  • How shall I go in peace and without sorrow? Nay, not without a wound in the spirit shall I leave this city. / Long were the days of pain I have spent within its walls, and long were the nights of aloneness; and who can depart from his pain and aloneness without regret? / Too many fragments of the spirit have I scattered in these streets, and too many are the children of my longing that walk naked among these hills, and I cannot withdraw from them without a burden and an ache. / It is not a garment I cast off this day, bit a skin that I tear with my own hands. / Nor is it a thought I leave behind me, but a heart made sweet with hunger and with thirst… ...These things he said in words. But much in his heart remained unsaid. For he himself could not speak his deeper secret. “The Prophet” / Kahlil Gibran / 1883-1931 This is in the artist profile in the portfolio of cbarker – Chris. At this time of year it would serve all of us well to remember that yet another year of war and conflict in so many parts of this globe rage on with godless and cruel intent. Chris Barker has a bachelor degree in photojournalism and is a returned American serviceman with more to share than this interview allows… but a little window of light into the heart of a soldier and documentarian can be read below. 1. You have some pretty extreme images on Redbubble, there are photos of high emotions in protests, arrests and to me the irony is the passive feeling ones are of the men at war in Iraq. How would you describe the diversity of your folio given your experiences to capture such moments? The diversity of my portfolio seems to stem from that instant moment, that blink that becomes etched in stone. I cannot, and will not, ever take credit for what others do, because I feel that I am a storyteller and nothing more. Photographs are a solution, so to speak, based on certain mixtures, all dependent on that given situation and your influence upon it. I believe the irony felt between the violent images of protest compared to the passive images of war is derived from my specific involvement as a soldier. When I photographed the protests, I was not there as a demonstrator, I was there as an unbiased historian. The war is a different beast all together. I was in Iraq as a soldier, as unbiased as I could manage, and the images you see appear to capture those few peaceful moments that are so difficult to hold onto because of the incessant violence and death that we were enveloped by day in and day out. I won’t argue with the irony in it, but that is the most concise way I can describe my intentions, portraying things that most people do not picture when they think of “war.” 2. You have a bachelor degree in Photojournalism, what scenes from Iraq did you want to report on but just could not use the camera? I can honestly say, as a trained Photojournalist, it is more than incredibly paining and frustrating when something of significant importance happens in a combat zone and your instinct is to pick up your camera and shoot, but you’re more recent military experience tells you that a camera is not what you should be shooting should you choose to go home by any other means than a flag draped casket. It is a gamble and when fight or flight takes hold, you fight for what little you have. I wish I could have reported on many of my experiences in Iraq, but my safety and the safety of my men, who depended on me completely, prevented such. There is so much more going on in Iraq then anyone state-side, or even abroad, realizes; good and bad. I lost a couple of good rolls of film that I wish would have made it home and I always wonder what images that acetate held, but will never know. 3. If there was one thing that you could photograph for the rest of your life (without fear of starving to death) for the fascination of it, what would it be and why? I would probably continue to travel across Africa and try to capture those fleeting moments of joy and happiness amid the great overwhelming despair that Africa has endured over the centuries. Africa is an amazing place, that has captivated my soul, filled with incredible people that can teach us important lessons in life, family and perseverance. My heart goes out to all soldiers of all nationalities (and the suits and dollars that drive these conflicts), no matter your cause… please find a way to stop killing each other! Make it this year’s Christmas wish AND New Year’s Resolution… I am praying for Peace. Thanks for the interview Chris, hope we cross internet paths again. Kathleen

Protest @ Palais starting 5pm Thursday 7th Feb (and march to St Kilda Town Hall)sign the petition @unchainstkilda.org This journal entry is about a place very close to my heart. St Kilda. Artistic, eclectic and wonderfully, culturally Melbourne. Or at least it always has been. In recent years greed had extended it’s ugly claws and seen many classic shops have to close their doors due to exorbitant rent. And now the Port Phillip Council is getting in on the act. The Council is in the process of approving a revolting retail and nightclub development in the area colloquially known as the St Kilda Triangle. Residing next to the landmark Palais building the triangle is prime, crown land – public land sorely in need of cleaning up. The locals want community space. The council however is set to approve a development which includes: Spread over five levels on this beachfront public space, there will be: 150 retail tenancies (that’s 25,000 sq m of retail space), which include 20% national chains and 50% ‘independents’ (defined by the developer as a trader with less than 10 stores). a cluster of nightclubs and music venues plus pubs, taverns, bars and restaurants (including a restaurant to train hospitality students) a multi-screen cinema complex a 90-room hotel and convention space a fitness centre an art gallery 1200 space car park public grass areas on the roof of the complex, public walkways throughout, public steps leading to Jacka Boulevard and a shop-fronted public plaza. The design calls for the demolition of a unique, 100 year old, split-level beachside promenade and the sacrifice of some of the unobstructed views from the Upper Esplanade to the beach and to the Palais Theatre and Luna Park. I can’t include a pic of the proposed design here but think ‘Chadstone by the bay.’ People of course have the right to make their own conclusion but if you are against it you really only have one chance to make your feelings felt. Believe it or not, Councillors are dismissing the 6,000+ written Triangle objections they’ve received as “not that many”. It’s time to vote with our feet. On Thursday (coming) 7th Feb a march is being held to tell the council exactly how we Melbornians feel. Following is from the Unchain St Kilda website. In a show of citizen unity assemble at the Palais Theatre at 5pm on Thursday 7 February to walk as a colourful group to the meeting at the St Kilda Town Hall, which starts at 6pm. (if you can, wear St Kilda colours of black, red and white). You can also download a postcard advertising the march for printing or emailing to friends. We have copies available for distribution also – email us if you want to help. Attend the meeting If you can’t make to the march, get to the St Kilda Town Hall by 6pm, corner of Brighton Road and Carlisle Street, St Kilda. I’ve been to some meeting already and they get pretty fired up. It’s unreal to see real community passion and inspiring and comforting to realise people give a shit. If you don’t say anything now it will be too late afterwards. This is your chance to really make a difference. I hope as many people come as possible. Bring your cameras and pens!!! And be able to tell your grand kids you helped save st kilda. For more info go to unchainstkilda.org

THE BASICS OF ART FOR ACTIVISM AND CHANGE COMMUNITY BASED ART Creative expression emerging from a NEED to collectively highlight and educate for social improvement. Involves many varied social contexts and definitions. Includes an understanding not only of geography but also history and tradition, ethnicity and dedication or belief in spirit. Includes topics/issues (but not limited to): racism, sexism, homophobia, ageism, classism, ableism and all forms of discrimination that create marginalisation in society. COMMUNITY BASED ARTISTS Concerned with the functionality of art in public arenas including community development, corrections, education, intergenerational communications, aging, environment, conflict resolution, cultural citizenship etc. Work with all media, in all disciplines, everywhere. Committed to bringing arts and education to highlight and expose the widest possible range of social conditions and challenges facing our communities. Seek to create social change on every level of society, from the most ‘personal’ to the most ‘political’. Activist Art for Leadership… How do we practice it and what style does it inhibit? Is it catching? WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT? A few thoughts… If you want to change things you do it with people not to people. Ongoing revolution. To service the greater good activist art (like all forms of expression) should be regarded according to review, peer assessment, research and budget in order to gauge it’s effectiveness in society. A crucial shift in thinking is to involve people for their abilities, what they can do, rather than build up an attitude that only aesthetic or technically sound work should be the focus or at the forefront of the revolution in an ideological sense. Artistic merit should be judged according to a clear communication of a relevant, centralised and communal message, no matter the art form or level of artistic development. Activist art is concerned with cultural and ideological democracy and the right of all to have access to services. Equal rights for one should not come at the cost of another’s rights. Activist art is concerned with promoting a community that encourages ideas and the community leaders who have the courage to put them forward. A community that takes pride in the way we treat and include those that need our help. Inclusion. Apart from enjoying the right to create art for its own sake, activists are often draw to art. Activist Artists are concerned with highlighting technocratic decision making processes… behind closed doors based on limited information and without initial intention to consult those whom the decision most affected. Rather than fearing our differences, we wish to be a people who celebrate it. Recognising diversity can give birth to creativity as much as conflict. / YET… We do not seek to be a society that fears rigorous debate. It is through the testing of ideas, through endless argument and negotiation that a community retains it’s vitality and survives. let our debates be based on mutual respect and the denial of violence. Will the people we are FORCED to rather generously pay to represent us here in the good ol’ USA … EVER … do anything more than SCREW …

