  • Surfer waiting in the lineup at the crack of dawn, I guess the title says it all

  • I’ve always loved Margaret Widdemer’s poem, “The Watcher.” I’ve coupled it with an image I took of a steeple of a very old church in Houston, Texas. I hope that those who have suffered the loss of a mother will find comfort in this photo. My mother is still alive and I am grateful for her; I created this image for those whose mothers are no longer with them and who suffer loneliness, especially during the holidays and on birthdays and anniversaries of death.

  • How do you describe the feeling of emptiness, the deep carved out longing for something you cannot reach? Like some gaping wound or a cave of ancient sadness, you feel that nothing can reach or fill that space within you. What is missing from your life? But somewhere a heart still beats and sings of love… / Feelings pulsate and flood your being…. Somewhere the mind is alive and working…. / Thoughts clammer and clatter inside your head. Both will carry on in their way, regardless of the other…and tear you apart, unless you find the keys to that vast space in between….. The two need to come together in balance. / Somewhere in that hollow space, a bridge exists to link the logic and rationale of the head with the freedom and creativity of the heart….. / a perfect marriage of wisdom, words, and knowledge, to emotion, sentience and passion…. Stop and allow that hollow to embrace you. It is a part of you, and you are at home. Close your eyes, breathe, and in the darkness you will see. The keys are there….the hollows are not as threatening as you once thought….they are merely a sign for you to pause and be in your own space, right here and now, so that balance can be restored. / Perhaps it is only your presence from your own existence that was missing all along. /

  • Sunrise on a canal in the south of France … inviting a calming presence. /

  • Interior at Tretower Court and Castle, Wales

  • Medium: Multi/mixed-media – charcoal, pastel, gesso, watercolour, acrylic, oil, collage, leaves, fabric, papers – himalayan rice paper, cartridge, Arches 300 gsm rag paper. / Triptych: H.122 x W.170 / This work is from the curated group exhibition ‘Remnants of Presence’ Exhibition. Innisfail, Far North Queensland. / One of the conceptual challenges for each artist was to approach a work with subject matter in-two-parts to show recent practice/new work development and be shown together. Visible Traces represents renewal, journey of experiences and time passage. Part A – Of recent practice (the two outer side panels) makes reference to the initial inspirations from: the natural environment, the human figure, various motifs including banana fibre made receptacles/vessels, lino prints and evolved symbology. Part B – The new work (centre) Prior artwork imagery & object ‘remnants’ were used for the initial stimuli and also represents my ‘presence’. All is fused into an abstract multi-layered composition. It is a collective tribute to the tropical shapes, forms, patterns, and textures etc that were the initial inspirations, the visible signage. Organic, gestural and spontaneous in feel (energy), with collage and mixed media processes mingled with personal symbolism. The work provides the viewer with facets and moments. Although ambiguous, there are sufficient visual markers to draw them in to discover further information and help them to intuitively and conceptually complete what they may perceive in the work and to sense the presence of the artist (spirit).

  • This was taken at the downtown loft where my church college group meets. On this day we were tearing down walls to make more room. If I’d taken a picture slightly to the left, you’d see mounds of insulation, drywall, wiring and 2×4s littering the room. It was a huge mess – hence the dust creating the wonderful effect near the window.

  • This calender consists of a series of ongoing portraits created through the process of stepping out of my own way and allowing collected imagery symbols mixed media and intuition to BECOME! Once upon a time…... I planned my art by doing a sketch or having an idea….at least a place to start. And once upon a time I realized there was more that needed expressing than my underused brain could imagine….and I have a GOOD imagination. This intuitive way of working was a necessary step in my own evolution as artist and being….to relinquish control….to learn to listen to my inner guide or higher self. I came to find during this exercise that ‘what I was asked to put on canvas’ seemed to make no sense at all …...just strange little pieces from nowhere…or so I thought yet as I was living my life I realized that it made no sense either. I concluded that this no sense or nonsense I was creating through my judgment actually reflects the innate sense we come from and all have,,,,THE BIG SENSE….....a sense beyond …....and so I trust this way of working more than I trust my way of working! LOL Enjoy IN JOY in whatever sense you can.

  • Shot in raw in late afternoon light outdoors. Psalm 89:15 / Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, O LORD

  • The Light Within You Nourishes My Dreams / Palm Fronds Silhouettes Dramatic Skies / Makawao Hawaii From my collection: / Awakening in Paradise / Maui Hawai’i “So many grains of sand / So many stars in the sky / So many miles around this planet of life / The sounds of creation must have echoed back along the corridors of the universe across the passionate heat of the Sun through the loving heart of Venus to unite twin souls together once separated by space and time What ancient calendar could have predicted that our time is now? / But here we are / I stand in the presence of a beauty beyond the stars / A loving, bright and beautiful soul that brings so much love and joy to my heart My night now bright with the starlight of your eyes / Your heavenly body graces my sky, night to day, the light within you nourishes my dreams and I see forever in your eyes Your lips touch mine and I am taken to a place, to a place of joy and hope and promise of a life together in our home You and me at the top of the mountain looking down on the world of love we created So kiss me / Hold me / Fill me up with your love that I may breathe only to whisper the words I love you!” ~ Poetry by David Stanley Bell
