For the life of me I could not find any more info on this Protea species. The only info we got was from the owner of the Wittkoppen Fourways Indigenous Nursery that told us that this little Proteas name was Ivy. / Taschja could not resist it and bought herself one to plant in her garden

  • WINNER OF A CHALLENGE IN THE GROUP:Proteas, Leucadendron, Leucospermum, Orothamnus & Serruria / FEATURED IN THE GROUP: Proteas, Leucadendron, Leucospermum, Orothamnus & Serruria The Protea on the left in the front of this capture is the Waratah from Australia and the Protea right to the back (in soft focus) is the King Protea of South Africa. As I have priviously stated Australia can claim the Waratah as their own proteacae. This is why I call this capture Two Worlds / Information on the Waratah: / Waratah (Telopea) is a genus of five species of large shrubs or small trees in the Proteaceae, native to the southeastern parts of Australia (New South Wales and Victoria) and Tasmania. / The generic name Telopea is derived from the Greek ‘telopos’, meaning ‘seen from afar’, and refers to the great distance from which the crimson flowers are discernible. The specific name speciosissima is the superlative of the Latin adjective ‘speciosus’, meaning ‘beautiful’ or ‘handsome’. ‘Waratah’, the Aboriginal name for the species, was adopted by early settlers at Port Jackson. / Camera: Canon 400D / Lens: Canon Macro 100mm

  • I so love proteas, i take the chance to photograph them as much as i can, they are originally from South Africa, I have a few planted in my aussie paddock and i call that patch South Africa…lol..i did have about 30 of them, some have died because of the drought here and a few were eaten by my neighbours sheep that kept getting into our yard..lol.. / There are a few left and i am eagerly watching them as there are a few flowers about to appear. • FEATURED IN THE GROUP: In the Pink The King protea was originally from the Cape Town area of South Africa. It is actually the national flower of South Africa. Now King proteas can be found all over the world where the atmosphere is dry and the soil has good drainage. It can even be found on Maui. / The flower of the king protea can get to be 12 inches across. On the outside it has many stiff, pointed, narrow bracts, or petals, that give it the appearance of a cup. The bottom half of the petals start out cream colored or yellow, which turns into bright pink or velvet red on the top half. Inside the cup is a mass of white stamen about 1-2 inches long which all bend towards the center. Proteas live in a fragile environment. Of the 370 protea species, about 120 of them are listed as endangered. / Camera: Canon 400D / Lens: Canon Macro 100mm