Will the people we are FORCED to rather generously pay to represent us here in the good ol’ USA … EVER … do anything more than SCREW us behind our backs and hand us a teeny, tiny, little 600 dollar “economic stimulus payment” so they can say, “Oooooooo look at all we are doing for you”?? WILL THEY EVER STOP BEING SO ARROGANT???? I seriously believe … anyone who votes for any canidate from the two major parties in this country should seriously have their heads examined. But sadly on many lines of many ballots there will be no other options … and certainly no … “none ‘o these bums!” THESE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ENTRENCHED IN WASHINGTON FOR FAR TOO LONG, TAKING A SUBSTANTIAL PAYCHECK FROM THE TAXES WE PAY, WHILE FEATHERING THEIR OWN RATHER COMFORTABLE BEDS … AND DON’T GIVE ONE DAMN BIT ABOUT ANY OF US! And they are laughing their way into very nice retirements … many Federal Goverment Employees … particualrly at high levels … again people WE PAY rather well … aren’t much better. The U.S. Constitution no longer starts out “We the People” ... It now clearly reads … We the Saps, the Dopes & the Suckers! You want to hear it straighter than that … go on You Tube and listen to what George Carlin has to say about voting and the people running this country. People only nervously laugh at him now. He’s not being funny people. Not at all. Yes, some comedy is based on exageration. But he just doesn’t have to exagerate nearly as much any more. Same with Lewis Black. They don’t have to try … the absurdity of reality is rapidly surpassing that of comedy. We are in trouble. BIG trouble. Folks we are seriously getting … buggered … to be polite … at every bend in the road by these ladies and gentleman in Washington, and all the other little government seats too. The two party system has taken this once great country and ruined it … ruined at least for the majority of the honest hard working women and men struggling harder and harder every day to get by. While they have been getting more and more … we have been loosing ground since the 70’s. Yes, for over 30 years now the REAL income for the Average American Family has steadily dropped as their debt has steadily grown. In that same period REAL wages for the Average American Worker have dropped and benefits slowly disappeared. The AAF & AAW have lost ground in the same period that Corporations … have “out sourced” more … / moved entire idustries out of this country … / received more and more direct support from the Federal Government ... / received more and more concessions and breaks from the Fed … and many have recorded record profits … and that list could go on and on. OK so we are still better off then folks in a lot of places and should be very thankful for all we DO have. It is good and right to be grateful and thankful But here’s the kicker ….. THEY WANT TO TAKE THAT AWAY FROM US TOO! THEY WON’T STOP UNTIL THEY’VE BLED US DRY. WHY? THEY DON’T KNOW HOW TO DO ANYTHING ELSE AND THE REAL PEOPLE RUNNING THIS CIRCUS CAN’T SEE PAST NEXT QUARTER’S PROFIT STATEMENTS. And we are supposed to be thrilled with a 600 dollar check? We are supposed to run out and spend it like kids in a candy store? Lets really mess with their minds … take the check … cash it … convert it to gold or silver … THEN BURY IT SOMEPLACE SAFE! Well I already spent half of mine … I gave it to a firend who lost their job to help them get by. Oh well I am rambling … but I do that when I am angry … and everyone should be. They have the POWER and the MONEY, but there are a helluvalot more of us than there are of them and we need to get aggressive and start DEMANDING better! Particularly from the people who prepetuate the farce of representing us in Washington. If nothing else … at least go read some of the thoughts on votenader.org. We really don’t have to put up with this bullshit … but it’s going to take a hell of a lot of work to get something back for US. And we do have to get our butts moving on this. I started MY morning almost loosing my breakfast reading what I have posted below. This is just so sickening and WRONG. Just plain WRONG. That people we have elected and we pay salaries to would even consider such a piece of legislation is a clear example of just how little they really care about the interest of the people they claim the right to represent. I’ll correct that … It’s not WRONG … It’s OBSCENE! But THIS is business everyday in Washington …. We need to get ANGRY! We need to stand up and FIGHT! We need to say ... WE WILL NOT TOLERATE THIS ABUSE ANY MORE! And make no mistake about it … it is ABUSE! REAL ABUSE! It should be illegal, it’s certainly unethical … there’s a little word long forgotten in the Halls and Backrooms of Congress and Corporate Boardrooms. Ethics! Ethics are those little things that are supposed to remind you that while you can do just about anything you want … there are times you shouldn’t … and YOU should be the one to stop yourself. WE NEED TO SAY IN MILLIONS OF LOUD VOICES …. NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And we need to start saying it TODAY. Mind Your Business / You Will Lose All The Rights to Your Own Art / Mark Simon As you know, I usually handle the subjects in my articles with a sense of humor. That is not the case this month. I find nothing funny about the new Orphan Works legislation that is before Congress. In fact, it PISSES ME OFF! As an artist, you have to read this article or you could lose everything you’ve ever created! An Orphaned Work is any creative work of art