Hello Bubblers! I am a fond user of Paintshop Pro 7, which I have had for several years now and it seems to do most things I want it to. Everyone on this site seems to use Adobe’s offering though and I was wondering if anyone has had experience of using both packages? I am thinking about upgrading to the latest version of Paintshop Pro, but I’m wondering if Photoshop could be a better choice? Please share your thoughts!

Ok, so here’s the thing. I’ve been competing at a site called Digital Image Cafe for about 15 months now, and in the course of that time I’ve won a few prizes. I’ve got two boxes here with PC versions of Corel Paint Shop Pro PHOTO XI ....and can’t actually spare the space or ram on my computer to run it. Plus, my husband has this bad habit of throwing things out that are sitting around gathering dust….lucky I’m still here, actually! I’d hate for them to be wasted. Here’s what I propose: If anyone here wants to have one of these, I’ll give them both away…..post a photo here to prove how much you need it…..I’ll ask some of my friends to help me judge. The photos have to be loaded into Redbubble and for sale. To link it to here, go to the photo you want to share, right click on it, then go to properties. Drag your mouse over the url where it says Location, and make sure you get it all, including the ending extension, in most cases jpg, then add an exclamation mark at the start and the end ! / Paste that into the comment, and you should see your photo. Competition will end on Feb 29, 7pm Eastern STANDARD time – AUS, (not daylight saving time) and I’ll post them anywhere in the world, surface mail….no correspondence will be entered into, so don’t bmail me about this, put all your questions and photos here, please. I’m looking for creativity, but you also need to show that you don’t have a decent editing program….which is why you need this one. Feel free to tell all your friends

What i don’t get and am constantly amazed at, is the selfish, ignorant and head-in-the-sand attitude by some here on RB. If you went off and started up your own website or business and called it something preposterous (or technically illegal), you would be completely in your rights to promote yourself and/or go through the courts defending a made up and non affiliated name to your hearts content. What you have here though, is a COMMUNITY of people, ranging from the totally inept to the extremely pro, but ultimately this site is a community site that sells stuff, and we can all see and interact with each other (get it!). By all means have as many groups as you like and let them be into things like the colour ‘RED’, or Still Life, or Left Handed Tossers, but how totally inappropriate is it to create any group with fictitious ‘industry sounding’ credentials, that are not affiliated to anyone or anything, and then set yourselves up as a bone fide organisation, that has the pretensions of credibility and in turn self promote and judge others work, based on those supposed ‘industry sounding’ credentials. The fact that anyone here on RB would even consider having pretentious credentials after their name and how other people here may feel about this self serving attitude, just absolutely blows my mind. If you want credentials, then EARN them in the REAL world where it’s tough, dirty, but when you get them, you just might deserve them, not bought over the Internet like one of those online degrees in Nail Varnishing. DISCLAIMER: / And this is not pointed at any particular group, but at anyone with the laziness and self indulgence to take the short cut to the supposed top, by setting up any group with fictitious ‘industry sounding’ credentials, that are in fact just snake oil and mean nothing in the real world, or maybe they should be used in ‘Second Life’ where you can make believe anything, so i’m told (;->

  • How to turn Pro Overnight - how I quit my day job and became a professional photographer
    by Pamela Inverarity

