Travelling through Arizona I noticed so much desolation, abandoned structures, disconnected souls… which prompted me to stop and listen, I’m fascinated with connecting sound to the visual medium. / How do you visually capture the sound / of desolation…this is my attempt…. The transparency of the girl shows a dissociativeness with the landscape. / Is she there only in spirit? Not only until one is heard completely do they connect totally with their environment.

Out of ashes, new beginnings, / Out of fire comes new power, / Out of darkness, new day dawning, / Phoenix help me in this trying hour. / DJ Conway Beginning with Apophysis to make the flames and adding a photo of a tree stump that resembled a ‘phoenix’ to me, adding the words and voila…my interpretation of a phoenix rising from the ashes… / My name, Tammy, means palm tree and in Greek the word for phoenix is the same as for palm tree. Legend says that when the phoenix reached a thousand years old, it flew to a special place and built a funeral nest of sweet smalling woods and resins in a tall palm tree, when the nest was set ablaze by the force of the Sun, the phoenix stayed in the nest and was destroyed. This standing being once rooted deep in the Earth / the rivers’ waters ran high, uprooted her for rebirth A magical aura surrounds her form, in remains / as she respectfully identifies our humble domain At her base sits the medicine and strength of the Bear / whose introspective instinct fares none to compare Great Horned Owl, the largest of all night birds / guarding with discernment and outsmarting the absurd Enduring Elk supports our stamina and health / reminding us our persistence and hope brings wealth Our four-legged teachers, like the wise old wolf / taught us new paths and options, as the old were engulfed Secretive Bobcat, in her stillness, does silently watch / honoring mindfulness, with no dogma to debauch The great Buffalo reminds us scarcity is based upon fear / to be released and make way for abundance is made quite clear Atop the embodiment of Spirit, as the Eagle does soar / the freedom of oneness and connecting without keeping score Owl in the Moon oversees winds of ever-present change / whilst the realm of our ancestors broaden their range Clawed, winged, finned and even those who crawl / are akin upon Earth, as I avow never to intentionally maul As one score has passed, opening this brethrens’ door / to these medicine creatures, I gratefully accept much more than folklore.