where the artist or copyright owner has released their copyright, whether on purpose, by passage of time or by lack of proper registration. Like when parents give up their child to be an orphan, you can give up ownership in your creative work to be an orphan for others to use without your permission. If you don’t like to read long articles, you will miss incredibly important information that will affect the rest of your career as an artist. You should at least skip to the end to find the link for a fantastic interview with Brad Holland of the Illustrators Partnership about how you are about to lose ownership of your own artwork. Currently, you don’t have to register your artwork to own the copyright. You own a copyright as soon as you create something. International law also supports this. Right now, registration allows you to sue for damages, in addition to fair value. What makes me so MAD about this new legislation is that it legalized THEFT! The only people who benefit from this are those who want to make use of our creative works without paying for them, or from large companies who will run the new private copyright registries. These registries are companies that you would be forced to pay to register every single image, photo, sketch or creative work. It is currently against international law to coerce people to register their work for copyright because there are so many inherent problems with it. But because big business, like Bill Gates, can push through laws in the United States, our country is about to break with the rest of the world, again, and take your rights away. With the tens of millions of photos and pieces of artwork created each year, the bounty for forcing everyone to pay a registration fee would be enormous. We lose our rights and our creations, and someone else makes money at our expense. This includes every sketch, painting, photo, sculpture, drawing, video, song and every other type of creative endeavor. All of it is at risk! If the Orphan Works legislation passes, you and I and all creatives will lose virtually all the rights to not only our future work but to everything we’ve created over the past 34 years unless we register it with the new, untested and privately run (by the friends and cronies of the U.S. government) registries. Even then, there is no guarantee that someone wishing to steal your personal creations won’t successfully call your work an orphan work, and then legally use it for free. In short, if Congress passes this law, YOU WILL LOSE THE RIGHT TO MAKE MONEY FROM YOUR OWN CREATIONS! Why is this allowed to happen? APATHY and MONEY. Artists have apathy and corporations have money. We need to be heard in order to protect our incomes, our creations and our careers. GET OFF YOUR ASS! That means writing letters to our congressmen and representatives. That means voicing your opinion about how we need copyright protection, as we’ve had since 1976, that protects everything we create from the moment we create it. Currently, your work is copyrighted as soon as it’s created, whether you register it or not. This is the case around the world. However, an Orphan Works bill is also in the works in Europe. I was speaking recently with Roger Dean, the famed artist of the YES album covers, and he is greatly concerned with what will happen if Orphan Works bills become law. “This will devastate the livelihood of artist, photographers and designers in a number of ways.” Dean continues, “That at the behest of a few hugely rich corporations who got rich by selling art that they paid no part in the making of, the U.S. and U.K. governments are changing the copyright laws to protect the infringer instead of the creator. This is unjust, culturally destructive and commercial lunacy. This will not just hurt millions of artists around the world.” “On the other side of the coin,” Dean argues, “what argument will a U.S. court have with a Chinese company that insists it did its research in China and found nothing? If the cost of this is onerous for a U.S. based artist, what will it be like for artists and small businesses in emergent economies?” If an artist, whose work is as famous as Roger Dean’s, is concerned with this legislation, it should be of great concern for all of us. The people, associations and companies behind the Orphan Works bill state that orphaned works have no value. If that were true, no one would want them. However, these same companies DO WANT your work, they just don’t want to pay for it. If someone wants something, IT HAS VALUE. It’s pretty simple. Some major artist and photography associations, or I should say the managers of the associations, support this bill. The reason they support is that they will operate some of the registries and stand to make a lot of money. Some have already been given millions of dollars by the Library of Congress. Follow the money and you will see why some groups support this bill of legalized theft of everything you have ever created. Corbis and Getty Images have opposed the Bill but have a lobbyist in Washington who is negotiating behind closed doors for favorable concessions to them. They are large stock photo and stock art companies. They sell art and photos inexpensively and are trying to build giant royalty-free databases. Do you see how they could benefit from considering most art in the world orphans? Do you know who owns Corbis? Bill Gates. He doesn’t do anything unless it can make a huge amount of money. For years we’ve heard of Hollywood fighting with China to protect