Nature’s little treasure trove, just as I found it – haven’t added a thing. Found this as the dawn light was fading and I was heading off. Camera: Canon 5D MarkII / Lens: 17-40 f 4.0L at 17mm / Speed 0.8 sec / Aperture f/22 / ISO 100 / Filter 3 stop soft ND grad / Post Processing: Lightroom – minimal exposure and saturation to accurately reflect what I saw.

When I was very young this cafe opened called the Coffee Pot. It didn’t stay in business too long, as I remember, but, as a child, I always thought it was just the coolest building, lol. It had a horseshoe counter with stools all around the circle. When it went out of business, it stood empty for many years. Most recently it had been the office for the James River Rafting and Canoe Company (I think that was the official name). On either side of the building they had racks of canoes where people would rent them to take off on their own, or opted for guided tour trips, which were also offered. I remember when the rafting company opened in the 70’s b/c I drove past this building every day on my way to work. “That won’t last long,” I thought. Good thing I didn’t make a bet because it prospered and stayed open until only a few years ago. We rode by it earlier this month and I had to stop and take a picture. On Rt 60, between Buena Vista and Lexington, VA, across the 4-lane road by Ben Salem Wayside (where everyone would stop for a picnic and swim in the summer), the Coffee Pot is still standing, 40+ years later. A favorite recipe of my wife & I. / Photo capture with a Canon Powershot A570 IS. Chicken & Dumplings / Chicken / 4 large, boneless chicken breast / cut into strips. / 4 cubes chicken bullion / 1 small onion, chopped / Parley, salt & pepper to taste Dumpling / 2 cups flour / 2 eggs / ½ up sour cream / ½ cup chicken broth / ½ cup cornstarch 1.Bring a large pot of salted water to boil. / Add chicken bullion, onion, parley, salt & pepper. / Cook for 45 minutes or until chicken is no longer pink. / Reduce heat to low and continue to simmer. 2.While chicken is cooking, combine in medium bowl flour, eggs, sour cream & broth. / Mix well and roll out dough on a floured surface. / Cut into squares and drop into boiling chicken mixture. / In a small bowl, mix together cornstarch and enough water to form a thin paste, stir into the pot. / Continue to simmer 5-10 minutes or until dumplings are light & fluffy.
