Hello! Another week another RedBubble release. This week there’s a couple of new things – the ability to bulk delete BubbleMail and a sneak preview of a the RedBubble ‘private site’. The private site is designed to allow you to create a site showcasing just your work. The thinking behind the private site is that RedBubble needs to evolve into a much more dynamic website. Everyone wants different things from RedBubble. Some folks are here for the learning, some are here to sell, some are here for the positive feedback, some are here to be entertained. Et cetera. We’re never going to be able to create one static site that satisfies all needs, so over the next little while we’re going to evolve RedBubble into a much more dynamic site that people can tailor and adapt to suit their needs. The private site is still a few weeks away from public release, but we’ve got a very very early beta product ready for today and I’ll like to show you all an example and ask for your feedback. The example site can be found here and I’d particularly value general feedback on the new configuration menu which appears to the right of the large images (the menu is still a work in progress) and the options you’d like to see us offer in the private site as we build it out over the next couple of weeks. And finally we stumbled across this review of RedBubble a couple of days ago. We love these reviews and they’re great for improving the Google rank of RedBubble and all the work on RedBubble. So if you feel like writing about RedBubble please ‘go nuts’. The more links back to RedBubble the better. You might also want to check out all the tools for linking to RedBubble available here. Have a great week! Peter

Hello Bubbleers. Has it been two weeks already? We’ve been hard at work on many wonderful things which are just gonna take some time, but we do have some goodies that were ready to release today. Drum roll please… New Framed Print Previews Over the next few hours we’ll rolling out new product previews for our framed prints. They look amazing if I do say so myself, but it’ll take a few hours for them to spread out over the entire site, so here’s an example from the beautiful portfolio of TalBright: New Tee Previews They’re not quite as amazing as the frames admittedly, but we’re also rolling out new tee previews over the next few hours, with pretty accurate illustrations of each style, more room for bigger previews, etc. We were also “this close” to having an accurate preview of each garment size as well, but they’ll have to wait a little bit. Here’s an example of a Girly Short Sleeve design by dkcazaly: You might notice some weird stretching of designs while we roll these out, but it’ll be worth it! The reason behind this change is that we want to do some pretty interesting stuff with the tees, like printing on the back, or positioning the design in the bottom corner, etc, and a nice flat realistic illustration of the garment will make this much much easier. Beta Testing Challenges The Challenge Café group is graciously helping us over the next few weeks by testing out the new challenge functionality. I’ll post some more about challenges in the next day or so once we’re set-up. They’re not-quite-done, but there’s some pretty cool stuff in there, like the new “work selector” which lets you enter a work into the challenge from the challenge page in the group rather than from inside MyBubble (which we’ll obviously be rolling out to other places, like groups, ASAP). Order By Phone in Australia We’re also experimenting with the idea of “order by phone”, starting with Australia. Copyright IPTC Data We’re also in the process of rolling out copyright notices embedded in the IPTC meta data of the images. It’ll take a few hours to spread out across the site, but every main, zoom and product preview image (all the big ones) will soon contain the copyright data. There’s no setting or preference, we just do it. There’s a swag of bug fixes and little things too, so enjoy! — Justin
We see the beauty from with in / It started with a thought / and grew and we drew. / The inner soul of one little rose / That shined before the glory of God / One little speck that was it flaw / But God loved it tru it all. / The moon light rose and its flaw.
We added this conservatory to our home four years ago and what a gift it has been! Rain or shine, we can so fully appreciate the beauty God has given us in the surrounding cathedral of towering fir trees, and, in the warmer months, the radiant colors of the garden flowers. Below are the paintings and photos on my new 2010 Redbubble Calendar: /

So this week Russ has started work on building a new MyBubble overview page … it’s going to take quite a few weeks to complete but I thought you might be interested in a sneak preview. There’s a few different reasons for this update … he’s my quick summary. 1) We humans are much better at processing images than words – so we’re looking for a design that’s much more visual. The expectation is that this will make it easier for us to browse large amounts of information without it feeling like hard work. 2) It’s hard to stay in touch with things that we’re interested in on RB (e.g. forums threads and comments on a work) – so we’re introducing the idea of a ‘subscription’ that would alert you to a new post once you’ve subscribed to a forum thread or comments against a work. 3) I think people are most interested in things that have happened to them; then they’re interested in things that their friends have done and then they’re interested in what’s happening in their groups. So we’ve divided the left hand screen up in that priority order. 4) We want BubbleMail to be for personal communication – for group communication we want to have the idea of a group journal that the hosts can write in and you would then receive a notification in MyBubble as new mode of communication. Well that’s about it … I’m pretty excited with the changes … the next change I’ll preview is probably a complete overhaul of groups. To see a mock up of the new MyBubble go here.