the copyrights and income for distributing feature films from pirated DVDs. Our government has worked with the film studios to protect their investment. Individuals in our government are NOW WORKING AGAINST US by allowing our own citizens TO STEAL OUR CREATIVE WORKS. It will be easy for them to get away with it unless we make ourselves heard. Your calls and letters do work. I’ve been involved with many instances of a single letter making a difference in public policy. Tens of thousands of calls and letters help even more. This is not empty talk. I have written letters to my congressmen and I will do so again. I do what I can to let every creator know about terrible legislation like this…thus you are reading articles like this one and you can listen to interviews I’ve posted online. CONTACT YOUR LEGISLATOR: / Go to http://www.usa.gov/Contact/Elected.shtml to quickly find the phone number, address, e-mail of every U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative, Governor and State Legislator. Forward this article to every creator you know and urge them to take a moment to protect their very livelihood. I am giving everyone the right to reprint this article in any form to help spread the word to protect our creative rights. Instead of sitting around watching TV tonight, TiVo that show tonight, write a letter make yourself heard. Letters to our government officials don’t have to be long, but they should be heartfelt. A good story helps. Tell them who you are, how this legislation negatively affects you and that you want them to vote against the Orphan Works legislation. It’s that easy! If you don’t, you will have only yourself to blame when you see other people making money from your art and you don’t see a dime. Spider-Man comic artist Alex Saviuk is also concerned about the loss of copyright protection. “When I found out all the negative aspects of the new legislation, it would almost behoove us to want to do something else for a living,” says Saviuk. “If we would have to register with all the different companies, we would never be able to make a living.” “It would impossible for me to register all my art,” continues Saviuk. “It would put me out of business.” You can listen to my complete interview with Alex online at http://www.SellYourTvConceptNow.com/orphan.html. Think this doesn’t apply to you? Maybe you don’t license your artwork? How about this? Photos on the internet could be orphaned. With tens of millions of photos shared online with services like Flickr, Shutterfly and Snapfish, there is a huge opportunity unauthorized use of your photos…legally. You could see photos you take of your family and kids or of a family vacation used in a magazine or newspaper without your permission or payment to you. You would have to pay to register your photos, all of them, in every new registry to protect them. Say the average person takes 300 photos per year (I take a lot more than that). If a registry only charges $5 per image, that is a whopping $1,500 to protect your photos that are protected automatically in the current laws. If there are 3 registries, protecting your images could cost an amazing $4,500. Not to mention the time it would take to register every photo you take. Plus, you will also have to place your copyright sign on every photo. That’s not including all your art, sketches, paintings, 3D models, animations, etc. Do you really have all that extra time and money? Plus, even if you do register, the people stealing your work can still claim it was orphaned and unless you fight them, they win. Even if you win, you may not make back your legal fees. It gets even better. Anyone can submit images, including your images. They would then be excused from any liability for infringement (also known as THEFT) unless the legitimate rights owner (you) responds within a certain period of time to grant or deny permission to use your work. That means you will also have to look through every image in every registry all the time to make sure someone else is not stealing and registering your art. You could actually end up illegally using your own artwork if someone else registers it. DOES ANYONE SEE A PROBLEM WITH THIS? Do you think the U.S. Copyright Office is here to protect you from this legislation? Think again. Brad Holland of the Illustrator’s Partnership shares his notes from a recent meeting with General Counsel of the Copyright Office. Holland: “If a user can’t find a registered work at the Copyright Office, hasn’t the Copyright Office facilitated the creation of an orphaned work?” Carson: “Copyright owners will have to register their images with private registries.” Holland: “But what if I exercise my exclusive right of copyright and choose not to register?” Carson: “If you want to go ahead and create an orphan work, be my guest!” This cavalier and disrespectful dialogue should have you seeing red. Who the hell does he think he is? Carson should be fired and RUN OUT OF WASHINGTON! None of this could happen with our current laws. Our current laws work and they protect us and our creations. The only people who will benefit from the copyright law change are those who can’t create work on their own or companies who stand to make a lot of money from using our works of art. They pay contributions to Congressmen, which is why they get what they want. We need to stand up and be heard. Every one of you needs to write your Senators and Representatives. We have to protect our livelihoods. It’s that serious. Plus, the technologies being