to pray. These words seem to fill the bill, entrusting to the loving wisdom of the Holy Spirit those issues that are too large for our small minds to fathom and our tiny hearts to carry. Here is that prayer: “O, Holy Spirit, Beloved of my soul, I adore you. Enlighten me; guide me; strengthen me; console me. Tell me what I should do. Give me your orders. I promise to submit myself to whatever you desire for me and to accept whatever you permit to happen to me. Help me only to do your will.”
Best on Full Size (767 views on 11/4/09) The male Eastern Bluebird … my favorite birdie … image captured on a bird walk in Olney, Maryland in June of ‘08 with the Nikon D40x and the 70-300mm vr Nikon lens at focal length of 300mm. Image has been cropped. Shutter was 1/320, Aperture f/5.6, exp 0.00, iso 100. Texture added in Photoshop along with some digital painting. Range and Habitat / Eastern Bluebird: Breeds east of Rockies from southeast Canada to Gulf of Mexico; winters in southern portion of breeding range. Inhabits open woodlands, clearings, farmlands, parks, orchards, gardens, fields; often seen along roadsides on utility wires and fences. INTERESTING FACTS / When approached by a predator, male Eastern Bluebirds make a song-like warning cry. If a male is not present, a female will begin to sing, hoping to attract a protective male back to the territory. / Their numbers have declined due to competition from starlings and house sparrows for nest sites. / Clutch size varies with latitude and longitude, with bluebirds farther north and farther west having larger clutches. / A group of thrushes are collectively known as a “hermitage” and a “mutation” of thrushes.