Have a baby, move house and get divorced at the same time. You might also like to begin a new job and come out of the closet, just to get everything over and done with at once. Kaz Cooke, the little book of stress Apart from the closet bit (pretty certain I’m not in one, although I suppose I could just be in denial) it seems I’m streaks ahead of the pack when it comes to creating stress in my life. Never content to just follow the same mundane advice as the unwashed masses, I’ve even come up with my own one-ups on the concept – I didn’t just move house, I moved country, and moved house four times. I didn’t just get a new job, I started my own small business, in an area where I had no formal training or professional experience, so I really had very little idea what I was doing or getting myself in for. Am I just a tad insane, I hear you ask? Good question. Certainly at the end of my marriage I was very depressed, but it might be a bit wise to not rake over that… Here’s how I became a professional photographer. It all started with a printer. No, wait… lets start at the beginning. Step 1, the slowly developing love of photography. It all started when I was little and loved looking at the pictures in National Geographic. From an early age it was clear that I was very good at drawing and painting things, so I was always very much encouraged. But I didn’t have a good background to be an artist. I had no idea about the workings of the art world at all, nor did anyone around me. Being an animal and nature loving person, my inspiration came mainly from the photography in dad’s National Geographic Magazines, which I faithfully reproduced in acrylics and watercolours. Ironic really, spending all that time trying to get my paintings to look like photographs. These days I’m rather happy when my photographs turn out looking like paintings. I also longed to travel, have adventures and see the world. After actually reading an article with the most amazing photograpy about arctic wolves, I was convinced that the best job in the world had to be photographer for National Geographic. I entertained this idea for a while, but eventually figured I was being unrealistic. Life went on. I graduated from university with honours in social anthropolgy, as one does when one’s talents are clearly in the fine arts and hard sciences. This was because I secretly wanted to be Indiana Jones, and after finding out that archaeology was a strange and in truth not-so-adventurous-as-advertised field of endeavor, I stumbled across the idea of living in exotic locations with strange people, then writing about it, and got very excited about anthropology (plus I fantasised about the idea of making beautiful coffee table books about different cultures in exotic places). But I just missed out on a scholarship to do a PhD, and that was the end of that. Still determined to travel and have adventures, I wound up in Switzerland with a New Zealander who’d introduced me to rock-climbing. After teaching some English, trying to start a trekking micro-business, and trying my hand at freelance adventure writing and photography, I then ventured into the field of motherhood and met my greatest challenge. I completely adored my son, but life turned traumatic as we’d just moved city so I was socially isolated and alone with a new baby in a small apartment while my husband worked 10 hours or more a day, and all the other mothers in the local park spoke a different mother tongue. Yes, I had learnt to speak the local language, but being a shy person by nature I was really incapable of making friendly chit-chat whilst stumbling along in a new second language. I endured TWO YEARS of this and I was starting to go a bit batty. Finally we moved back to Australia. Glossing over the painful and traumatic bits of the marriage and its subsequent end, my wonderful new professional-quality printer which I bought to print out my best photos gave me an idea of a new business I could try. Step 2, opening my gallery. Moving, with my beautiful son, back to the comfort and safety of home in the Flinders Ranges to recover a bit of emotional equilibrium, I immediately opened my own gallery, printing and framing business (after all, why not add a bit of challenge and stress in the guise of rebuilding my life?). I was totally blown away with the reception. Simply having a shop front in the town centre gave me instant credibilty. Before I knew it people were paying good money to put my landscape photos on their walls and booking themselves in for portrait sittings. I was at the same time excited and terrified. I was flying by the seat of my pants – I had no formal qualifications or industry experience and sometimes I felt like I was just bluffing my way whilst stumbling along in the dark. But I persisted and even won a professional award for one of my landscape photos in just my first year of being a professional (pinch me). The learning curve has been very steep, but I think I now know enough about the profession of photography to be not quite so terrified at my own audacity. I still stand in awe of other professional photographers who actually know what they’re doing, and try not to talk too much lest I give myself away as an incompetent or a fool. For starting this business, the big advantage of my small, remote town is low overheads and no local competition. The big disadvantage is small population and not too many tourists, so I really just scrape by at the moment. I’d like to thank everyone who’s bought my fine art prints and/or portrait services – I have enough income to pay the rent and put food on the table, and that’s a great start. Just as importantly makes me feel really warm and fuzzy on the inside, which is a long way from being depressed! I’ve now been invited to exhibit my work in Studio 88, Yankalilla, South Australia (coming up in July). I really hope to build up a following outside of my home town. My goal is to make decent money from my limited edition landscape photography. When it comes down to it, I’d love to be the next Peter Lik or Ken Duncan, but time will tell if I really have the photographic and marketing skills. Step 3, don’t rest on any laurels, in fact let’s not rest too much at all. Let’s add a new project to the basket!! Try to do something about decreased funding to hospitals and schools. Kaz Cooke, the little book of stress I swear to you, I’m not really trying to follow the advice in this book, it just happens to have uncanny echoes of what I’m doing. It will be exciting, though. Stay tuned for upcoming news on my hospital fundraiser book project!