developed for locating visual art don’t work well enough. On March 13, 2008, PicScout, one of the softwares used in the registries, stated to the House IP subcommittee: “Our technology can match images, or partial information of an image with 99% success.” A 1% margin of error is huge when you consider the millions of searches performed for art every day. That means for every million searches, 10,000 images could be orphaned. Plus, this only takes into account images registered on their system. If you have registered all your work on another system, they won’t be searched here and even though you may have spent thousands of dollars registering your creations, a new or unused directory could orphan everything you’ve ever created. This is just one of the many reasons why INTERNATIONAL LAW FORBIDS COERCED REGISTRATION as a condition of protecting your copyright. The United States is about to break international law by making us register our works. The people behind the bill say it’s not forced registration, but you won’t have any rights unless you register. THIS IS SIMANTICS! Of course, this is forced registration and we can’t stand for it! There many, many other problems with the Orphan Works legislation. As a creator, YOU MUST understand what is going on. For additional information on Orphan Works developments, go to the IPA Orphan Works Resource Page for Artists: / http://www.illustratorspartnership.org/01_topics/article.php?searchterm=00185. This is not something that is going to go away easily. We need to be vocal NOW! This legislation has been beaten or delayed for the past 2 years and they will keep trying until it passes. This is no time to be quiet and see what happens. What will happen depends on you. Send e-mails and call your congressmen. Ownership of your own creations depends on it. Roger Dean sums this up well, “Where are the colleges and Universities in all this? Has the whole world gone to sleep?” GET ON ORPHAN WORKS E-MAIL LIST: / To be notified of the latest information on the Orphan Works bill and when we should contact our legislators, send an e-mail to illustratorspartnership@cnymail.com and ask to be added to the Orphan Works list. This photo was taken as I was heading out the door to catch a flight to LAX, then on to Dublin. I have had such an interesting journey so far, as I thought I would be staying in Swords, but have ended up in Skerries until Sunday, then Clontarf after that. I’ll write more about my misadventures soon. I was able to attend a protest on behalf of Shell to Sea at the GPO in Dublin on Saturday, the 13th, not many hours after my arrival. Getting to Tara at this point may prove difficult, but just being in Ireland is a blessing in and of itself, as I feel that this is the last place of true Magick left on our planet! Oh, what a feeling to connect on such a cellular level!!!

Ok.. I’m really happy, surprised and excited once more. Just saw that I’m a new challenge winner once again / This What Inspires you? challenge hosted by the Prize Challenges!! group is one that speaks volumes to me, and it seems that RB artists took notice of it. / The winning image Arlington West 2007, Santa Barbara, California portrays an ongoin display of the casualties in Iraq on East Beach in Santa Barbara, to protest against the war in Iraq, and increase the public awareness regarding the military and political fallout of staying there. Each Sunday morning thousands of crosses, as the number of the fallen, for that day, are placed in the sand and volunteers are providing the public with up to the moment information on casualties plus individual stories on the fallen. This image was taken at memorial day 2007 as a tribute and memorial and as a cry for peace… Yes, I am inspired by dedicated people and their efforts to restore peace and humanity back… Thank you all for your support, votes and appreciation, and to the Prize Challenges!! group hosts for this wonderful challenge . It means a lot to me.

I have great news. This is a national effort, not just in California. Help overturn Prop 8, the ban on Gay marriage. This has also passed in Arizona & Florida! It will be held at your “CITY HALL” Please visit Join The Impact for more information and locations in your state and help us fight against DISCRIMINATION AND INEQUALITY!!! Protest Location By State Here Just to name a few: California – San Diego | Los Angeles | Bakersfield | Sacramento | San Francisco | San Jose | Moreno Valley Colorado – Denver; Iowa – Des Moines | Iowa City; Florida – Jacksonville | Miami | Orlando; Massachusetts – Boston | Northampton; New York – Syracuse | Albany | New York City; Utah – Salt Lake City; New Jersey – Newark; Arizona – Phoenix They have put together a NATIONAL PROTEST and start a mobilized movement for equality! When we all come together as one voice on November 15th, we will show the nation that we can do more than just talk, we can act! We won’t solve everything in one protest, but we will fuel the fire to a conversation that can not be silenced! If we stop talking about equality for all, then we will lose the battle. If we allow others to stop talking about it, then we will lose. Hate is not the lack of love, it’s the fear of that which we do not know. This protest along with many others gives us the chance to build on the conversation and educate the masses. It’s very simple: Infiltrate, Educate, and STOP HATE! HATERS NOT WELCOMED!!! JOIN ME :) / Come on Ellen, it has your name all over it lolGet you camera out and go to NEWARK!!!

