  • Soooo, if i am going to be accused of it… I might as well look the part My husband thinks the computer has changed me, he thinks all our marriage problems started when I joined redbubble. Never mind the 25 years prior, our problems are the fault of me and my computer. / I beg to differ… / Symptoms of discontent… Him: That damn computer! That’s the problem! You type and type. I see the look on your face when you’re on there. Who are you talking to? / Me: Well, right now it is a 26 year old man, awesome artist and even more awesome writer. / His eyes bore a hole through mine and I can’t help but smile just a little to myself, knowing what he is assuming. / He’s gay, I say / And I watch his stare turn to disgust and he walks away Another day, he sees me type, then I laugh at the screen. / Him: Who are you talking to now? / Me: Well, it’s this guy that helps me with some of my photography; remember I showed you that EKG with the boys name flowing through the heartbeat? He did that for me. By the way, I really am going to get that as a tattoo / He scowls, he doesn’t like tattoos on women. / If you get a tattoo, I’m getting a tattoo, he says. / OK, I reply, what do you want? / “Your name.” / Oh fuck! I know our marriage is on the rocks and the last thing he needs on his body is my name. I wouldn’t do that, I tell him. / Why not, he asks, as his eyes bore through mine again. I could leave that question hanging but his stare makes me squirm a little and I answer out of nervousness. / “The only name you should put on your body is your kids, or maybe your mother, but don’t put mine there.” / Why not? he asks, still staring / I’m thinking fast, “well, what if I die, and you remarry, she will have to look at my name all the time, that’s not fair.” / He shrugs, too bad, he says. Another night / Him: Who are you talking to on the computer? / Me: Well it is this really smart guy that’s an awesome poet. / Let me see, he says. So he reads a poem, and he is frowning, he doesn’t get it. What is he talking about? Then he sees the avatar and he swears- “he’s black!” / “Umm, actually Arab I think” / His eyes narrow and his mouth sets and he walks away Then all hell hits the door of our marriage and I tell him I want a separation. He is adamant; it’s that damn computer, that’s our problem! You talk to those men and you won’t talk to me! / No it is not the computer, I tell him, this computer has saved me, it’s the best thing i have ever done, it’s healing me… we had problems looong before the computer. He scoffs and walks off in a huff. No, this computer is not a problem I think to myself / But your prejudice is… Photo: taken August 5, 2009 / Writing: August 8, 2009 / Posted: August 11, 2009 (our 25th wedding anniversary, btw)

  • The Weight of Chains They don’t always clank, these chains. Not like in the ghost stories. / They don’t always warn you of the evil in the room. / Sometimes they whisper, lovers close by your ear, cupping your chin and promising fidelity. / Sometimes they chatter, chipmunks in the grass, warning of predators. / Sometimes they coax you to wear them, grifters at your feet, telling tales of riches. They weigh on you, these chains. / You think you wear none? / Do you believe? / Do you hope? / Do you love? / Do you dream? / Do you eat? / Do you sleep? / Do you hate? / Do you envy? / Are you human? / Then you are in chains. / Break free of all of them and you’re dead. / Some are better than others, though. / Chains of love can weigh light like the flutter of an eyelash. / Chains of hope can weigh so little they carry you to other worlds. But some chains will crush you before you can feel them. / Hate. / Prejudice. / Those chains have no mercy. And some weigh what you weigh. They are you, your body. You feel them only when you fight them. Weightless, then? / Only at peace. I didn’t plan to upload this today because I’m behind in visiting you guys and replying, and I don’t want anyone to think I’m being rude. But I need to get it off my computer before I panic and throw it out. It’s YELLING at me. Well, OK, not really. But it’s a visceral reaction I’m having. It’s making me want to tear apart my life and rebuild it in better ways. Wow. Anyway, it’s seven photo images and some digital painting, combined and edited in Photoshop Elements 3. /

  • music This is a collage of individual photos my friends and I took for another mate’s birthday present. This was originally 4 photos which were a creative gift of friendship. I wanted to take it one step further. Individually, the 3 friends in this photo and myself are very different. 2 male, 2 female, 2 coloured, 2 white, 2 full blooded, 2 half blooded, 2 older, 2 younger, 2 single, 2 in relationships. Perfectly divided in half, matching on some levels, opposing on others. Remind me again, how are we so different? Imagine a world where we are not governed by what society think of us, where media is not god, where prejudice is laughable, where division is not the main focus of our time and a place where people can live, not exist. Idealistic? Maybe.. but nice to consider. Featured in Core [C.O.R.E] / Featured in Put Out Or Get Out Canon SX100IS Edited 9pm Original photo in negative, layered sections cut from other portraits of 3 friends on top, added colour filter to each slice, contrast increase, added texture to finish. Helen Bascom has been relieved of her duties as a voice of morality and decency among us. Helen is not necessarily the most popular massager of self indulgent egos and you may or may not agree with her methods, but there is no doubt that she is a caring and gutsy human being. She has never shied away from expressing her abhorrence of all forms of oppression and prejudice; racism sexism homophobia extreme religious zealotry Nazism etc. / / Various extreme right wing morons have waged a battle against her for years, these are the people who believe a Black man is not fit to lead a country and who would stoop to any depths to see Helen and other liberal minded people silenced. They use lies and deceit to further their self serving causes. I have personally been goaded by them too. It sickens me that they have won :-( / / This is a very sad day for people here who care about the things that are really important and that make a very real difference to the quality of humanity, surely among adults a few swear words aimed at an antagonist do not constitute a hanging offence? Or do they? / / This is a forum on the subject

  • You might think that from space, / there is no human race, / no country divides, / no set-asides, / no prejudice or fear or hate. But look here and see, / there is barbed wire around our globe, / placed there just like the extremes of a jail or prison camp, / not by God, / not by Aliens, / but by Humanity’s inhumanity. An infrared shot taken of the sky through barbed wire. Some simple processing and globlar effects transformed it quickly into this tormented world of ours.

  • Hear the loud alarum bells / Brazen bells! / What a tale of terror, now, their turbulency tells! / In the startled ear of night / How they scream out their affright! Edgar Allen Poe, The Bells. There are people who live in fear, in danger; whose observance of “these holidays” is desperate…splashed with blood, rent with gunfire and flames of pain. Some cling to the concepts of peace and good will. Others eschew hope. When I see decorations I never see them only for what they appear to be: cheery, twinkly representations of joy. I also see them as fissures in the blemished flesh of society, signals of change that never occurs. Cynical? Maybe. But the “alarum” bells do ring and people still bleed and burn. Will it always be this way? / / /
