One of the blessings of agoraphobia – and yes, there are a few – is that it gifts you with a finely tuned awareness of safe spaces. Watching life pass by my porch was both a tantalising and yet devastating reminder of what I was unable to embrace. I couldn’t leave my house for an appallingly long time, and I’m still dealing with the intimacy that encompasses reconnecting with people. I still have a lot to learn.

This is about political, sexual, and other abuses, and how we are compelled to deal with these issues and perceive them. It is also about my love of art and how it has kept me alive through the years, and hopefully, will continue to do so…if I get lucky. Written for What Moves You: “BCLW” “BCtranspo”

I met my partner and soulmate John on the internet almost four years ago, and we lived a distance apart. He was having a difficult time emotionally, so I wrote this poem for him….
There is good pain and bad pain, productive pain and unproductive pain. Which kind of pain are you experiencing and which kind do you wa…
I wrote this at a very difficult time in my life, during one of the deepest and longest depressions I had ever experienced; and there have been several. I submit it here in the hope it will help someone else. One of the most difficult things for me to come to terms with regarding my depression (some of it chemical), was that at times I was making choices that actually prolonged and reinforced the depression. If you would have asked me, I would have said, “What do you mean, I’m doing everything I know how to do?” I didn’t know I had to risk doing some things differently in order to see a positive outcome or change. When I most wanted to do nothing, I needed to do something, anything to create movement and possibility. My mom used to say to me, “Just get up and go empty the dishwasher while we talk.” I would go and put away dishes and I was slowly on my way for the day. It didn’t matter how fast I moved, just that I did! Every day I had to make that choice, sometimes every moment, and I still have those choices to make. I also had to make those choices about relationships and risk getting hurt again. I remember asking someone the question, “Who in their right mind would open themselves up, and risk the possibility and the pain that no one will be there?” At the time that risk seemed crazy and irrational to me. My safety and self-protection made more sense. I later saw the error in my thinking and when I was ready, started taking small steps toward relationship. All of that to say, this is what I learned and have expressed in my writing – Journey of Desire. When we fear getting hurt and and erect self-protective walls, we deceive ourselves into believing we are safe from pain. The truth is when we protect ourselves, we choose the pain of loneliness and depression, instead of the pain that comes in relationship or loss. Either way we feel pain. The question then is not will we feel pain, it is which kind of pain do we want?