I was on the bub for 6 months before I sold my first card (thanks Mar ) but things seem to be selling quite regularly now. I always find it amazing when someone appreciates a work enough to purchase it and put it on their wall so heartfelt thanks to everyone that has. This week I sold: A mounted print of Would you build a desal plant here . 100% of profits on this one were to go to the your water your say action group that was fighting the desal plant but when costs were awarded against them on the court battle they fought to do just that they were forced to close. Their websites still up though so I’ll make enquiries and make sure it goes to the right place. Calendar sales are continueing to go well. Basically I bought a whole heap to show around so people could actually see what they’re getting. I’ve almost covered my cost price now and figure whatever is left over will be good for chrissy presents. This week I sold another Sunrise – Sunset: The Prom 2009 my first Mt Buffalo 2009 calendar Another Australian Alps 2009 Another Prom 2009 horizontal and my first Victorian Waterfalls 2009 and also got a few features: Sunburst over Mt Feathertop and the Niggerheads was featured in Seasonal Scapes and Alpine Australia (yes I’m the mod for alpine australia but forgive me for an occassional indulgence) Cement Creek was featured in ALL COUNTRIES – Streams, Brooks, Creeks, Rivers, Ponds & Lakes Speaking of which this sunday there is a rally in Warburton to protest the planned logging of this beautiful water catchment area. Details can be found here Thanks as always Trav

Hello fellow Bubblers, / Recently, I saw someone had entered a forum discussing “who is buying Redbubble products”. I too am interested in the topic, particularly because I want to know who is looking at the work here. Is the general public spending time looking through the thousands of profiles, or are we Bubblers in our own world just massaging each others egos? Either way, what we do here seeps into the world. Even if it is just imprinted somewhere on humanity’s psyche. / I am primarily here to spread my arts “message of the day”. I am not concerned with selling anything. In fact I have been toying with the idea of turning all of my images over to the public. Don’t get me wrong, getting paid would be a well accepted byproduct of my true intentions. / The core of this journal entry is to call all artist to join me in finding your voice. You already have the power to get people’s attention via an image. Take that power and expound on it by giving it a message. Do not be afraid to make a statement. I well know what it means to hold your tongue for fear of retribution. I own and operate a sign shop in a small American rural town. Our population is just less than 10,000 and mostly white christians. Open your mouth about certain issues around here and you will find yourself without work. It has taken me some time to get to a place that I can express myself, as myself. / I, for my politics, have not been a big hit with the gallery owners. I pick and choose who I approach. It is the gallery owners who should be shamed, for putting the buck before their balls. If they championed artist who used their voices rather than cater to Decor shoppers, who want something new for over the couch, then more artists would be less afraid to make issue driven art. / I liken being an artist to being a psychic medium. It is a gift to be able to channel a creative understanding of the world. I am calling you to be responsible to that gift. There are many here who work tirelessly, stretching the limits, to push the big rock toward awareness ( you know who you are ), and there are a lot of cute, safe pictures. I am not saying there is no place for cute nor am I saying that a blasting protest piece belongs everywhere. I am merely saying you have a voice. Use it or lose it… Sam Dantone 01-20-09 /

  • My Tank Man Shirt is fast becoming my fastest selling RedBubble item. With the added interest in the 20th Anniversary it seems that people are finding the shirt on RedBubble and want to wear a reminder of the brave act of a lone individual back in June 1989. Thanks to all those that have made a purchase, much appreciated, and I’m sure that Tank Man, whoever and wherever he may be, would be quite humbled by all the fuss. Mark

Hello Fellow Bubblers, / I hope all is well with everyone here this evening/morning/afternoon etc (where ever you are today). Well, ho…