The 2009 Rip Curl Women’s Pro was held over the Easter Weekend at Bells Beach. Saturday morning was cold, plenty of sea spray to coat my lens with, (I didn’t have a cleaning cloth), but the waves were okay, not huge, but good enough for a contest. I have been heartened lately by the number of people I have met… in ordinary life, on the Internet, and even here on the Bubble, who are prepared to stand up and be counted as enemies of the wholesale slaughter of innocent little people. One thing that has struck me is that they are from all walks of life, of many religions or none, regard themselves as “left wing” or ” right wing” or “centre”, and are as different as they could be. They are far removed from the religious fanatics that some would have us believe all pro-lifers are. No, we are not fanatics, or murderers, or potential murderers. We are just ordinary people who have one thing in common: we are angered, appalled and saddened by the way( while much is rightly made of other human rights issues) the torture and murder of so many unborn babies is ignored. According to some estimates 50,000,000 babies are aborted each year worldwide. Someone has to speak for them. I would like to appeal for all those on the Bubble who are pro-life to demonstrate their pro-life stand, perhaps by creating some artworks, photomanips, poems etc. such as I have tried to do with one or two of my humble efforts. There are doubtless other ways to help get this important message over; but this is one way. One suggestion I have is that, where it is feasible, we make some collaborative works, balancing the strengths of different people. We should all recall that if one tiny life is saved, if one mind is opened, it is well worth it. BubbleMails on this subject (or any other) always welcome. / / darkvampire. /

