Now that the official In Praise of Shadows competition is finally over I can actually enter. Had this in the wings for a while, but due to some complicated principles that now escape me, I couldn’t bring myself to submit. It’s a simple piece really, implying mankind’s ability to take almost everything they discover or invent and, eventually, turn it into something that will stunt, harm or negatively affect our future, ecologically, socially, and financially. That’s an Avro Vulcan bomber for those of you who care, which, had you been hanging around East Germany during the ‘60s, you’d have seen patrolling the skies 24 hours a day with their Blue Steel nuclear warheads. (Designed and tested in Woomera as it happens.) Here are some details of the morph, because you can’t actually see what’s going on. / / /

This was a capture with a Pentax *ist D with an 18-55mm lens set at 18mm. The exposure was 1/50th at f4.0 and an ISO of 3200. Post processing was minimal with Adobe Lightroom 1.0. I bumped up the contrast and clarity a bit and converted to black and white.
