This is a collaborative transatlantic entry between myself and the incredibly talented and totally awesome billyboy in Belgium for RedBubbles Gaia – The Living Planet competition. Now, I’m not a religious person, but I wanted to illustrate by using billyboys Noah’s Ark image that if we dont start taking care of this planet we are living on I truly / believe we will be in for a disaster of biblical proportions. All that is beautiful and wondrous will simply disappear… like so many ephemeral bubbles. We are all interconnected, and we must find our harmony with Gaia, or risk losing it all. Many thanks to billyboy for sharing my vision, and giving so generously of his time, blood, tears and love to bring this vision into glorious life. I originally intended this shot to be a picture of my son holding onto these balloons and taking off, floating into up into the sky … a fantasy, sotybook sort of image. However, my daughter immediately grabbed these balloons from him and started running off. So, as it turned out this eded up having a more realistic look than the one I originally intended, but I thought it turned out pretty cute with the desaturated colors throughout, except for the colorful balloons.

This was one of the feral kittens born to feral parents (an orange tabby and and a grey striped tabby) – Oscar (the orange) was very friendly with me. He lost his mamma as a kitten (spent his kitten-hood in our back yard with the little striped tabby). I don’t know where they ‘stayed’, but they came to my backdoor every morning for water and food (they knew I was such a sucker). The following spring there were four new little faces – this photo was just one of the kittens. I fed all 6 of them all summer, but worried about them over the coming winter that was to come. In October we live-trapped them and took them to the shelter where, happily, they all found homes – the kittens were parceled out one at a time (that made me sad) and Oscar and Mama (that’s what we called her) went together to a farm. 75% of my profit from all sales of this card will be donated to the local animal shelter. Went out riding around looking for barns. There ws one barn we wanted to be pics of-the people were outside so we asked if we could take pictures of the barn- to our great surprise to told us they had 3 – 1 week old babies and they let us go in to see them / /

I won’t sell this piece, and it is the only one. I have had offers before, but I am glad I didn’t accept them still. It’s painted on plasterboard I stole from a building site as at the time I couldn’t afford canvas, or even board. / The figure is me – I had long hair at the time… / It is the last piece I did before I quit drinking – TEN YEARS AGO TODAY – the 20th of december… The title is from my favourite Tori Amos song, from her first album.

Sleep, those little slices of death, how i loathe them. Oil on canvas 70×70 / still thinking about the title but this song was playing. still painting this with the help of my awesome mentor, Paul D Robertson, who also helped with providing a series of photographs of myself to draw and paint (there are more in my gallery) . so unfinished. / Check out My Latest Series / ‘Precious Illusions’- Alanis Morissette you’ll rescue me right? in the exact same way they never did.. / I’ll be happy right? when your healing powers kick in you’ll complete me right? then my life can finally begin / I’ll be worthy right? only when you realize the gem I am? but this won’t work now the way it once did / and I won’t keep it up even though I would love to / once I know who I’m not then I’ll know who I am / but I know I won’t keep on playing the victim these precious illusions in my head did not let me down when I was defenseless / and parting with them is like parting with invisible best friends this ring will me yet as will you knight in shining armor / this pill will help me yet as will these boys gone through like water but this won’t work as well as the way it once did / cuz I want to decide between survival and bliss / and though I know who I’m not I still don’t know who I am / but I know I won’t keep on playing the victim these precious illusions in my head did not let me down when I was a kid / and parting with them is like parting with a childhood best friend I’ve spent so long firmly looking outside me / I’ve spent so much time living in survival mode

This is how my first serious painting looks like and I chose to paint an owl. That was like 6 years ago I think :D Very few had seen this. When I was painting this, I was thinking “If I were an owl, I would be able to hear the sweet whispers of lovers in the park.”...yep, in case you are wondering, those are sound waves, owls have such fantastic hearing that’s simply amazing!! I always treasure the beginner’s spirit and I kept reminding myself not to lose it….because once you become used to something, it loses that magic, It is now nicely framed and hanging in the most intimate part of my apartment. I took this photograph about a year and a half ago, and it is one that I have been thinking about uploading, but have never managed to bring myself to share it – but that time has now come. / / Meet Nyango / / She is not what she seems – sure, she is a Western Lowland Gorilla, but she is of sub species Cross River – a very rare and special primate indeed, and in fact, the only one in captivity in the world [Yes, thats right folks – in the whole world]. The reason she is in captivity, was to save her life from the bushmeat trade. She has a life long injury to her right eye as a result of her experience while just a baby, but lives a happy and full life now, with a group of Westerns in sanctuary in Cameroon. Look closely at her good eye – you will see that she is looking directly at me – she loved to do this, which is unusal for a gorilla / / These gorillas are found on the border regions of Cameroon and Nigeria and are the rarest and most endangered of all the great apes, and indeed all primates. There are only about 250 of them left in the wild [and just this one in captivity] and they are threatened by many factors, including Ebola virus, poaching and the bush meat crisis. / / I hope you like this one – its a bit special /

Seen here laughing, this particular monk escaped Tibet into India 50 years ago with His Holiness, The Dali Lama. His trademark expression and enjoying tea and biscuit, the joke is enjoyed by all at the table.

Tiny baby cradled in his mother’s arm. “Orangutans are among our closest relatives in the animal kingdom. They share 97% of their genes with us, they are highly intelligent, thoughtful and inventive. They have a culture and aesthetic sense, and they resemble us in facial expression, gesture and many other ways. The red apes, which live only in Borneo and Sumatra, are far more “human” than human beings, and thus probably too good for this world. They are strong as oxen, but do not defend themselves against poachers or the loggers of the palm oil corporations – and are mercilessly slaughtered.” / The whole time I was in Singapore shooting the photos of Orangutans, the sky was white with smoke haze drifting across from Indonesia, where the little remaining rainforest supporting this critically endangered species is being utterly destroyed. Destroyed at such an inconceivable rate that Orangutans will be extinct in the wild by 2010. / Thank Goodness for men like Willie Smits.

My daughter Ashley after a very long night with her new baby girl / Proud daddy Dustin holds his daughter / Poor baby René I can imagine her thinking… this is not what I worked all night for lol / Home at last Time to relax and meet the family / Kolleen sits with momma and baby / Dustin is such a wonderful uncle. Playing with Kolleen and indulging her with the pink cowgirl hat = ) / Grandpa finally gets to hold the baby. He was sadly out of town when she was born so guess where we went straight from the airport lol. / Uncle Joey / Proud Aunt Amy, we think she is plotting how to run away with René lol. / Aunt Lyndzi / Kolleen in total contentment with her grandpa = ) / I think Rene has about had it with this flashy thing.