  • Tripod Review - Slik 700DX

I purchased a Slik 700DX tripod and I am very impressed with this tripod, so I thought I would write a small review to benefit those who are looking to purchase a tripod, or looking to upgrade their tripod. This is my first Slik tripod, but I’ve owned a Slik 800 Ball head for many years and it has been the best head I’ve owned! This tripod is my 5th “Real” tripod that I’ve owned (I’ve had a few cheap and flimsy tripods too). The 700DX would have to be the best value and built of the lot! It’s built as well (If not better) then my old Manfrotto 055XB Pro that I owned, but the 700DX cost a fraction of what the 055XB Pro cost, the only thing missing on the 700DX is the flip out centre column featured on the 055 Pro (But I didn’t use it much, so won’t really miss that feature). I also owned a Benro tripod with the same feature, but never used it, so decided not to worry about getting a tripod with that feature this time around. The legs on the 700DX are just as thick and study as the 055, and it’s just as tall. It’s a very large tripod, The camera is at face level without having to extend the centre column which is great, and I can extend the centre column to get the camera positioned well over my head for some really unusual perspectives. The only problem is, since this tripod is so tall you will also need to be a tall person, or you won’t be able to see through the camera’s viewfinder when the tripod is at full hight (without the centre column extended). The legs feature foam leg warmers on each of the legs (The manfrotto only had one, and I use to accidentally jam my fingers between the metal legs when closing the legs). The 700DX uses a clip system to lock/unlock the legs, and there is a groove that runs along the legs which prevents the legs from rotating and makes extending/retracting the legs much smoother. The legs are made from Slik’s A.T.M. Titanium alloy which makes the legs really strong (They claim to be 40% stronger then the equivalent metal construction) and it also makes the tripod lighter then one made of aluminium. I can say, it does feel lighter then my Manfrotto 055 Pro did, but it is still a very solid tripod! The legs have locks at the top of each leg which you pull out which allows you to spread the legs into different positions to allow you to position the tripod in non standard positions, and you can spread the legs apart to get the tripod right down to the ground (Just like most of the popular professional tripod systems) which is great if you do allot of macro photography, or like to get a really low perspective. I prefer this pull out system over the Manfrotto system where you have to press down (If the legs aren’t in the right position, it would lock up) The Benro tripods also work the same way as the Slik system. The tripod has really nice thick rubber feet, and they look better then the Manfrotto feet (Which use to keep falling off on my previous Manfrotto’s). The centre column can be split into two sections (It unscrews at the centre) so you can get the tripod really low down to the ground when you spread the legs apart to the lowest position setting. The centre column can also be inverted to also allow you to get really low down perspectives. I bought the tripod with a 3 way tilt/pan head (It was cheaper to buy it in this kit form then for me to just buy the legs alone!). The head is actually pretty decent, much better then the entry level Manfrotto 3 way heads. This head has a very solid build, with a all metal construction, and features two spirit levels. The head also features Slik’s circular quick release plate which I am a huge fan of! There is no messing around trying to fit the plate as it will fit in any position, and it also has a dual locking mechanism which prevents accidental release of the camera (you press down on a clip to release the plate). It’s a quality head, and would suit someone who is purchasing their first tripod/head combo. Overall, I am very impressed with this tripod, it’s well designed and built and will definitely stand up to punishment of a pro photographer. It’s great value for money too, so if your looking for a quality tripod for a budget price, the 700DX is definitely worth a look. Highly recommended! If your interested in this tripod, visit the Slik 700DX Tripod Website UPDATE – Slik 800 Ball Head I was finally able to track down another Slik 800 Ball Head from a local dealer after searching for one (These have always been hard to find, even the online dealers never seem to stock them, even though they are listed on some sites) I had one of these heads, but sold it to get a Benro head which I didn’t really like and sold a while ago. I had been just using the 3 way Slik head that came with the tripod since then, but wasn’t really satisfied with it (I’m not a big fan of tilt/pan heads). I am now using the Slik 800 ball head on the 700DX tripod legs now, and it is a huge improvement! Much easier to work with, and you get all the convinces and advantage over using a ball head (they are much easier to adjust, as you only really need to unscrew one screw to make adjustments, or to tilt the camera into portrait position). The 800 head uses the same circle quick release plate as the tilt/pan head that came with the tripod, so now I have a spare quick release plate! If you are looking to upgrade the 3 way tilt/pan head that comes with the tripod, I can recommend the 800 ball head, it’s the easiest and most sturdy head that I’ve used (I had my first one for 4 years) and it can take a decent load too (I’ve had a 40D with grip, 100-400 IS and flash all mounted on the head). The head can be purchased for around $120-$150 unfortunately it is a bit hard to find, but well worth trying to find one! If your interested in the ball head, visit the Slik 800 Website

A simple tutorial on how to remove a background from an image placed into Photoshop. There may be an easier way I don’t know. I nutted this out this afternoon. 1.Open Photoshop and set up your T-Shirt template to look like this. Make sure it’s set to transparent background. / 2. Select File>Place>choose the image you want to put into the template. / 3. A box will appear, like this one below, click okay. / 4. Your image will appear. Double click on the image to embed it. Select the magic wand tool and click on green background (your background-hopefully you have a one colour background). Marching ants should appear (doesn’t show here) around the image and canvas. / 5. Select the erase background tool in the tool bar. The marching ants are there to protect your image from accidently being erased. / 6. Start clicking around your image to remove background. You’ll have to zoom in and out to pick up any tiny bits that may be missed. To make your eraser brush smaller use the [ on your keyboard. To make it larger click the ] . / 7. Hopefully you’ll end up with something like this. If so save as a png file and it’s ready to upload to RB as a T-Shirt image!!! /
