Volcanic reflections in Laguna Verde in the Altiplano, a high altitude area in Bolivia bordering Chile. At 4000m above sea level the air is perfectly clear and the mountains still soar high above.
The Bolivian President was in the city of Potosi bearing gifts of tractors, computors and rock drills to try and boost his waning public opinion in the city. The inhabitants of Potosi turned out in force to voice thier disapointment with the way the cities miners and farmers are treated by the government
‘This is my land, Welcome to Bolivia’ – The magic of the Apltiplano of the Potosi region in Bolivia . Awesome volcanoes, magical mountains and very thin air up at 4000m. If you’ve travelled through the salar de Uyuni crossing from Bolivia to Chile you’ll have passed this sign, if you haven’t done this trip then put it on your to-do list, it’s astounding!
The vast empty landscape of the Altiplano, Potosi region, Bolivia . This 4wd ‘road’ is a reasonably well travelled route between Uyuni and San Pedro de Atacama in Chile . Toyota landcruisers ply this route full with travellers and their Bolivian momentos.

Salar de Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat. It is located in the Departmento of Potosi in southwest Bolivia, near the crest of the Andes, 3650 meters high. Some 40,000 years ago, the area was part of Lago Minchin, a giant prehistoric lake. When the lake dried, it left behind a major salt deserts. Salar de Uyuni is estimated to contain 10 billion tons of salt of which less than 25,000 tons is extracted annually. Every November, Salar de Uyuni is also the breeding grounds for three breeds of South American flamingos. In the wet season a bit of water covers the salt flats, althus causing a reflection in an already eerie and surreal landscape. The image shows two Toyota jeeps crossing the salt flats. Taken in March 2005.
