The grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone is a tough picture to take. It is too big for even my super wide angle lens to get it all. The blue glow above the blue water has to be seen to be believed. The vapors from the hot water do act as a prism of sorts.
The Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park. Focused on a portion of it to contrast the red and the blue.
Artists can color the sky red because they know it’s blue. Those of us who aren’t artists must color things the way they really are or people might think we’re stupid. / ~Jules Feiffer (1929 – )
Acrylic Prismatic painting on canvas measurind 130cm. X 100cm.
This is a drawing that was produced with graphite and selective amounts of white charcoal on paper. It was a basic division of perspectives, creating the prismatic composition. Each space was drawn with features that were derived from different angles, and interesting spatial relationships were created when viewing the composition as a whole. Overall, the multi-dimensional affect that developed has a great appeal to me. I will potentially create some painted works using this simple compositional break-down of various subjects. The original dimensions of the drawing are 21in. X 15in. It was produced in 2000.

Normally you do not get a good view of this pool. I was given a tip to hike up to a near by hill. Doing so enabled me to take this photo. The mist rising from the pool actually took on the color of the pool which you can see on the left side. This is truly one of the highlights of Yellowstone NP. This spring is one of the iconic images of Yellowstone National Park. The best image I have ever seen of it was shot by Pete Saloutos, an aerial shot, and I think he said it took him and Look Magazine over 5 years to get the permits to get the shot. If you don’t have 5 years to plan, try climbing the hill adjacent to the spring when you visit. And pay attention to the color reflecting off of the steam of the spring as you walk in… it’s an etherial blue. Canon 40D, 24-105mm lens, tripod, circular polarizer, graduated ND filter p.s. This water clear, prismatic crystal of hexagonal calcite was collected by me in the Dalen-Kjorholt Mine at Brevik, Norway in 2006. The location in the mine where this was collected just sparkled under the headlamp looking like an ice lined cavern. Some of the finest and most diverse forms of calcite I have seen come from this underground mine. Minolta 7D with Tamron 90 mm f2.8 macro.