Hello Fellow Bubblers, / I hope all is well with everyone here this evening/morning/afternoon etc (where ever you are today). Well, hopefully, for some of you, you should now know that I am a keen nature/wildlife lover and would at least try my best to protect any animal in existence today that I could from being culled, hunted down or even harmed for they cannot fend for themselves in the way that we as Human Beings can. They need our help and our voices to say, STOP !! Did you know that Idaho officials plan to sell an estimated 70,000 permits to hunt and kill wolves in the Gem State? That’s 70 wolf-killing permits for each of the 1,000 wolves estimated to live in Idaho. Talk about overkill! Sounds awful, right? Fortunately, there’s something we can do to help. Ashley Judd (actress and activist) and Defenders of Wildlife have just released a new video to encourage folks to help stop Idaho’s deadly wolf hunts. Please take a moment to watch it online at: http://www.defenders.org/savewolves Once you’ve seen the video, I hope you’ll do what I did and send President Obama a message urging him to restore Endangered Species Act protections for wolves in Idaho and Montana. It wasn’t so long ago that wolves were rescued from extinction in the northern Rockies. But that amazing accomplishment is now threatened by the reckless actions of officials in Idaho. Under Idaho’s wolf plan, more than 500 wolves could be killed over the next two years. But the true results of the state’s plans may be even worse. Idaho’s legislature has said it wants to remove all wolves from the state by whatever means necessary, and Governor Butch Otter literally howled with delight when President Obama’s Interior Secretary Ken Salazar eliminated Endangered Species Act protections for wolves earlier this year. Governor Otter has even promised to hunt wolves himself. Unless we stop the hunt, hundreds of wolves could be killed, with orphaned wolf pups - unable to hunt for themselves - left to starve to death during the brutal winter months. If you care about animals like I do, I hope you’ll take just a few moments out of your day to watch the video and send the president a message online at: http://www.defenders.org/savewolves The plan is to raise 150,000 signatures before anyone will take notice. / We are now at 116,263, so will still needs lots, lots more to get some action done about this. Thanks for helping me speak out for America’s wildlife! / From a fellow Brit, trying to Make a Difference. / Please check out my Public Profile page for the link to my Care2 profile – Make a Difference. Hope to see you join me there to Make A Difference. We are losing a lot of our wildlife here in the UK, besides those housed in the zoological gardens around our country etc, so I am trying to Make A Difference to the rest of the world (or at least try. I cannot do it alone obviously) with the help of the rest of you guys. / These animals belong on this planet just as much as we do. Lets get together and try and help save these beautiful animals and more !!! Apologies for the long note (mostly copy and pasted from http://www.defenders.org/), but I needed to get the point across. Thanks to Defenders of Wildlife for this. A website that I follow quite regular. Also, my apologies for getting this out to those groups they do not want to see this. / I feel that I have kept this away from those groups that are not animal/nature/wildlife related etc . if not, my apologies Thanks again for taking note. Jay

  • USA - Peace, Protest and Parades

When over in the USA, earlier in the year, I had the unexpected privilege to come across quiet a few different street related activities in my travels. I thought that I would finally take the opportunity to journal about them. The first opportunity came to me as I travelled on the road less travelled through the centre of Utah. As I entered the town of Ephram on the Saturday morning of the Memorial day weekend I discovered the roads before me blocked by police. My first thought was perhaps just a little bit related to the fact that they may be after me but the diversion was in place for the local Scandinavian Heritage Festival – it made me wonder how many Scandinavians are in Utah. In New York I came across a small protest near Times Square. Interestingly, and somewhat naively I thought, it was brave to see Palestinians protest in the heart of a very Jewish city. when I approached I saw that people from both faiths were there to support the notion of a state of Israil that wasn’t focussed on Zionist principals but rather a broad and inclusive land for all people. Jewish people stood side by side with Palestinians. Onwards to northern California I had once again the fortune to trip across another street parade celebrating the queen of the town of Ferndale. It’s a wonderful town that’s off the beaten track and if I had a green card I could see myself living there – and perhaps watching the street parade one Saturday morning. In the last few days of my holiday were in San Francisco. Coincidence once played a strong part as I stayed in a hotel on the edge of Chinatown – and a place remembering the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre. The news in the last few days has been focussed on the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. An event that had people dancing in the streets and gathering in celebration. It made me think about those I came across in my travels who gather in celebration today and those who still protest injustices in this world.
