Acrylic on Wood (32” X 23”) – I began this after the Columbine tragedy in 1999. Attempting to portray the grim reality of many of our youth nowadays. To illustrate the growing need for all of us recognize the ills that continues to permeate throughout our schools. To urge those in position to make a difference to become more aware of the dark and profoundly disturbed psychological makeup of a certain breed of students who continue to conclude there is no escape but through senseless violence. Government leaders, (national and local), school administrators and counselors, classmates and parents – need to increase their vigilance and devote more time and energy towards developing a deeper understanding of the unseen pressures, destructive influences, and sometimes traumatic circumstances which challenge much of our youth today.

This image reminds me that no matter how turbulent life becomes, the good God is our stronghold and our refuge, our only security.

Sometimes, for whatever reason, artists find their work being used without permission. Recently this happened to a collaborative work I did with Helen McLean. Let me share with you how we handled it. Randy posted this journal entry and I noticed that there was a picture of me on the invitation. “that’s odd” I thought. Not knowing how it got there, my first stop was to check with Helen, who I had collaborated with on the image to find out if she had given permission for it’s use. I also asked Randy who had posted the journal, if he knew anything. We all drew a blank but Randy very helpfully put us in touch with the organizer of the event. Before we did anything else we thought about how this might have happened. The organizer was most probably provided with the image and had no idea we owned it. In fact, even the person who supplied it may have been unaware it was covered by copyright. We also realized that had we been asked, we almost certainly would have given permission for it’s use with a credit and link. With all this in mind, we sent a polite email which presumed innocence and provided the appropriate evidence of ownership. Hello David, I’m writing to you regarding an image which appears on your site http://www.definitelysuperior.com/exhibitions.html and on your invitations. I have attached a screen shot of the site where it is shown and a copy of the invitation. This image is of me, as taken by photographer Helen McLean. We have conjoined rights to the image and neither of us remembers giving permission for it to be used in this manner. I realize you may not have known this when it was published and used on your invitations. I have attached the full sized version (with an appropriate watermark and minus any post processing) to this email to verify I own the source copy. Helen and I are happy for the image to be used if we are credited as photographer and model with a link to “http://www.redbubble.com/search/helenjocollab”. Otherwise, I am requesting that it be taken down and that the invitation be changed to remove it so that any more printed do not use this image. Thank you very much for your assistance with this, and I look forward to your reply at your earliest convenience. Jo O’Brien & Helen McLean What Happened Next? We got a lovely email back apologizing for the use of the image, explaining how it had come to appear on the site and with a promise to update the site to include a credit and link to our work. It had been an honest mistake that they were more than happy to correct. What did we learn? You don’t need to be angry and demanding to work things out People can genuinely be unaware they are infringing copyright People can actually be reasonable, rational and helpful A negative can become a positive with the right attitude Our image with a link to our other work is now out there on the internet, reaching a niche market and gaining exposure for our work.

The Pack Charcoal, conte and paint washes on paper loaded into Photoshop and formatted. A work from an exhibition of works on paper entitled Behind the Mask. This is about the street scene and the companionship or ‘mateship’ of the pack. The male pack ignites the tough masculine bravado giving the individual a sense of power and control to the rebellious spirit of youth. An escape into chemical heaven relieves the pain of reality, of crushed ambitions and a feeling of uselessness. Our prisons are full of seemingly lost young males led along by the often dangerous pack mentality.

This was the first time this horse was in harness out in public, we were at an old time Threshing Bee. He’d never seen a big steam engine tractor, a crowd of people, or heard the steam engine blow it’s whistle. He was having a time here, getting his tongue under the bit again…he had a lot to learn that day, but he learned it very well, he was so calm and peaceful by the end of the day. His mate helped, you can see how calm she is! It was wonderful to see the way this teamster handled these horses, and to see the horses so content about doing their jobs. I grew up with my father being diagnosed as bipolar and under treatment for that disease. However, the real diagnoses turned out to be that the disease was schizophrenia. This was not learned until spending 18yrs under that roof watching the emotional bombs go off around me. I watched him change personalities with each new and incorrect medication provided. Some of which are no, longer on the market because of the suicides that occurred in patients who took them. A counselor once asked me to put my father in the chair and tell him all you want to tell him. My reply was quite simple: “There are not enough chairs in the room!” I have been fortunate that I did not get schizophrenia, as there, was a good chance it could have been passed to me. I watched the pain it caused him inwardly to not be able to get better. I have healed mostly, from all the blazing, images burned into my mind over growing up with walking around mind fields. This is again because he was on the wrong medications & he could not help it. My diagnosis is that I have the following from my childhood: Posttraumatic stress disorder1 (abbreviated PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to one or more traumatic events that threatened or caused great physical harm. / It is a severe and ongoing emotional reaction to an extreme psychological trauma.[3] This stressor may involve someone’s actual death, a threat to the patient’s or someone else’s life, serious physical injury, an unwanted sexual act, or a threat to physical or psychological integrity,[1] overwhelming psychological defenses. The other side is that without him I would not be stepping behind or in front of the camera. Break down of picture elements: The hammer represents the constant tension that I felt. The cowboy hat is due to my father loved westerns and many of which were watched on b&w TV. The look being portrayed is being paranoid and perhaps hearing something not there. The TV is not in on a channel because focusing is hard for a schizophrenic mind and it could be there is an image there to thier mind.
