  • If you have viewed other pictures I have taken you may have noticed that most of them were taken in Scotland, if you have not viewed my other pictures…Why not? / Anyway, a group of Scottish pictures would not be complete without the traditional Scottish Thistle.

  • One day after a storm pushed through, the sky was filled with rosy, low-lying clouds. I grabbed the camera and tried to find a way to showcase those unusual clouds. I noticed a sweet gum tree branch, barren of leaves but bedecked with its characteristic prickly gum balls, and thought it was very pretty with the pink clouds in the distance.

  • This wild Honey-bee is eager to land on this Prickly-pear flower to gather enough pollen to take back to the hive.

  • The Bynoes Prickly Gecko Heteronotia binoei is the most common gecko species of the semi-arid and arid shrublands of Australia. This image was taken in Paroo-Darling National Park in western NSW.

  • Scientific Name: Opuntia polyacantha / Common Name: Plains Prickly-Pear Cactus / Family Name: Cactaceae / This variation of the Prickly Pear Cactus is found in arid areas of Southern British Columbia to eastern Oregon and northern Arizona; east to western Texas, Missouri, and central Canada. It flourishes in light sandy soil. It is very hardy and thrives in dry pastureland. This one was taken in a pasture southeast of Swift Current, Saskatchewan in local pasture but could be seen in almost any areas of the Canadian or American prairie habitat. They flower in early to mid July. / Historical data indicate that Plains Indians and settlers used them as food. The paddles may be eaten raw but were most often fried; the fruits may be split, dried, and eaten plain or added to soups or stews, or their sweet juices turned into candies (still popular in the American Southwest).

  • My front and back porches are lined in potted cacti…I can’t wait for them to go through their blooming cycle every Spring and if your lucky they will bloom again in late summer! Blossoms can get 4 inches across in size. / Woke up this morning to these little frilly pink faces on one of the miniture barrel cacti. It is such a delightful contrast with the dangerous sharp spines of the cacti and then these soft delicate flowers on top.   • The Bynoe’s Prickly Gecko Heteronotia binoei is the most common gecko species of the semi-arid and arid shrublands of Australia. This specimen was found wandering the mulga shrublands of the Gascoyne region of Western Australia and captured on a Canon EOS1000D. Steve is the Principal Ecologist at EnviroKey, a specialist ecological consultancy that undertakes surveys, research and education programs across Australia.

  • Grows in dry, rocky, open sub-alpine and alpine slopes throughout most of the area. Blooms from late may to mid-June. / A low loosely matted evergreen plant with rosettes of small, wedge-shaped thick, somewhat fleshy leaves having 3 sharply pointed prongs on the ends. During dry seasons, they become very sharp and prickly. During the winter and in early spring the leaves are very red. The lower part of the stems contain many dried up and old leaves. The flower stem, 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm) is quite stout, light in color and has a few small modified leaves. The stems are topped with a cluster of small flowers with protruding ovaries.   • A porcupine I spotted down at Sikome Lake in Fish Creek Park in Calgary. This guy was just chillin about six feet off the ground in a small pine tree. He let me get very close and pretty much just ignored me. He was backlit against the sun so he was pretty hard to miss. / Taken Dec 6 Until a couple of months ago, I had never seen one of these in the wild, now I’ve seen four.
