My 14 year-old daughter Kelsey took this photograph at the Calgary Zoo. I just loved the content look on the leopard’s face, the intense blackness of the eyes and the way that he blended in so well with his surroundings, that I begged her to let me use it. So, all the credit goes to Kelsey Palmer on this one. Don’t you just want to hug his big fluffy chest? NOT!

Steve’s_Biography The tiger (Panthera tigris) is a member of the Felidae family; the heaviest of the four “big cats” in the genus Panthera. Native to much of eastern and southern Asia, the tiger is an apex predator and an obligate carnivore. Reaching up to 4 metres (13 ft) in total length and weighing up to 300 kilograms (660 pounds), the larger tiger subspecies are comparable in size to the biggest extinct felids. Aside from their great bulk and power, their most recognizable feature is the pattern of dark vertical stripes that overlays near-white to reddish-orange fur, with lighter underparts. The largest subspecies of tiger is the Siberian tiger.

Its fur is thick and usually ash grey with a tinge of brown in places. The koala gets its name from an ancient Aboriginal word meaning “no drink” because it receives over 90% of its hydration from the Eucalyptus leaves (also known as gum leaves) it eats, and only drinks when ill or times when there is not enough moisture in the leaves, ie during droughts etc. The koala is the only mammal, other than the Greater Glider and Ringtail Possum, which can survive on a diet of eucalyptus leaves.

Steve’s_Biography Reticulated Pythons have amazing patterns on their bodies which are designed to help them blend into the leaf litter of the rainforests. These patterns are a mixture of light browns, creams, yellow dark brown and even black. Their heads are yellowish with a dark, thin line and their bellies are yellow or white. The Reticulated Python is one of the world’s largest snakes reaching a huge 10 metres in length. Reticulated Pythons grow to be the longest snakes in the world. / Habitat: / The Reticulated Python is commonly found in the jungles of South East Asia, the Philippines and parts of the Indonesian archipelago. Reticulated Pythons enjoy the tropical areas in rainforests, and they rely on water and are often found near ponds, creeks and river systems.

Lord of the Indian Jungles, The Royal Bengal Tiger, Portrait The Bengal Tiger, or Royal Bengal is a subspecies of tiger primarily found in Bangladesh, India, and also Nepal, Pakistan, Bhutan, Myanmar and southern Tibet. It is the most common tiger subspecies, living in a variety of habitats, including grasslands, subtropical and tropical rain forests, scrub forests, wet and dry deciduous forests, and mangroves. Since the early 1990s the tiger population has begun to decline again, due to habitat destruction and large-scale poaching for tiger skins and bones. The Bangladeshi government is trying hard to show the world that the tiger is thriving in Bangladesh, often using controversial techniques like taking molds of paw prints to track tiger populations. It was recently discovered that tigers have been wiped out from one of Project Tiger’s leading sanctuaries, Sariska. The current population of wild Bengal tigers in the Indian subcontinent is now estimated to be between 1,300 and 1,500 which is less than half of the previous estimate of 3,000-4,500 tigers. This estimate is based on a state-by-state census conducted in India in 2001. Today’s reports show there are fewer than 200 tigers left in the wild. Habitat losses and the extremely large scale incidences of poaching are serious threats to species survival. Poachers kill tigers not only for their pelts, but also for body parts used to make various traditional East Asian medicines. Other factors contributing to their loss are urbanization and revenge killing. Farmers blame tigers for killing cattle and will shoot them. Poachers also kill tigers for their bones and teeth to make medicines that are alleged to provide the tiger’s strength. The hunting for Chinese medicine and fur is the biggest cause of decline of the tigers. In India, retired Indian Army personnel are being recruited to save the Bengal tiger from poaching gangs.

This baby zebra was born June 2009. His stripes are still brown, and he has an over-sized head for his body to which he will grow into.