It’s still very much a work in progress … but we’ve been listening to a bunch of feedback and thinking about what we want to achieve with the MyBubble page (challenging our assumptions). This version of the design still enables us to introduce the important concepts of a subscription and group news … but still retains the ‘feed’ feel of the current design (and is a better design in my opinion). This design would allow full configuration of the feed – we’re still to work out how this interface will work … As an interesting note, only 12% of our current members have made any configuration of the current MyBubble page … One of the things I like about this design is that it’s presenting a visually simpler activity feed … it feels a little lighter … which is one of the things I’d like to achieve. If it looks broken in IE please go and buy a mac and try it in safari (it’s still a work in progress) ;-) http://plusminus.com.au/clients/redbubble/MyBubble/mybubble-index2.html## - Peter

Ahoy there – Some of you might remember a few mock-ups that were posted a while back of MyBubble and the Groups updates which included a new site-wide navigation on them. Well, we’re going to be releasing this navigation this week, so we thought we’d give you a bit of a preview so you don’t fall off your chairs when it happens, explain a few of the changes and ask for a bit of feedback. While this might feel like it, it’s not a “new RedBubble” or a “complete makeover” – we’re just tweaking things to help us help you a bit better. So here it is: There’s probably 3 main reasons we’re changing the nav. The first is for consistency among all of our nav – we realised that we’ve had you dancing all over the page to get to different things, so we’re connecting as much of the nav as we can into one spot that stays put! The next obvious change is we’ve moved away from image-based menus which means the nav loads faster and the whole nav can scale with the browser text-size setting, which helps out our accessibility friends. Lastly, we needed to change the way the nav worked behind the scenes so that moving forward, we could implement some of the great ideas we’ve got for updating the site, but faster. All this means that we’re spending less time working around older styles and more time making stuff for you guys! (which really is a good thing right?) Gone are the gradient buttons and the odd little drop-shadow guy that was hanging off the left of the menu, but along for the ride has come a fancy new giant “_you really will notice it_” BubbleMail indicator. Unfortunately, IE users won’t be seeing things quite as funky as everyone else – but we’ll push out some IE fixes as soon as we can to get it a little closer. Needless to say, you can still use everything in IE, just with a few less curves and you could always grab Firefox , Safari or Chrome and then you’ll get the full-curvy-goodness straight away. Because of the site nav changes, we’ve had to go through every page of the site and tweak everything to match and fit as some of the pages were relying on the old navigational styles for odd things. We’re getting rid of the gradient-grey background that has been site-wide, and replacing it with a full-white background that’s going to make your images pop a lot more, as well as freshening the place up a bit. The question we have for you is, what do you like, a full-white page, or something with a white background, but framed in a grey. Don’t get mixed up, we’re not talking about a fluid, expanding page here, just whether you’re more interested in a plain white background, or something like a rectangle of white within a light grey. This isn’t a vote or anything as fancy as that, we’re just after a gauge of what you guys are expecting. As a bonus, while fixing the forums you’ve scored a bit of extra width for reading and writing: There’s a few other little things that have changed like the size of text boxes on the Add Writing + Journal screens, the groups + forum search boxes are a little more obvious, we’re limiting the width of images in journals, comments and descriptions, the default site font is standard across all platforms now (sorry Lucida Grande lovers) and a whole bunch more. Like I said, we’re doing this so that other updates are easier on us and faster to you, and if you find a page that we’ve missed that’s gone crazy with its layout, just let us know and we’ll sort it out – but hopefully overall you’ll like what’s getting released. Cheers guys – Russ ps. For those of you keeping score, worry not, we’re still busy fixing up the Group News parts of MyBubble too. We really wanted it to release this week, and while we are putting a Group News feed in your activity feeds, we’ve got a few final tweaks before we get the Group stuff in MyBubble 100% right, so here’s a little preview of where we’re going with it just to keep you up to date:

/ ... here’s a little sneak preview of what I’m working on right now :) This is only a cropped view of it, I’m saving the whole thing for later when it’s completely coloured.. and then I’ll show you the rest. So far, it’s taken me 15 hours to draw it, with lots of detail required for the wicker weave in the pram. I like detail, but this was seriously a lot of work! lol Phew! Glad I’ve finished the drawing, and look forward to the process of colouring now, probably digitally… but I can only work at short intervals… all this close work is hurting my eyeballs :) Happy creating everyone!
