  • Rat Cat
    by billyboy

    US$3.99–US$91.20

One of my favorites. Our kitten, OJ, was shot on the earth filled flower pot. The rat was killed by another cat who dragged it into our house, and I decided to take it’s picture before giving it a proper burial. Used the same Elinchrom studio flash as with the kitten shot, hanging the rat by it’s tail from a tripod. The flowers were crushed and shot separately, and all 3 elements were put together in Photoshop. The idea for the picture came to me when, as I was looking at the original photo of the kitten on the pot, the rat was dragged in… I waited till everyone else went to bed before doing the rat shoot session. Direction of lighting and shadow effects were important to make the collage look realistic.

We are in the very early stages of organising the launch of a Redbubble Magazine which will also be foundation for a competition. The magazine will be a combination of poetry, short stories and images (digital art, illustration etc). We are thinking everybody who is published will get a copy of the magazine plus $100 RedBubble voucher. We are also thinking about two main prizes. / - For the writing side we are inclining towards a first edition (unsigned) Sylvia Plath book of poetry we have access to. (Could also get a signed early Auden if that is more appealing). / - We are not sure what the image people might like. The first edition of the magazine will be mainly for the digital artists and traditional artists (not photographers who have had their go). Question is what would you like? We could get a Wacom Tablet. Or would people prefer something like a collection of Warhol memorabilia or fine art book (eg signed David Hockey book)? So great book or technology gizmo? Let us know and we will try and deliver.

  • Changing Love
    by Unseen

    US$4.99–US$114.00

I do not love you except because I love you; / I go from loving to not loving you, / From waiting to not waiting for you / My heart moves from cold to fire. I love you only because it’s you the one I love; / I hate you deeply, and hating you / Bend to you, and the measure of my changing love for you / Is that I do not see you but love you blindly. Maybe January light will consume / My heart with its cruel / Ray, stealing my key to true calm. In this part of the story I am the one who / Dies, the only one, and I will die of love because I love you, / Because I love you, Love, in fire and blood. Words by Pablo Neruda who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971. Words that we can all relate to. Happy New Year From The Sparrows Music – The Blue Danube – Andre Rieu 1st January 2009

Announcing a new Photo Competition. The theme is “Once in a Blue Moon” / Deadline February 28, 2008 You don’t need to have a blue moon in your entry. If this was a beauty pageant we all would be going up to Flickr and giving it a big collective kiss for winning the Webby award. Yes we came in a commendable second to them in the Community category. I am not sure, however, that it feels much like a loss. It was a joy to read the lovely comments (314 of them) on the Webby site about RedBubble. This puts us in the top handful of most commented sites. RedBubble still may be small(ish) but at least we’re passionate. We captured just a few of the comments for posterity including: SHRyan: “Without doubt the best community site I have ever come across. So much talent and support for each other. Puts others in the shade.” Tim Chuma: “I have had my work on my own personal site for over five years and it hasn’t come to as much notice as having it up on RedBubble for less than a year. I have met a few people in real life due to it.” Monster your …: “RedBubble is awesome in it brings so many different cultures together with art, design , photography, friendship, guidance and much, much more! Deadsie: “RedBubble is by far the best website which supports the arts of creative people. Whether its writing, artwork, simple designs or just finding that certain group for you, there is something for everyone.” Northbeacher: “Some of the work there is absolutely stunning, really no exaggeration – there is some truly extraordinary never-seen-before art on the site, and the community is “top shelf”, great people, and you can harvest a multitude of ideas, resulting in “why didn’t I think of that”. OK, we admit it would have been nice to be the bride not the bridesmaid and we all were being very well behaved in public, but nevertheless it does leave a certain collective warmth.
