He stated because I did a journal introducing him to the RB members he wanted to show his appreciation. I had such a lovely day yestereday – out with friends during the day – a beautiful walk and lovely meal, then off to see the Rat Pack with family last night – I get home and see I have sold a framed print of Angel – to whoever was so kind, I want to say a huge thanks. I wish I knew who it was so that I could thank them personally but instead I will do it publicly. This means a lot to me, especially as I have dropped of the radar quite a bit in recent months. I also want to thank all those who are still commenting on my work and keeping in touch with me – that means a lot too. I hope all is good with you in redbubble land – life is good here and hope to be back on a more regular basis soon. Take care Debxxx

As I described in an earlier journal entry the colours produced by RB’s T-shirt printing on white shirts is quite different from the sRGB colours we see on our screens. I’ve since measured the colour behaviour when printing on grey shirts, and it’s dramatic. To illustrate this a bit more, I’ll return to the white T-shirt case. Mapping the range of colours that can be reproduced in the “Lab” coordinate system we get shapes like this: / The wireframe is sRGB, while the solid shape is the white T-shirts. It’s easier to see the precise differences when this 3D model is rotated: this is just a snapshot. The ‘L’ axis represents lightness, with black at the bottom and white at the top. The ‘a’ and ‘b’ axes map out the range of colours. / As you can see, the response in the purples is very weak. Now to compare the white and grey T-shirts from the same point of view: / This time the wireframe is the white T-shirt while the solid shape represents the colours of the grey shirts. Let’s look at it from the other side: / Not surprisingly, the grey shirts are much darker. At the same time the colours are significantly less saturated (closer to the ‘L’ axis). Compare the tiny space of the grey T-shirt colours to the relatively massive sRGB space in the first image! The colours currently reproduced on grey T-shirts are very subdued. / I advise that photo printing on non-white T-shirts be avoided at the moment. / The colours reproduced on coloured shirts are just going to be weird (although I haven’t measured them). “Line-art” can obviously be more appropriate, but even then you should be conscious of how the colours in your design will be affected! I noticed a few days ago that some of the images that have borders (like The Atlas Of Dreams) are being cropped on the print and card previews. I had uploaded them with an added 2% of white space all around to prevent this happening, but apparently this wasn’t enough. I’ve re-uploaded the images with 5% added white space to rectify this problem, but now the image previews have all this extra white space around them. This is certainly not a big deal, but I prefer the way deviantART handles the problem – just upload your image and reduce it’s size on the prints if needed to prevent clipping.

I recently purchased a laminated copy of my “Looking West” photograph. I was curious about how the whole system works from a customer’s point of view and what the finished product would actually look like! I purposefully chose a black and white print because I’ve found that they are the most difficult and technical to print digitally. I am very pleased to report that the speed of delivery and print quality were very impressive. I didn’t take long at all (plus I was updated by email every step of the way), and the print is a beautiful example of black and white printing, that is, great contrast, clear and sharp and (most importantly!) without colour cast! It reminds me of the prints I was making on Ilford Multigrade paper back when I was studying! I love real black and white prints, and the team at RedBubble have delivered the goods on this one! I leave my photos with confidence that what I produce in my digital darkroom will in fact end up on the printed page. Thanks again Bubblerinos!
